Title: Frustrating Phone Call Experience with Unaccommodating Doctor
Review:
I recently had an incredibly frustrating experience while attempting to arrange an appointment with Dr. Shafic over the phone, and I feel compelled to share my disappointment through this review. As a deaf individual, I rely on American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters to effectively communicate, and unfortunately, Dr. Shafic's response during our conversation showcased a complete lack of understanding and consideration for individuals with disabilities.
During the phone call to schedule an appointment, I made it clear that I would require an ASL interpreter for effective communication during the visit. However, to my dismay, Dr. Shafic not only expressed an inability to provide an interpreter but also went as far as suggesting that I should refrain from coming in for the appointment because he lacked the knowledge to interact with a deaf patient.
I found this response deeply disheartening, as it revealed Dr. Shafic's ignorance regarding his obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It is important to note that the ADA explicitly states that healthcare providers must offer auxiliary aids and services, including ASL interpreters, to ensure effective communication for individuals with hearing impairments. It is not the responsibility of the patient to shoulder the financial burden of hiring an interpreter, as Dr. Shafic seemed to imply.
Encountering such a lack of accessibility and empathy within the medical profession creates significant barriers for individuals with hearing impairments who are seeking proper healthcare. Due to Dr. Shafic's insensitivity and refusal to provide a basic accommodation, I was unable to convey my concerns and provide essential information regarding my medical history. This compromised not only the overall healthcare experience but also potentially jeopardized my daughter's well-being.
I strongly caution individuals with hearing impairments against seeking medical care from Dr. Shafic or this particular medical facility. Their dismissive attitude towards the rights of individuals with disabilities and their failure to comply with ADA guidelines are wholly unacceptable.
In conclusion, my phone call experience with him was extremely disappointing. The lack of consideration, refusal to provide an ASL interpreter, and expectation that I should bear the financial burden of obtaining one all amount to clear violations of the ADA. This behavior demonstrates a concerning disregard for patients with disabilities. I sincerely hope that my review serves as a wake-up call, prompting Dr. Shafic and the medical facility to rectify their practices, foster inclusivity, and prioritize the needs of all patients, regardless of their hearing abilities. read more
