Eloise Rescue seems like a kind, empathetic rescue on the surface, until you actually look into the adoption process. In addition to the $700 adoption fee, every dog requires 7-15(!) training classes, which range anywhere from $350-$550. This is non-negotiable. And can you guess which trainer you are required to use? It's ever so coincidentally the owner-and-also-pet-trainer, Vickie! Not saying this is a scam, but feel free to reach your own conclusions. Perhaps a dog needs additional training- it's entirely possible- but the fact that it's only allowed to be administered by the person who also owns the company.. that's a bit suspect. If your heart ever breaks from a post from Eloise Rescue's social media, featuring an adorable animal that just wants a forever home, just know that it's quite possible that Vickie herself is the person holding that dog back from having a better life. read more

I'm writing this as someone who was introduced to Vickie through our trusted vet, and worked with her in a personal one-on-one training setting for my beloved dog. I have zero to gain from this review, I just felt compelled to offer some clarity, after stumbling upon a few Yelp reviews that mischaracterize both Vickie and the mission of Eloise Rescue. It's easy to make assumptions without knowing the full picture--but I can say with confidence that this rescue is run with the utmost heart, integrity, and care. Yes, Eloise Rescue charges a $700 adoption fee, and yes, you can adopt a dog at a shelter for $50 with a free vet visit. But that lower price does not equate to greater altruism. At a shelter, you often don't know whether a dog is good with children, other animals, or how they'll behave in a home environment. Nor is the true health status of the dog always known, and the quality of the free vet care may vary significantly. With Eloise Rescue, every dog is temperament-tested before adoption to ensure they are safe and a good fit for their future family--whether that family includes kids, pets, or seniors. No dog is adopted out in under two weeks. That time is used to observe the dog, treat any medical or behavioral issues, and prepare them for success in their new home. Each dog receives a full blood panel, vaccinations, spay or neuter if needed, preventative treatments (for issues like giardia and kennel cough which many dogs leave the shelter with), and a full grooming. The rescue doesn't rely on donated food, either. Instead, food is purchased based on each dog's individual health needs prescribed by experts in veterinary medicine and holistic animal nutrition. When dogs are placed in foster care, everything is provided--from toys and treats to crates, belly bands, bowls, and more. The only thing asked of fosters is their time and love. Yes, adopters are also required to attend 7 group training classes--not as a money-making endeavor, but because Vickie wants to ensure dogs and families are set up to thrive. As a highly sought-after private trainer, Vickie could easily focus on more lucrative one-on-one sessions. Instead, she chooses to offer these group classes to her rescue families so she can stay connected during the critical first weeks, help troubleshoot any early challenges, and make sure both the dog and adopter are adjusting well. It's about long-term success, not short-term profit. In talking with Vickie, I learned that since founding Eloise Rescue nearly 40 years ago, only 13 dogs have ever been returned. That's nearly unheard of when it comes to other rescues and shelters. And Vickie remains in touch with 90% of her adopters for the life of the dog--a testament to her unwavering commitment and the relationships she builds. Vickie's dedication to animal welfare is truly extraordinary. Every decision she makes is rooted in compassion and a deep sense of responsibility. She pours her heart into Eloise Rescue--never for recognition or praise, but because she truly believes every dog deserves a loving, safe home. Vickie goes above and beyond, often taking in dogs others have turned away, paying out of pocket for care, and providing each animal with dignity and individualized attention. I share all of this, purely because I believe Vickie is one of the most genuine, honest, and kind-hearted people I have ever met, and that any dog who is fortunate enough to be rescued by or gets to train with Vickie has won the dog-life-lottery. If a negative review exists, I can only assume it stems from a misunderstanding--or perhaps disappointment from someone who did not meet the thoughtful, high standards set for adoption. The only misfortune here is that Eloise Rescue doesn't receive more charitable support and the visibility it deserves, because if it did, Vickie would have the ability expand her altruistic work with Eloise Rescue even further. read more

My partner and I are so grateful for Eloise Rescue as it brought us our beloved Australian Shepherd, Luna. Vickie, the owner of Eloise Rescue, is passionate about the welfare of the dogs and ensuring that each of them finds a caring and loving home. The process of adoption was thorough and Vickie took the time to explain the history and personality of the adoptee. She is knowledgeable and insightful. Luna is thrilled every chance she gets to see Vickie, who lives in our neighborhood. Luna is as thankful for Eloise Rescue as we are. We highly recommend Eloise Rescue. read more

