This is the location with the central fishing pond that has the small island in the middle, the decorative 'old-timey' outhouse, and the little cabin where you sign in and they sell merchandise. I was here with my family around Winter 2019-2020. I was on my evening walk and saw a campground worker driving a golf cart up the steep hill. There was a family and their kids watching him drive recklessly. As he went around the bend and came back down, he hit a slope and the whole golf cart flipped over. The cart was headed straight for me; I could have stepped aside and let it crash, but I decided to be a nice person and save the cart from hitting people below. I stopped the cart and parked it. As I walked towards the worker to check if he was ok and see if I could help, his pants fell down, and the nearby family started pointing and laughing at him. The worker was a white male, about 6ft tall, heavyset with a scruffy beard. Later that night, while I was out taking pictures of the fireworks, he and a friend--a tall, skinny white male with long black hair about 6ft 2in--drove their golf carts past me at alarming speeds, flipped me off, and called me the N-word. I was only a freshman in high school at the time and was in a daze at what I had seen. I haven't had a lot of incidents like this so you can imagine my reaction. I called the office to report this, and the woman I spoke to was dismissive and tried to claim they don't have an island in their pond or that I have the wrong park. She even tried to claim I described a 'young man' when I never did--I specifically described a 6ft, heavyset man with a beard at the time that I was tell her this which is funny because he was a young man and thus proving my point that she knows exactly who he is. I know exactly where I was because of the specific layout of the island and the office cabin at this address. If these men are still employed here, they should be terminated. No guest, especially a teenager, should be subjected to racial slurs and harassment by staff.

The campground has a serious rat problem, and because of it, our RV was damaged. This issue should have been prevented and properly addressed by management. This is not a kid-friendly place at all. Children are constantly being reprimanded for simply acting like kids. The property manager, Jessica, is rarely ever on-site. She is quick to complain and issue notices, but almost never available when residents actually need help. In contrast, the maintenance manager Daniel and his wife Becca are always around, responsive, and willing to help whenever needed. They are the only reason many issues get addressed. Residents are charged random fees with little explanation. Then management claims payments are late in order to tack on additional charges. Eviction notices seem to be handed out every couple of weeks whenever a new charge is added. The bathhouses are extremely outdated and honestly look like something out of an old horror movie. The cabins are old, poorly maintained, and some reportedly have black mold. During our stay, someone even passed away in one of the cabins. Management claims to conduct background checks, but some of the individuals staying here make that difficult to believe. Overall, this has been a terrible experience. Between the rats, questionable fees, poor management, outdated facilities, and lack of concern for residents, I would not recommend this campground to anyone.

Not sure when they closed the pool but it it was before it was too cold (they claim it's heated". The bathrooms are not heated, the little heaters they use don't work well. The community/laundry room is the same.. too cold to enjoy. We found multiple (5 or 6 so far) Screws on our site's gravel parking spot. There is no onsite manager. They have a nice guy who does maintenance named Gary. Jessica the person who "sold" us on the amenities later closed the bathrooms/showers for the winter during our 3 month contract. This side swiped us, we were lead to believe this "required amenity" for us was included along with the other services.. Multiple days / times they randomly shut off water access to the whole park, sometimes with little to no warning. To address their water pipe problems... apparently, it's not worth it to them to actually fix the problematic water system here.. not when they can shut off services whenever they want.. Also, very few dogs around here.. but we hear barking everyday and I've stepped in dog waste while taking garbage out to the dumpster (which bears visit, and is completely in the dark) (unlit area). There is basically no supervision around here, with a few different children wandering around and making noise just to make noise... but again, it's washed out by road noise.. Although emergency crews come up and down HWY321 more often than I would have expected... Bottom line, they do the bare minimum here and are not above misleading people to get them to sign these little leases. It's cheaper.. that's nice.. a lot of problems with this place although. It's owned by a group that owns a number of places; so there is slow contact and little vested interest into this park. This would be an awesome park for someone who actually cares about good services and people... but since it's grandfathered into the old restrictions rather than the news ones... it's tighter and more compact than restrictions allow for new campground's yet to be built. We've already had one flat tire in two months of being here (new tires)... seems like people leave here upset with axes to grind. Unreliable makes it unsafe.

