I don't think I've ever written a review before ive even made it home but this is warranted. I'm so glad I stopped here and will be coming back whenever im back in town. I saw a video on this place from IG and I knew I had to make it over. I came specifically for the birria tamales and I was not disappointed. Now don't be like me and walk over to the restaurant to order the tamales when you walk through the front door the tamales are on the left when you walk in next to the rotisserie chicken. I grabbed one foil pack which has 6 tamales for around 12$ I went back over to the restaurant area to order the consume. The consume took a few mins but came right out. It's filled with onions and cilantro. I think is the best consume ive had. My son and I cracked open on of the tamales while we were waiting and it was filled with beef! Ive always wanted to try authentic tamales because ive never had them before and Emilio's did not disappoint! Very moist flavorful tamales, I can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. This establishment has been around for atleast 25 years. Its part restaurant and part grocery store with seasoned taco and fajita meats. Today, I eat in the restaurant and everything I ordered was authentic Mexican style food. I even got the tamarind juice.. Great customer service, even tho I used pictures to make sure my food was ordered how I wanted. I'm allergic to radish so, I had to make sure it wasn't on anything. read more

We have been back here a number of times and the food is usually excellent and authentic. I don't like the tortas here but I like most of the tacos. I love these restaurant-store combos so I was excited when hubby wanted me to come here. They have all the normal options so I tried my usual. They also have a salsa bar so you can grab lots of different stuff. Much of it was too spicy even for me. I was excited to see pico with and without cactus. Their drinks are fantastic. I loved my horchata and it didn't have that chalky aftertaste that some places have. Their chicken has a special flavor to it that makes it delightful. I wasn't a big fan of the carnitas because I don't like the cueritos, which they usually add to the carnitas (even if you ask for it without them). This place is a grocery store but also a restaurant. The grocery is fine when you can find stuff you need and this and that. The restaurant part tho. The customer service is absolutely horrendous like every time I walk in there the lady at the front is either looking mad or looks like they just want to go home. I feel like if your not what they want they will either treat you lesser then you are or just get your order wrong. This has happened multiple times and even then I saw that same attitude problem towards other people. I work at a similar place and if we can't serve people with a smile we are given warnings until a suspension is necessary. That place is supposed to be somewhere where Latinos can enjoy food without having the need to make it at home and honestly if it wasn't for the food I would never go there. But the food is actually fire well most of it I've tried but the only little problem is when you ask for something not on it it either still comes on it or just bits of it. Now maybe this is a personal problem but I'm coming in to enjoy food and if there's a specific type of ingredient I don't want my experience will be less than it was. I should be able to feel happy for what I order and have it done right not slightly right and call it a day. It's a nice atmosphere sure and the people sometimes can be actually cool but I just can't get over the fact that ordering food makes you feel or even second guess what you'll want just because of the workers in the front always either having attitude when you try to order. That's what I mean you have to be what they want. If you order something a little too complicated they will either ignore it or make the experience of ordering even more miserable. I can see there's room for improvement but idk how people can seriously deal with people looking at you crazy for ordering what you'll like on your food. My friend recommended this place strongly. So I had to try it because he's suggested some good places before. I was glad to find the food is super authentic. I have been looking for a good authentic spot that is regularly good. This place is it! I love the tacos here but not the carnitas because they come with too many cueritos even if you ask not to have them. So I won't get that here. The tortas here are good but the chorizo torta wasn't the good idea I thought it would be. The chorizo tacos are much better. Just had a horrible experience at this establishment. Food inspectors should be called on them. I called my order in @12:12. Two tacos de asada and 3 sopes de pastor. Was told they were busy and it would be 20 mins. I went at 12:27. There was a line but I figured it wouldn't effect me since I called my order in. Paid and stepped to the side. People went and came. Yet my order was nowhere to be seen. My lunch break was running out. I figured I can eat in the car! . 