I received a follow-up from Vickie just one day after submitting an application for an adorable husky puppy. After reviewing my responses, she felt I might be more suited for one of her other husky pups (litter mate). My boyfriend and I set up some time to meet "Sookie" a few days afterwards and immediately fell in love. We took her home the same day and it has been one of the best decisions we've ever made! Vickie is very well aware of the needs of each of her rescues and takes the time to carefully vet each application, then match them with the perfect furbaby. She truly cares for each of her rescues and wants the home they go to, to be their forever home. Honestly, I've read some of the negative reviews and it would do you well to ignore them. There is nothing more important to Vickie than making sure these furbabies find their perfect home. (If you want a husky puppy, but live in a tiny apartment and work 100 hours per week, it's probably not a good fit.) She's exceptionally kind, reasonable, and responsive. I've lived with or owned dogs for pretty much my entire life, yet have still been able to learn so much from Vickie, especially during training. Eloise is a wonderful rescue and I am SO grateful that Kaia is part of our family. I don't (nor do I want to) remember what it was like without her. read more

Eloise Rescue - Pet Adoption Near Me

We adopted our dog, Scout, from Eloise pet rescue and are so grateful for the care she was given, by Vickie, before she came into our lives. Vickie clearly loves these dogs and has dedicated her life to helping them find loving homes. She is a one woman show and if you have a hard time reaching her, I would recommend calling her, as she always gets back. I will say that the process is not the easiest way to get a dog, however, we were given so much information about Scout's health and personality before we adopted her, that made life so much easier once we got her. I especially appreciate Vickie's willingness to help, even after we received our dog. The adoption fees cover vet visits, blood work, microchipping, spay/neuter costs, plus the dogs are cared for with a dedicated foster family before you receive them. read more

Try Sunny Oasis Rescue - kind, extremely experienced, welcoming, and just as concerned about fur babies. The fact that in a preliminary 5 minute conversation the person answering the phone demeans every other person in her industry as a hack is a Giant red flag. Dogs that have been abandoned have it hard enough - with rescues like this its no wonder people are just going out and buying pets. It's not worth dealing with this personality. read more

I adopted my pup through Eloise Rescue about 2 months ago. Because the dog had been fostered, Vickie and her team knew everything about her personality before I adopted her and were aware of her quirks and love-able antics. This really helped lower my anxiety and enjoy my first experience adopting a pet. Finding the right match for the dogs is of utmost importance to Vickie and in my case, she found the perfect match. read more

My wife and I love Eloise Rescue/Vickie. First time rescuing a pup, and it was the best experience for us. We originally wanted to rescue a young adult, but she thought we'd be perfect candidates for a puppy that she had just rescued. She was right! One of the best experiences. We'd do it again! Vickie is a pleasure to work with and truly loves her fur babies. It's been almost 8 years since we rescued our little girl, and the beautiful part is that we still are in contact with her. We send her photos often, and we know she appreciates it. Thank you, Vickie, for everything! Chevelle loves you too! read more

I haven't even visited but Vicky definitely reeled me in! I called around a few pet adoption places and she was literally the only one who picked up. I asked her a few questions to see if we were allowed to come in to physically check out and she gave me some suggestions as to where to visit because my friend and I were in the area and wanted to look around. She mentioned there weren't too many shelters in Beverly Hills but was incredibly nice about everything! Although there are only a few reviews, there's a reason why they have 5 stars! She's an incredibly sweet person and we did the whole conversation over the phone so we didn't waste our time driving there! She saved us a trip, but Eloise Rescue is at the top of my list whenever I'm ready to adopt a dog. Thank you for being so incredibly sweet! :) read more

Vickie Wagner of Eloise dog Rescue is one of the most compassionate and determined people I know. I witnessed her single handedly, and with great risk to her health and safety, rescue a frightened dog trapped in an L.A Wash just hours before a major storm was predicted. I applied for a dog I saw on Petfinder that was at Eloise Rescue. I spent quite a bit of time going through the application, and after I submitted it, I was rejected within a few minutes with no clear explanation other than I was not a good fit. I tried asking for clarification but didn't hear anything afterwards. This was a dog that I thought would be a wonderful fit, so that kind of *abrupt* rejection about a pet that I thought I could take care of really well made me cry. I would not try getting a dog from this rescue again. I know it's important to find the right person/fit for a dog that's being adopted, but as another reviewer pointed out, they seem really judgmental without even having met the person who applied. read more

