I have been to Hess to watch several of my husbands hockey games. It's an old ice hockey rink, but…read moreevery time I walk in there, I see a new trophy that was brought home from the younger teams! That goes to show that the coaches there are of quality. I appreciate the heating unit above the stands where the spectators sit. However, on two occasions, I have been close to being in the line of fire of hockey pucks that went out over the netting hanging above the glass. It may be in Hess's best interest to have the netting reach to the ceiling so that other spectator's do not have such close calls with pucks. I am disappointed that the snack bar isn't open later. My husbands games are often between 9:30pm-10:30pm and there have been times where dinner is minimal. There is almost always a staff member behind the snack bar but they are never open. If more people come to watch the games at this time, it might be worth it for the facility to at least have it open for items such as granola bars. There is a vending machine with chips and pretzels, but there are no healthy(ier) options available.

After working there for years I'd like to leave an honest review for everyone from someone who…read moreknows all the insides and outs. The skates aren't bad, sure there's some minor wear on a decent few, but they are constantly being repaired and the company has also recently replaced half their stock. If you do honestly have any issues with the skates, you can go back to the counter at any time and request a new pair. Same with if you have any issues with personal skates your brought, typically the staff will try their best to help you fix your skates. It should be known however that sometimes they can't as not all of them carry their own personal tools after they got stolen numerous times. The food itself isn't bad, not a fan of the pizza but I do recommend the popcorn and when they have it the chicken strips. The drinks aren't really the best and I never agreed with the prices for how small they are, but there is the vending machines that people rarely use. It's only $2-$3 for a bottled drink and it's the best option there drink wise. The skate floor itself I'll give high praise to. There is yearly repairs and polishes, and it's swept and mopped before each day. Music isn't bad, there's a few different DJ's so the music isn't the same every day, and most of them take requests and will play the music as long as they have it and it's appropriate for the crowd. It should be known however that they don't stream off the internet, so they don't have unlimited options, if they say they don't have it, they genuinely don't have it, they aren't just trying to make you go away. The staff as a whole is pretty good. The floor guards are some of the nicest people as long as you just follow the rules, many negative reviews I've seen I was there for, and those people tend to conveniently leave out the numerous rules they were breaking. The rules themselves are posted in multiple locations and essentially all you have to do is not cause issues for everyone else. The management could be better. There is times that there's issues that they don't really put effort into fixing, but if you talk with other staff members they'll usually do better than them. Management usually only gets involved for bigger issues such as fights, but they do keep a cop on duty for the busy sessions so you don't have to worry about any fights. Parties are reasonably priced and I do highly recommend the private ones if you're doing 20+ guests. You'll get the entire rink for like 3 hours with music, skates, etc. The public ones aren't bad either but many people seem to underestimate how many people will be there since those happen during public sessions. So if you're doing under 20 guests, public is a good option, but anything over that I'd just pay the extra for a private one, it'll be well worth your money. Only real issue I'd say everyone has to face is the rising entrance fee. The head management keeps raising it for inflation, and honestly to some extent it feels unnecessary with some of the price increases. My best advice is check the hours online so you're getting your moneys worth. Tons of people will pay to get in, but they complain about the price after they chose to show up with only 45 minutes left in a skate session. $10 isn't the most unreasonable price when you are getting the full 3+ hours, just plan accordingly. Overall I'd rate the place at a 3.8 to 4. Prices can be steep but if you plan ahead then you'll be fine. Just actually follow the rules that are for everyone's safety and you'll have no issues.

Disclaimer: this review is from the perspective of a parent of a youth amateur hockey player…read more Ice Zone is a nice rink for regular season games. There is just one sheet of ice, and it is Olympic sized. That means it is larger than an NHL rink. I enjoy watching U16 and older play on the larger ice surface. Unfortunately, at Ice Zone the physical size of the building is not large enough to accommodate the olympic-sized ice AND spectator viewing. As you can see by the pictures, there is just a narrow sliver of area for spectators. There is also viewing upstairs above the concession stand but that means you can't hear the game and it is not centered so the viewing angle is strained. The concession stand is nice. They sell hot food and freshly brewed coffee. Coffee is my #1 requirement at ice rinks. I wait around a lot and enjoy sipping a hot, fresh coffee while talking with the other parents. There is also a nice pro shop. A pro shop is very important at a hockey rink because you never know when one of the players are going to be in need of something in a hurry. I wouldn't recommend this rink for tournament games because of the lack of seating. Tournaments usually have many more spectators than regular PAHL games. There used to be two sheets of ice at this arena, the other one being NHL-sized with a lot of spectator seating. But it has been closed for many years, and I learned this time around that a trampoline set up is going to be installed. So the NHL rink is closed permanently. So I gave this rink 4 stars because of the nice olympic ice, the ample parking, the fresh coffee, concession stand, and pro shop.

Decent rink with okay concessions, not a bad winter afternoon. My problem: why such high prices for only 2 hours of public skating? If your heart's not set on ice skating, go roller skating at Youngstown Skate or Skate Zone. Just as fun, in my opinion, and at a much better value.