1255 and nothing , so I get in line (4 guys are in line) . I reason that if make it ti the register and I don't see my order I would get a refund and make it somewhere else. This is where things get bad. I reach the register and ask for a refund expecting a fast transaction after I explain what has happened. Nope! They take my receipt and go into the kitchen. I wait for mins, so many that a line has formed again. This is crazy I thought. So I started to press a doorbell on the register over and over again and again. I can hear the staff get mad in the back! I had to annoy them as much as I was. This is where it gets even more bad! As I'm ringing the doorbell. A previous customer comes back because he got the wrong order (he left like 15+ mins earlier). It's my order. An employee apologizes and takes it to the back. He is upset too. The order he brought back was mine. So what do they do! Two mins later they act like my order magically got finished and send out a different employee to hand it to me!!!!! I said "No! That's the food he brought back ! I'm not going to take that!" Annoyed they take it to the back for the next sucker that orders that. That food should of been thrown away! Who knows what that guy did to it! Finally, defeated and annoyed they sent the manger who gives me a refund and apologized. Emilio's should be ashamed to try to resell take out food that was brought back to another customer! That has to be some kind of health/food violation! I will look into it. When I read about this place from my fellow yelper, Shaun, I decided to try this place out! Shaun did not led me astray! Although I didn't try what he had but my experience was just the same. It was one of the best tasting tacos I've had in a long time! Don't be afraid when you first walk into this grocery store. Steer ahead and walk to the window. The menu is obviously in Spanish. I ordered three (steak) beef tacos and one beef quesadilla. It's not ground beef of you are wondering. At first glance, the tacos seem small but (fanfare sounds)...it had plenty of flavor. What lacks in size, makes up in flavor! Squirt your lime on them, add a small amounts of hot salsa/verde salsa mixture and have at it! The first bite is just as good as the last bite! It had fresh cilantro, and white diced onion on flour tortilla. They run about $1.69 a piece The quesadilla was pretty good. My husband loves quesadillas! It had authentic queso fresco, same flavorful diced steak, shredded lettuce, tomato and cilantro on flour tortilla. It was about $5.00. You can't bet these adorable meals. Located in an unassuming strip mall, this charming shop doubles both as a Grocery as well as an awesomely authentic Mexican taqueria, so I am very glad that Kristina M suggested this as the 2nd stop on the UYE Tamale Tour she organized! The location has plenty of parking and it was hopping busy on the Saturday mid-morning when our group of 6 arrived. We couldn't find any spare tables to sit and eat, but the turnover is quick and by the time we paid for our food, there were some empty chairs available. Staff were super friendly and helped us despite being extremely busy! I split a chicken Tamale 6-pack with x2 others and my Tamale was delicious. Loved how fresh and creamy the corn covering was. The chicken was also well seasoned. There were some other things that I'd like to try as well on their menu and definitely plan to return. What slightly sucked tho is that I paid as much for my real fruit juice (aka no fake stuff) as the Tamale! How can you attempt to eat/ drink healthy when the good real stuff costs so much??? (Ok, rant over) I also did some shopping at the grocery- picked up some beautiful, ripe guavas and also Yelper Daniel C recommended the sugared dry fruit - I got fig and papaya - super delicious if a bit too sugary! I really wanted to pick up the freshly made chorizo from their butcher section but their version has both beef+pork so decided to give it a skip. I also spotted a lot of other great stuff in the grocery like dried sassafras & hibiscus flowers and then some stuff that I just wasn't totally sure about - it's always cool to encounter foodstuffs that you haven't eaten/ experimented with previously. I love Emilio's burritos tortoise, the restaurant is kept clean but you will need to call in your order because they stay busy

