Lawdy, this place is great, but it is only open three days a week, so reserve well in advance! Housed in a beautifully decorated rustic lodge in the NC Smokies, the food is served family style, and everything we had was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the other folks at our table. Always nice to share restaurant and touring tips. The menu is based on what is fresh. Our menu consisted of beef pot roast, pork roast, amazing cabbage casserole, famous tomato pie, green beans, tossed salad with yummy dressing, beets, carrots, garlic mashed potatoes, hot fluffy rolls, and cranberry orange poundcake. Dinner review!!! What a great meal! BYOB - so we arrived early and enjoyed some wine on the back porch with a gorgeous Mountain View. Once the Dinner Bell rang, it was inside to join another table of 4 (yep, family style) and the food parade started. A tossed salad with homemade yeast rolls and a herb butter. Then the main course - potatoes, Lima beans, squash casserole, fried apples, corn on the cob, and -tomato pie! Entree was a pork loin baked with local peaches. Nothing tremendously elegant - but absolutely delicious and fresh fresh fresh! Chocolate cherry cake for dessert and wonderful coffee. One price - $85 for 2.... A bargain! This is not for 5 star dining - but for a 5 star experience. Not that the food isn't good - it's VERY good. But you need to come for the experience.... Not just the food. First you drive to Ghost Town (yep, still miss it) and turn.... Then go up the hill. And then turn where the sign indicates, and go further. A mountain drive for sure. Park in the lot and admire the OLD log cabin inn. And cabins. and natural gardens. Then go in. You can BYOB 'cause there's no license. In cooler months , enjoy the cozy fireplace living room. Warm - head outside on the porch and enjoy the view. The MOUNTAIN view - spectacular leaf peep in the fall. Finally, you'll hear the dinner bell ring. You'll be seated - if less than 8, you'll be seated with others and served family style. (Since most are repeat visitors, prepare for lively,interesting conversation.). A salad in a huuuge bowl. A homemade tomato pie. Three or four or five veggies - if you are lucky you'll get pickled beets. (And I HATE beets - except for these). And finally - the pece de resistance.... Will it be a falll apart pot roast? Pork roast with apples? Chicken Francese?. Whatever - prepare for outstanding. . My hubs is the pickiest eater on the planet and never a quibble here! Finally, a light dessert ('cause you're stuffed anyway) and coffee and you're out the door - @ under $100 for TWO. As I said at the start... The food is very good. Smokey Shadows was built in 1953 by Henry T. Stewart "Harry" using local labor along with some help from my dad. I don't know where anyone got that it's over 100 yrs old!!! It was his dream project. He and my grandmother Beth Stewart ran it for many years until his health was such that they no longer could. Plus my dad, who was now married to their daughter & living in SC, had given them 4 grandkids they wanted to spend time with. So they sold The Lodge and moved to Clemson. The last time I visited was in 2012 when Ginger & her husband were running it. Took my mom up for a visit since it had been quite some time since she had been there. But NO it is not over 100 years old!!! It is a beautiful place that my granddad built with love and attention to detail to stand the test of time!!! read more

THE place to go off the grid, have a group retreat, church camp group or wedding venue!!! Have the right mind set: this is not just a great place to unwind, and unplug; BUT it is an experience staying in a 150 year old building that did not have electricity (originally) and will help you to slow down, simplify and relax. Probably the best valley view from the back porch in all of maggie valley!! (pic from the porch included) As far as 2020 COVID health stuff goes: they seem to be keeping it very clean and using masks / taking precautions appropriately. We rented out the place for our vow renewal (wedding party). Which is not that bad affordability wise. If you're looking for a rustic wedding backdrop, for 20-60 people and great view inside and out; this is it! They've got the perfect area for a dance floor and indoor ceremony, then a seperate dinning area, plus the back yard and deck where you can hear running water from a stream! Plus if you can be there on a cooking day, the meals are amazing. Apparently this is where "tomato pie" started. Or at least was made famous! I had one meal the and it was delicious southern comfort food that you could taste love in! This is also the perfect place to stay when skiing at Cataloochie; which is about a 5 minute drive further up the mountain. We went skiing one day and it was perfect.... You don't wanna have to go far when you're so soar afterwards! . It was about 10 minutes from the blue ridge parkway. Soco falls (which is worth seeing) in the Cherokee reserve was a about a 20 min drive. Water rock knob (an awesome place on the parkway with a 360 view and great sunsets is a 30 min or less drive. Verizon has excellent coverage up here. AT&T has adequate signal up ...and used my wifi hotspot on my phone easily. Well worth the stay. I only wish we could have stayed longer! read more

Found this gem by accident. Totally awesome experience. The owner is great and super accommodating. This is rustic, so if you want off the grid, relaxing, unplugged atmosphere, this is your spot. The homemade breakfast was terrific. They did not have a dinner the weekend we were there, but I have heard their pot roast is legendary. We are looking forward to going back. read more

