Awful experience with John.** I have never written a negative review about a contractor before, but his behavior was so rude, hostile, and unprofessional that I feel compelled to share my experience.
From the moment he entered my home, John repeatedly emphasized that he was giving us a "cheap price." To be clear, there was NEVER any disagreement about the price. He quoted it, we agreed to it, and I never complained or attempted to negotiate. His company was asking us to pay $1,200 in cash, yet he repeatedly acted as though he were doing us a personal favor.
I asked if he had shoe covers, as our home is strictly shoe-free. He did not, and when I briefly went to look for some, he became visibly annoyed and launched into an explanation about the liability of removing his shoes. When I couldn't find the covers, I allowed him to proceed because I wanted the job completed.
We hired him to install a flood detection system required by our homeowners insurance. When I asked how the device worked, he told me not to ask too many questions because he had no idea and was "only the installation person." Since he identified himself as a licensed plumber, this was concerning.
Because the device was being installed on our water main, I reasonably wanted to confirm that we had the correct model for our insurance requirements before installation. I asked for a couple of minutes to text my husband, who had arranged the appointment, and send him a picture. John rudely asked, "So, do you want this or not?" When I explained that I simply needed to verify the equipment, he stormed out, yelling that he had given us a cheap price and didn't have time to waste. I was so confused by this behavior.
He was outside by the time I got a hold of my spouse and then I asked him What the misunderstanding had been and if he would complete the job. He continued speaking loudly and aggressively across our driveway Which is truly embarrassing behavior for a person in the service industry. When I asked for his name so I could accurately describe the experience in a review, he accused me of making a threat. An honest customer review is not a threat.
As a woman of color, I found his aggressive behavior as a white man particularly intimidating. This was my home, and his conduct made me feel genuinely uncomfortable and unsafe. I was simply trying to ensure that the correct equipment was being installed, especially when he had admitted he could not answer basic questions about it.
There was never a price dispute. I was willing to pay the agreed-upon amount. No customer should be treated with hostility for making reasonable requests or asking questions about work being performed in their home.
I would NOT recommend this experience to anyone. Basic courtesy, professionalism, and respect for customers should be standard, regardless of the price quoted. read more