I'll start with the grocery store component. The place is super clean and modern looking. It's a small market but packed with with lots of things you just won't find many other places in the area. We came for plantain and oxtails. They also had short ribs and an assortment of other meats. Everything was fresh and reasonably priced and business was booming! I will 100% be back for the grocery store. Now the restaurant I will not buy from again which is a shame. I was the only one who stood at the cash register for several minutes and no one came out. I see a little button so I push it and still no one comes out. More people come in line now and a woman walks over to start helping. I place my order and take a seat to wait. Within 5 minutes everyone behind me was helped and I am still there waiting. After 15 minutes I finally get my food. Heads up - they have a salsa bar that includes like 8-10 yummy looking salsas plus guacamole, lime, and pickled onion/carrots/jalapeños, etc. When you dine in you are free to eat those but when you take out you can only get a predetermined green and red salsa or you have to pay extra. Seems a bit silly to me but okay. I ordered a horchata (large was $2.33 so great price and it was yummy!) and an al pastor torta ($6.99). Unfortunately there was hardly any meat on my torta at all. Not even one serving spoon full so I was very disappointed. Maybe they had run out? I will say that the bread was fresh and soft but I couldn't even taste the meat and am including pics too show how little meat there was. For these reasons I won't return to eat. read more

As soon as I walked into Emilio's, I was sold. It's a small grocery store that carries Hispanic staples and has a hot food counter in the back. The menu is fairly basic - tacos, tortas, quesadillas, burritos. They've got daily lunch specials, and I was barely able to stop myself from ordering the 12 tacos for $10. I decided to go with two tacos - one chicken and one asada. Normally, when you order a taco at a taqueria, there's some kind of meat topped with shredded cilantro and diced white onion on a corn tortilla. Simple, but good. Emilio's tacos, though, were like regular tacos that had levelled up. The chicken taco had huge chunks of spicy marinated chicken (I think it was in a tomatillo-based sauce). The asada had tender slices of beef that had been cooked with bell peppers. The tortillas were small, but they were thick and sturdy. I picked up a canned iced tea from the cooler (they also have a ton of Mexican and American sodas), and my total bill came out to $4.50. As a bonus, they sell their prepared meats by the pound, there are tables if you want to eat in the store, and the staff is small, but very friendly. read more

Having moved here from Southern California, I have been hard-pressed to find Mexican good that comes close to the quality and taste of back home. However, last week I was working at an apartment complex and the leasing staff was eating what appeared to be legit Mexican food. I asked what the location was and made sure to visit this place asap. Upon arrival, I was a little surprised it was a grocery store, but I made my way to the vending window and ordered a carne asada burrito. While I waited, I noticed they have weekly specials which makes it more of a draw for me to come back. I got the burrito and was very pleased with what I saw. Upon taking the first bite, I legitimately felt like I was eating at a Mexican food establishment back home. The carne asada actually had taste to it and all the proper ingredients were there. Ok I'm from California and know what true authentic Mexican food tastes like. It kills me to know a lot of places out here call themselves authentic when they are nothing of the sort. This location is by far the BEST and close to authentic Mexican food you can get. Everything here is freshly made. I've been to many restaurants where they serve you so called "fresh" salsa that looks like liquid tomato paste with no flavor and I know it's from a can; it sure taste like it too. This place makes all the salsas fresh and makes them right! They all have great flavors. I tasted all of the different ones they had. From pico to hot and they are made correctly. As well as the guacamole. I've been disappointed by many restaurants out here that don't know how to make it. My wife makes it better than most out here. This place makes the guacamole fresh with the correct flavors. I was very impressed. I tried the asada quesadilla and it tasted amazing. It had enough cheese and meat. I was surprised that it had lettuce and tomato slices in it, normally it doesn't, but the flavors from the asada null the veggies out. I also tried an asada and chicharon taco. Both were excellent and have a good portion of meat on them. What also made the quesadilla and tacos better was the homemade tortillas. This place makes them and I can taste it. All other places make their stuff with store bought and these are the best! I've boughten asada from the grocery