Also the trails are on this map, so you can figure out how much uphill will be required. Friendly knowledgeable Park rangers. Always get good advice from the rangers. Lots of parking. Restrooms. Small museum. Big Field out back. Lucky enough to see herd of elk (pictured). Easy flat River trail starts here and about 3 miles out and back if you do the whole thing. Trail crosses under blue ridge parkway. Pics of the trail, people bridge, information sign, herd of elk enclosed. Here is a great afternoon! Start with lunch at wise guyz pizza (see separate review). After lunch cross the river on the people bridge. Turn right and short distance starts the River trail. Walk to the visitor center, chat with the rangers, check out the museum. Then walk back to wise guyz and your parked car. Good lunch and decent hike, doesn't get much better than that. Enjoy!

The Rangers inside the visitor center are very helpful. They also have quite a few passport stamps available inside at the ranger desk. There's a small museum inside. There's also a nice outdoor patio with chairs you can sit in to take in the view. While we were there a small herd of elk passed through, and it was fun to watch from afar. The Farmhouse Museum located behind the visitor center was really fun to walk through. There are many chickens walking around the area, as well as a hog pen. There's also a trail beyond the hog pen that allows you to walk down by the creek. This was a fun stop! Would highly recommend!

We also really enjoyed the hiking trail at the back of the campground. Our 2 interactions with camp store staff were very pleasant, and we met a lot of nice guests here too. Very quiet, clean, and well-maintained with lots of entertainment areas and community spaces available. It's so close to the national park and other off-site adventures, but you could easily have a stay-cation here and never leave! Wi-fi is included and worked great. One tip - if you plan to cook over the fire, get plenty of firewood because their fire pits are quite deep and the cooking grate height cannot be adjusted. Our kids are already asking when we can go back!

I loved hearing about how the cave was discovered by little kids - brothers - who spent their childhoods playing in it, and how they later grew up to save enough money to buy it outright and keep it in the family thereafter (and it's still privately owned by the family to this day!) At the start, we were a bit concerned about the amount of walking - and in particular, the steps. Our youngest is at the age where he wants to be independent, but he needs extra time to manage stairs (and some of those passages were narrow and steep enough to where we didn't feel comfortable carrying him) but we needn't have worried. Our large group had some adults who needed extra time with stairs, as well as people who took full advantage of our pace to snap more photos (and I've been on another cave tour where we were rushed through and unable to take many photos at all); nobody seemed to mind. I was also worried about not bringing a sweater, as the cave is 58 degrees year round, but it's a little bit of a workout which keeps you warm. If you have any health issues like a heart condition or anything affecting the function of your lungs it might be too intense (I'm just fat, and it was mildly strenuous: just when your heart starts to pound and you're breath is coming in faster you've reached your next destination and you return to resting state - this happens a couple times.) The cave is like being on another planet. We snapped some amazing photos. When it was time to return to the world above, my kids were sad that it was over.

If you're heading to Townsend. Tuckaleechee Caverns is a must-do…read more This place is absolutely worth the visit. Pricing is reasonable, and the experience is unforgettable. We had Kash as our tour guide and he was fantastic, energetic, kind, and amazing with kids. He kept everyone engaged, answered every question, and clearly knows the caverns inside and out. Even in a large group, you could still hear him clearly throughout the walk. The tour runs about 1.5 hours and covers over a mile underground. Be ready for stairs, lots of them (around 87 steep steps on the way out), and this is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. The cave floor is wet, so good shoes are a must. You'll also duck in a few spots, but not constantly. The views are unreal: a waterfall, a stream, stalactites, stalagmites, and massive natural columns you get to see up close while learning the history behind them. It stays cool inside, but you'll warm up from all the walking. It's well organized even when multiple groups are passing each other, and everything flows smoothly. The gift shop is also a win: well stocked, fair prices, and they accept cards. Bottom line: if you love nature, caves, geology, or just want a unique family experience, this is 100% worth your time.

The road in is through the mountains, but the campground is flat. There are no stores near by so bring everything you need including enough gas to get out. It's close the the Tail of the Dragon and the Foothills Parkway and not too far from Gatlinburg if you go in through the back way. I would definitely recommend this campground for those who like peace and quiet.