We had our kids and grandkids in Maggie Valley for our annual family get-together and decided to do our night out at Smokey Shadows Lodge. They were awesome for helping us arrange the meal and invited us to come early to soak in the ambiance. The lodge is over 100 years old and evokes the memories we had as kids of mountain vacations. The folks that run the lodge seated us and started bringing food unnoticed. Salad first (incredible), and then entrees. That night we had roasted pork loin and fresh veggies (more than I can count), followed by strawberries on homemade shortbread. Of all the family meals we've had, this was the very best. We had congenial families at adjacent tables, and it was a wonderful evening. I'm almost reluctant to give such a glowing review,as we want to be able to get a reservation next time, but it was really that good. We definitely will be going back, and we'll be taking out of town company there to give them the real mountain lodge experience. read more

If you wanna know what North Carolina hospitality was like long ago, this is your place. Sure there aren't many reviews and stories from our era but people want to keep this place their little secret. Dinner at Smokey Shadows is so good and special sometimes it's hard to get reservations there during your trip. Yes after you enter this over 100+ year old log cabin style Lodge, admire the huge stone fireplace and quaint but comfy lobby all set up with wooden chairs, rockers and books for a late night read. , then meander down the narrow hall with low ceilings and hand made wooden doors to each room and history unfolds as you read letters, postcards and autographs containing tales of other visitor's vacations and visits written to the owners thanking them for peace, tranquility but most of all the view and the great hospitality and food. These are the real reviews and you will be very surprised by now many of them are stars, famous people, politicians. It is a historic lodge called Smokey Shadows just above Maggie Valley, NC with a two-story main lodge building and cabins. But this review is just about the restaurant part for now. Enjoy... Let me to start by saying that when you travel to North Carolina you'll see plenty of places promising good country cooking. I'm sorry to tell you that good country cookin doesn't always mean deep fried and battered dripping with grease. Now I can eat me some country fried steak, but this place is completely different. This is true home cooked food made fresh with loving care and the best part is the hospitality and Friends you will meet and make the night you eat here. It's a whole dinner experience, you pull up to this Lodge high in the hill, walk in and the lobby is already being set up with appetizers and wine and other beverages all brought by your co diners and new friends for the evening. Yes, you bring your own alcoholic drinks here (of course they provide the fresh ice tea and water if you're not thirsty for anything more). The lobby is comfortable and it's a good place to take off your coat and say hi to everyone but the best part is when you step out for the best view of the Smokies and sit on a rocking chair the long porch where everyone starts to gossip and we always make some friends even just for the night. Once dinner's ready, you'll be called into the dining room and don't be surprised you'll sit with a few people you don't know, but the tables are large (as in both wide and deep) and it feels just like a big family dinner. The difference here is Mama's cooking is not what you're used to. Since it is like Mama's cooking I can't really tell you what the menu is going to be the night you go, so the best bet is to call ahead because she made a different homemade meal almost every time we visited. Couple things that don't ever change besides all the old and beautiful antiques in the room you eat in, even the dishes, is how delicious and fresh everything there is. Out come huge bowls of salad and fresh bread followed by an entree with several sides and of course always includes her famous tomato pie. I can't describe it or how it's made, and don't know the recipe but it's absolutely the best. Typically you'll get a salad, entre, five or six sides, bread, and of course homemade dessert all included in one price. Everything is served family style on huge dishes you pass around the table just like a home made dinner at your grandmother's house when you were a kid. It is eat all you like too and you will be full but not greased out on processed food. I can't really say more because this place is exactly like I'm describing it it is an experience not to be missed if you're into anything like home cooked meals, old buildings, antiques and feeling like you just stepped into the past 70 or 80 years to have dinner. Notes: Dinner is served at a specific time starting with the part I consider appetizers and happy hour (which is bring your own drinks and snacks, win, cheese, beer or whatever your fancy) we usually end up joining up and sharing with others. Make sure to arrive enough time ahead of dinner to enjoy this part . There aren't multiple seatings, Just one setting a day and they don't cook dinner every night if it's not season so call ahead to make sure they're open and reservations are highly recommend. I would say this is more of an adult thing but now that I have a child of my own, heck I dealt with it and he didn't do too bad they have a few high chairs so can accommodate at least one or two small ones. The older kids would enjoy running up and down the hill blow the porch balcony while scaring mom and dad a bit while waiting for dinner. There is no real dress code but think of how you would dress if you're going to grandmother's house for dinner that's what I would wear. read more

Hummingbird cake made from scratch. Beautiful views off their relaxing cool porch. Friendly warm folks to visit with. Great, authentic and fun mountain experience! We had the pork tenderloin and all of the country sides...everything was good! My personal favorites were the homemade rolls and homemade Hummingbird Cake. I don't even like cake and this cake was to die for. We will be back for the Pot Roast! read more

My wife and I ate here this evening and were blown away! This is a lodge as well but we only drove up for dinner. They only serve dinner on certain nights so call for a reservation. Normally dinner is served at 630 but absolutely come at least a half hour before to sit on the back porch. They encourage you to bring your own wine and sit outside to mingle prior to dinner. The views were amazing. The food was served family style and was old fashion souther cuisine, including dessert. The people were very friendly. They serve what they called "tomato pie". Fabulous food and great customer care is dipensed at this quaint lodge on the side of a mountain in Maggie Valley It used to be an old grist mill and the stone and timber walls harken back to that past..It's a natural setting and good for the soul. You don't need spas and modern amenities to feel right at home. If you do need them, find another place to stay. This place is for purists. read more
