Second trip to London we took the London underground from Heathrow to Holborn all along the Piccadilly line without transferring. 23 stops along the line but we we were seated the entire time carrying day packs and one carry-on luggage each.. The cost was the equivalent of $7 per person. If you are coming from Heathrow airport during rush hour you can take the Heathrow Express directly from the airport too Paddington station. For two people this would be about the same Fare as Uber. And you would still have to get from Paddington station to your central London hotel. In our case we could have taken the Elizabeth Express from Heathrow airport to Tottenham Court road station and walked the mile to our hotel near Holborn underground station. The fair would have been about double that of the London underground. Both of the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line are more luggage friendly. Compared to the London underground. The London underground has contactless payment. You simply scan your credit card on entry and scan the same credit card on exit. Seats seats are cloth with armrest. People with oversized luggage can put your luggage near the doors in special areas. is not advised during peak hours was standing room only. Unlike New York City most London stations have working escalators making it possible, but not easy, to carry luggage on the trains. Make sure you put your luggage on its side. One person put his luggage on his wheels in the luggage area but the luggage rolled out the entrance on its own at the next stop.

London Underground is certainly cheaper than a taxi or uber, and we had no problems finding room on the trains with our luggage (two people, each with a carry on). Announcements remind you to "mind the gap", and the stations we visited were staffed and welcoming. One even had an inspirational quote up. As expected, some stations are more modern than others since they are utilized more. I loved that I could tap my credit card to get through the gates onto the train, rather than buying a physical card or downloading an app. I wish the DC Metro used this system.

Cutty Sark (aka Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich) is the closest station for accessing the…read moreNational Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory. It is on the DLR system between Island Gardens and Greenwich in Travelcard zone 2/3 (you get charged for the cheaper journey). This is a deep station, with at least two escalators. There might have been a third I missed. Like most of the DLR, this station is step free. There is a lift ("elevator" to Americans). There are also a pair of cashpoints ("ATM's") in the station near the ticket machine. Note that there are no ticket barricades at Cutty Sark. You have to remember to purchase a ticket or swipe your Oyster card. I have seen ticket inspectors on board the trains!

It dissects the city in an almost north, south direction, running from Hampstead Heath to Pimlico. I love this bus because it is regular, quick and doesn't fill up with the late night fools that have had one to many WKD Blues. Bermondsey (I'm not going to try to tell you how it's pronounced) is one of the few stations south…read moreof the Thames. It's on the Jubilee Line, between London Bridge and Canada Water. It is in Travelcard Zone 2. Because it was only opened in 1999, it is a modern station and has step-free access from the street to the platform level. Like other Jubilee stations, it has the platform edge doors. It's a surprisingly airy and modern station, with high ceilings and quite a bit of natural light even down on the platforms.

There were no problems at all, we had to wait at times to get through the barriers as children under 10 were free they had no tickets to get in or out themselves. Not many people pushed or got in our way, we stood to the side to let people over take us when it was appropriate and those in a rush did just that. They also enjoyed the buskers at the various stations, and got used to it by the end of the first day. I think it helped we were in Paris and used their underground trains 2 weeks before as when at home we rarely if ever use public transport!

I don't live in London, but work often, so the day travel passes are the easiest and cheapest way if you haven't got an Oyster card. In busy time certain lines are almost unbearably busy, and you will have to literally squash yourself onto a train at times. Despite this, the tube is still cleaner and runs more reliably than its equivalent in other European cities such as Paris! Not ideal, but not too bad either.

Borough is one of the handful of stations south of the Thames, on the Northern Line between Elephant & Castle and London Bridge in Travelcard Zone 1. Like some deep stations, Borough does not have stairs for reaching street level, instead has lifts ("elevators" in American). I would suspect that they get just as crowded as the Tube does on busy days. It's called deodorant, people. Try it sometime. Other than that, a nice enough station.

We were group of four with large size luggage. Both quotes & bookings are done via email. Once you receive a quote and are ready to pay there are several payment options offered. I used PayPal. Both pickups were easy. On day of pickup at LHR I got a text alert from Blackberry & the driver regarding where the car was and estimated arrival time. The driver met us at the suggested meeting place at LHR on time. Ditto Southampton cruise terminal pickup with a drop off at our London hotel. I'd booked with Blackberry if I'm ever in London again.