side before and it was great. Tastes like back home. I was completely impressed by all the food here. At least all that I tried. I can definitely say that it is worth the drive for anyone to come and give it try. Fellow yelper Rob turned me onto Emilio's tamales and I couldn't thank him enough as these truly are some of the best tamales I've ever had. I have a weakness for food wrapped in leaves. In fact, wrapping food in leaves and cooking it over a heat source was one of the greatest ancient inventions, right up there with the wheel and the compass. Archeological evidence indicates at one point or another, culinary pioneers in different parts of the world finally had enough of food falling apart or being burnt by the open flame, or losing moisture and flavor during cooking, and turned to whatever leaves readily available to them for the rescue--stuffed grape leaves in the Middle East, zongzi in China, and tamales in Maya, etc. Where was I? Oh, Emilio's makes two kinds of tamales: pork and chicken, and each sold in a triple-wrapped (corn husk, then plastic wrap, finally tin foil) six-pack ($5.99). You will find them on a warmer along with some whole roasted chickens, directly facing the entrance. The pork filling (cooked in red sauce) is spicier than the chicken filling (cooked in green sauce). I love both kinds, though the chicken tamales might taste a little healthier, ha! The meat to masa ratio is great--actually there might be more meat than masa in their tamales, just ridiculous. They are made fresh daily. I once went around 5PM and they were sold out, so the best time to snatch these babies is lunch time. As the name indicates, Emilio's is a grocery and a compact one that is. They don't have a printed menu and seating is limited. Besides tamales, they offer tacos (around 6-8 kinds?), tortas, gorditas and quesadillas, all of which are prepared to order in a semi-open kitchen (you order at the window), but I have yet to try anything other than the tamales. read more

I am going to come back and add more to this review, but I wanted to get on the record as informing the world that the tamales, especially the pork tamales are as good as they get at Emillio's. They make them fresh around lunch time every day, and when they're gone...they're gone. Go early for lunch and buy a dozen and take the rest home for dinner; they are NOT sold individually. I am not sure they are even on the menu, but they have them. What makes these so good is that usually tamales have too much corn meal, or the filling is dry, or the entire thing is too bland to eat on its own without a myriad of hot sauces. These tamales however are perfectly proportioned, cooked in a corn husk, then wrapped in cellophane to lock in the moisture. PERFECT tamales.....I've never had better. read more

I think I found my new favorite place for tacos. You step to the back counter to order, receive a ticket, and pay at the grocery register right behind you. The seating is self service, but they'll bring the food out to you. There's red and green salsa on the table, and both are above average. We went on a Saturday and they didn't have several of the items on the overhead menu. They had all of the meat choices, but only tacos were available. Good thing they're amazing. We had barbacoa, carne asada, and al pastor. I'll have to say the al pastor may be the best I've ever had, anywhere. It's cooked perfectly with nice chucks of fresh pineapple. The tacos themselves are very good, but what made this trip standout was the nopal cactus salad. Their version is almost like civiche with cactus instead of fish. It comes with a little chunk of cotija cheese. The salad is in the little refrigerator in front of where you order your food. We also had Jamaica Aqua Fresca from the bubbler behind the register. Good. They also had horchata. As stated in other reviews, Emilio's offers a wide variety of Mexican groceries, including an extensive meat case with sausages and seasoned meats. We were also able to find products here that we've never found in Memphis, like dried mango with chili and multiple tamarind products. Those alone will keep us returning. read more