Eloise Rescue is the gold standard for rescues. I adopted my dog from Vickie (who runs the rescue) when she was a puppy. I never had a dog before and Vickie held my hand through everything from food, to crates, to vets, to leashes, to training - she went above and beyond to help me with everything. Years later and she is still there for me (and Samantha, my dog) for any questions I have. Her love for animals is incredible. She truly does God's work. It's really difficult to work with a rescuer that is high pressure and, honestly, just rude. My family member is looking for a new addition to her family and reached out to Vickie, the rescue owner. Right off the bat, my family member was feeling uncomfortable by the way the owner, Vickie, was speaking to her. She came off as pushy, harsh, and unpleasant overall. When she learned that Vickie requires that all adopters go through HER OWN 7 week training program, she decided to move on to look at other dogs as she felt very uncomfortable at the idea of spending 7 weeks in training with this person. It just wasn't a good fit. She let Vickie know and Vickie responded extremely unprofessionally (I have screenshots). She said extremely sarcastic things in text messages, continually berating my family member. Eventually, we made the choice to block her as she kept sending message after message. My family member is a wonderful person and has the space and finances to provide beautifully for this dog. It's really unfortunate that the owner turned off this potential adopter and has turned off others as well (as can be seen in additional reviews.) read more

This is our little Lilly. The most precious, little puppy on the planet. Lilly came to Eloise Rescue through the heart & love of it's president, Vickie Wagner. She found her (at not even 3 mos. old!!!) in a high kill shelter having medical issues that were unimaginable. This poor little baby had been terribly abused and would have died had it not been for Vickie's tenacity and vigilant "never say die" attitude. After almost $6,000 worth of medical procedures, Lilly is now living with us, her forever parents who are simply amazed everyday, at how loving, playful, trusting and smart this little peanut is. While Vickie doesn't have a vet. license....she should! She knows more about diet & training than most vets learn by the time they graduate & knows the signs to look for in matching and placing her "saves"! My husband and I were asked to come for an initial visit to see how we'd get along with Lilly. That was followed by a "take some time to consider what you're signing on for!" Of course, we didn't have to think twice & the next step was to have a home inspection. Vickie is very thorough & particular where she places her little babies. Kudos to people like Vickie & Eloise Rescue who save, defend & turn these sweet "throw-aways" into loving, well-behaved adoptable pets. On behalf of us animal lovers out there....thank you, a thousand times over for saving and matching little Lilly with us! We're simply in love! read more

Vickie Wagner and Eloise Rescue are experts at not only saving animals but matching them with their forever homes. My husband has had dogs before but Major is my first. Vickie not only knew Major would be just right for me and I for him, but has also been a wonderful mentor along the way. We received excellent recommendations for training with K9 Coach and the best vet of all time, Dr. Werber at Century Veterinary Group. Vickie has helped me navigate being a first time doggy mommy and we couldn't be more grateful not only for what she has done for Major and us but for all the wonderful work she has done to save so many babies and find their forever homes. She is talented and passionate and we couldn't be more proud to have adopted from such an amazing rescue. We even decided that Major should have a playmate and that we had room in our hearts and home for one more. Again, Vickie paired us with another "best dog ever", Malibu. He's so wonderful and everything we could have ever hoped for! She continues to support us as a family and we absolutely adore her! Thank you Eloise Rescue read more

Wow! I'm so confused. Vickie literally ghosted me. After submitting application, a half dozen emails, a dozen texts, calls, virtual walk-through and then finally get to meet what we thought was going to be our new dog, she was nice enough to our face but couldn't even bother to call us to say she was going to another family. She told us we were the only family, that she was holding on to her for us and then we arrive only to find another rescue there that she was trying to sell us on. She then brought out one of her other dogs, who kept barking at our son. Good luck trying to have the dog pay attention to us when Vickie's got a pouch of food on her belt and the foster woman sitting there in the room. It was a total mess. She was insisting on a choke collar, 8 sessions with her trainer (that you pay VICKIE in advance for) and you don't even get your name on the chip. It only has her and the rescue's info. That said, we weren't adopting Vickie, we were adopting a new pet. So we took it all with a grain of salt. After texts and calls to say we wanted the pup... nothing. Three days after meeting her and one more text asking if she was alright, we were told she decided it wasn't a good fit and some bizarre excuse about why. read more

