The station opened in 1840 on the Northern and Eastern Railway Company's line from Stratford to Broxbourne, slightly to the north of the present location. Originally incorporated in 1836 to build a line from London to Cambridge, and thence to York via Lincoln, by 1843 the company had only reached Bishop's Stortford and they were taken over by the Eastern Counties Railway. The station was moved to the present site in 1885. The station was rebuilt in the 1970s and now consists of a rather grim utilitarian brick building on the west (Hertford) platform, with small shelters on both platforms. The station has a self-service ticket machine for use when the ticket office is closed. There is a small cycle rack, a taxi office adjacent to the station, and buses between Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey stop on the bridge above the station. There is level access to the down (Hertford direction) platform only. The service is provided by National Express East Anglia, providing a basic half-hourly service off-peak from Hertford East to Liverpool Street station Mondays to Saturdays, and hourly on Sunday. Peak hour services Monday to Saturday are roughly every 15 minutes.

This is a very small station although one which is very very heavily used by daily commuters. There are actually four platforms at the station although only two are in use, one for travel into London, the other for travel towards the coast. The platforms are accessed via a long staircase making the station very awkward for those with mobility problems, buggies or heavy luggage. Platform facilities are limited. There is a waiting room (which is appalling) and a couple of benches on either platform. Most of the length of the platform is exposed to the elements making this a particularly unpleasant station to wait at during the rush hour. The ticket office is often under-staffed and as a result there will be long queues, particularly on a Monday morning. Self-service ticket machines are available and the station now benefits from ticket gates (fare evasion used to be a real issue here). There is a very small newsagents at the station and a cab office next door. There is very limited parking at the station which almsot equates to no parking. There's a tiny carpark behind the station which is for car park season ticket holders only. There can be no more than about 30 spaces and there is a very long waiting list for a space. Street parking is all controlled and so not possible for the commuter. You'll therefore need to leave the car at home and get public transport (busses stop outside) or a lift. For the off-peak traveller parking is available in the surrounding roads but you may have a reasonable walk to get to the station.

This isn't really the station fault it comes from a coffee shop within the station. I will review the coffee shop separate. The place is reasonable clean, I have used this station for as long as I can remember and I can't ever remember any of the staff smiling at me, or being that helpful. They do have toilets, and you can't smell them from outside the door, but I would have to be very desperate to use them. There is no lift access and but only flight of steep steps to reach the platform, once your on the platform there is a few old benches to sit on and a waiting room that is colder than outside with a strong smell of urine! overall the station could do with a makeover it's no jubilee line station. I have given two stars as even though I haven't had the best things to say about the station without it my commute to work wouldn't be as easy, so even if it is run down and a bit smelly, I need loughton underground station in my life!

This is one of the busiest stations in London as it acts as a main thoroughfare for not only trains…read morebut buses as well. Each time I've used this station it's been an easy experience. Even though it's extremely busy, it's easy to navigate and signage is clear. If you're in need of assistance, employees are very patient and helpful.