Went for lunch today. 3 chicken tacos for $4 includes drink, good price. Tacos were very small, smaller than those on Hispanic food trucks outside some markets around town. At least 1 had potatoes in it? Granted, larger individual pieces of chicken vs the food trucks, but potatoes on a taco? Flavor was good, had some salsa on the side and on the tacos. Howdy food brats out there....BIG SHOUT OUT TO A WINNER! So being that I moved back here from Houston TX, over two years ago, finding quality Mexican or Latin food is daunting. I am afraid to even go to anyone recommendations since I got here. I thought it was awesome that the company included me on their holiday festivities. I am working on a project at the CCHS Admin office and we had a lovely Christmas pot luck Friday. CCHS ordered the meat and sides from this place. WOWSY! it was so amazing...chicken, fajita beef and grilled chicken, pork, and chorizo, beans, rice. The pork with rinds in it....darn good stuff man! I tried some of all the meats....fresh, excellent flavor, great texture, tender, and the spicy was just right! The smell, was like being at my best friends Mexican family party at New Years Eve...grandma's cooking baby! For catering...everything was perfect...generous portions, great authentic flavors, fresh, and hot! LOVED IT! WHY aren't enough people writing about this place??? Absolutely some of the BEST, authentic Mexican food in the city! I think their Carne Asada is the BEST I've had in Memphis, hands-down. Better than any taco truck I've tried in the city, for sure. The torta is huge, and only $6.99. It can feed two people easily. There is a whole salsa bar which is great (they used to only have 2 types of salsa). They've recently expanded their space so it's no longer just a "window" where you place an order then leave. You can order from the counter, and have a seat in the expanded space and actually enjoy your food! It's great. Very clean, bilingual staff, very FAST service also. Had lunch here last week and it was fantastic! For those looking for AUTHENTIC Latin cuisine, this is the place. There are lots of options to build your own tacos. I had one steak, one shrimp, and one fish taco. The steak was my favorite by far. The others were good but the steak was off the charts good. There were quite a few other options on the menu and I think I'll try them all at some point. Looking forward to trying the beef tongue... My partner had a grande burrito with chorizo and it was superb as well. They also have a fresh salsa bar that includes roasted jalapeños. Can't say enough good things. We visited Emilio's looking for Sazon Goya seasoning for a Columbian dish I'm preparing. We found it 1st thing upon walking in the store, then we decided to look around and see all they had to offer. What a great store! It was close to lunch so we decided to stay for lunch. We bought the 10 carne tacos for $12...Wow, it was great...we really enjoyed them. We will be back. I briefly lived in Olive Branch MS where I found a place called Emilios that had steak burritos as big around as my thigh and filled with the best steak and veggies I'd ever had. Best burritos I'd ever had hands-down. When I moved back to Memphis I still made 40 minute drives to get their burritos until one day it was gone. Part of my soul died that day. I tried over 50 places in Memphis looking for an alternative for around a decade. La Guadalupana was really good, Moes was great, and a couple of taco trucks were real good too, but none ever replaced Emilios. Well after searching online recently I found out about Emilio's Grocery, went there, and asked if they were the same place from Olive branch. They said yes it was the same business, and so I got the grande burrito. FINALLY IT HAPPENED! Not near as huge as the old location and a dollar fifty more than it was 10 years ago there, but it was that taste of authentic fresh perfectly seasoned perfection wrapped in an amazing tortilla that I remembered and craved for so long. Never going anywhere for tamales ever again. The smell alone drove me to open these piping hot suckers. Again, they were smoldering and yet I happily took those second degree burns to the throat and quickly inhaled one. Best I've ever had. If I weren't saving hem for dinner I'd eat all six right now. My boyfriend is Mexican and his family and friends are always having parties with authentic Mexican food (as authentic as you can be when you're not physically in Mexico). So I've tried several dozen tamales along with the ones around Memphis and none have come close to these. They're moist (so moist they're sweating with that beautiful orangey liquid inside the husk), bursting with flavor - filling AND corn outside layer, and the meat to corn ratio is PERFECT! I eat tamales at least once a week and will probably increase that frequency now that I've found these and I live 20 min away from here. I WILL make that drive! They also serve tacos, fresh meat and other Mexican delicacies I also will be trying when I go back. Do your food soul a favor and give these people your money!!! read more

My favorite place in Memphis for a barbacoa, chicharones, or chicken burrito/taco. This is a small grocery store, with a lunch counter inside. For a helpful tip, they also sell their cooked meats by the pound, to-go, so one can have a nice meal at home. Order, grab a drink, sit at one of the tables at the front of the store, and wait for your great meal. Love this place. read more