I love Eloise Rescue! Vickie is amazing and truly loves the animals! I had the pleasure of fostering for her rescue and can vouch that Vickie treats each dog as if it were her own. Many rescues are just happy to find any home for the dogs...to make a quick buck and move on to the next. But not Eloise Rescue...she will go through hundreds of applications and home checks, before choosing the right fit. Vickie is never rushed with the dogs, and takes her time to find the perfect family. She even provides her fosters with the highest level of food and supplies. I have learned so much from Vickie and highly recommend anyone trying to adopt from her. read more

My family adopted, Hope one year ago this month. She is beyond the pale of a wonderful dog and we love her with all of our hearts. Eloise Rescue is awesome!! They found our little poodle/bichon tied to a building and rescued her.....had her checked out by a vet who gave her shots, had her spayed, and a chip inserted so we would never lose her, she was groomed (her hair was 5 inches long!) and all the Eloise animal lovers took care of her beautifully and lovingly until they found the perfect home for her. Us!! Vickie checked our home for safety, and has given us guidance in everything....including the best food to keep our darling healthy. I stumbled across Eloise Rescue on Facebook. I was intrigued enough to "like" it and watched the updates. I could see from the updates that dogs were being pulled in their 11th hour, taken to the vet and after a clean bill of health and neutering (if needed) were available for adoption. One little boy really got to me. I watched every day to see if someone adopted him. I couldn't understand why no one was adopting this amazing dog. I finally contacted Vickie about adoption. I brought my two dogs so we could see how they all got along. Needless to say it wasn't a perfect match. Mine sat there like they wished they could leave. Vickie was a little concerned about the meeting...not only for her dog, but the impact a new puppy would have on my two. I encouraged her to bring the pup to my house where everyone could run around in the backyard and she could do a home check. Once together and off leashes they ran around and were fine. Toby has been with us now since October, and a great addition to the family. He is healthy and his two "sisters" love him to death. Vickie isn't just in this to flip dogs. She saves them, vets them and makes sure they are going to the right home. If anyone in the LA/OC area is looking for a great dog this is definitely the first place you should look. Not only are you saving a life, but you know you'll have a great dog. read more

We adopted Ethan from Vickie. What an amazing person! She is kind, compassionate and loves the animals dearly. She not only takes amazing care of these animals, she makes herself available should you have questions or concerns 24/7. She has gone above and beyond and been with me through one of my most difficult times, when I lost Ethan's brother, Guinness, a 15 year-old lab rescue, despite the fact that she had nothing to do with Guinness' rescue. When I came across Eloise Rescue, I was particularly enamored with a photo of a little black puppy, "Emily". I contacted them, filled out the paperwork, which I was very impressed by. It was a lengthy questionnaire, asking all the right questions. I appreciate the lengths to which a rescue will go, to make sure the adopter is an appropriate fit. When I finally met Vickie and dear sweet "Emily", we spent time together, making sure Emily approved of me. That was almost two years ago and I couldn't be any happier with Emily. She was everything and more that Vickie represented. Vickie is passionate and knowledgeable about dogs and the work she does. I support Eloise Rescue as best I can, on a monthly basis. I had the best experience with Eloise Rescue and couldn't recommend them highly enough. As I sit her writing this, I'm cuddled by the newest member of our family, and it's all because of Vicky and her team. Our family had been looking to add to our canine family for awhile but nothing seemed to work out. Then one day I saw a listing for one of Eloise's adoptable dogs and It was love at first sight. The process that followed with Vicky was the best. She wanted to find the right family for the right dog. She did a house check right away, was honest about her process, and it was clear that she put in the time to make sure the fit would be a good one forever. She interviewed my daughter (5), which I thought was great. The other thing that's great about Eloise is that they leave you with a list of resources: vet recommendations, dog walkers, dog sitters, food recommendations, trainer recommendations etc. We feel so very lucky and grateful that Vicky rescued our newest family member.
