My Carmel friends have so many options for liquor stores. I feel like they are reviewing a new…read moreplace every week. Lucky ducks. But, alas, we live on the east side, so we are blessed with Elite Beverages. I am thankful for Elite. Sitting here in my home without pulling up Google Maps, I can't think of another liquor store around me. The closest one I would visit would have to be Chilly's in Greenfield, but I don't want a 30 minute round trip and Elite is easy to hit on my way home. So, while I am not always impressed with Elite, I am thankful it is near by my place of residence. The store has a decent selection. Not great. Not bad. It's just a smaller store. They pack a lot in (read: the aisles are tight), but sometimes I just can't find what I am looking for. The attendants are kind, but I wouldn't say overly helpful. I am sure they would help if I ask, though. They just do their thing behind the counter. My only real gripe is the store layout. The dedicated spirit aisles are nice (tequila, rum, vodka) and I actually didn't realize how large their whiskey and bourbon selection was, so that's a positive. No, my gripe is with the wine. It is spread out all over the place. Whites here, Indiana wines there. They have a nice wooden wine rack, but it is literally where people line up to pay, so you feel like you are in everyone's way or they are staring at you. It the wine was just on the other side of the room, I'd be tempted to bump this up to 4 stars. I can't help but wonder: Is the liquor store supposed to be elite or their products? Like, "We are Elite. We offer beverages." Or, "We are a store. We sell elite beverages"? I am guessing the beverages. Maybe with 3 stars they should consider a name change. I did learn something important today: listen to people who know what they are talking about. I normally don't think about wine pairings. I like dry red so that is what I drink. Steak: dry red. Chicken: dry red. Pasta: dry red. But someone gave me a piece of advice I decided to heed. For dinner, I had bagged caesar salad. I do love a good caesar salad! Is bagged salad good? Sometimes. It was easy and sounded good. Well, the advice was to have a nice, crisp fruity Riesling with a caesar salad. Would that do the trick? Would that elevate this bagged caesar to gourmet status? Well, dang it if it didn't work. The riesling made the salad sing to my taste buds. Every bite was brisk and refreshing. Listen to people who are in the know and may know more than you. Words to live by, in my book!

They are willing to do searches and contact me once the item I'm looking for comes in. This store has a really nice and large selection of vodkas ranging from low end to fancy flavors to a few higher end vodkas. I opted for a mid range large bottle that's 100 proof. Since I mix it with sweet beverages I am not that picky about my vodka:) However, I was looking instead for our favorite scotches ... Grant's. Unfortunately, they don't carry Grant's, but they do have Famous Grouse which is really a close second. I'm not even going to say i've had a lot of different kinds of scotch whiskey, but I have had enough to have an opinion now. Their prices on most essential beverages are competitive.

I was in the SoBro area to try out another business. As I usually do when I'm in the area, I…read moredecided to check out and see if there was anything new in the area. I wheeled by Orangily, which calls itself a "wellness bottleworks shop," and was curious. Their signage noted that they were dog friendly and also "friendly." It felt like the usual vibe for the SoBro area. I kind of looked inside. I could really only see one side of a wall, but I definitely noted bottles. "That makes sense," I thought to myself. I didn't stop. I figured it was one of those hoity-toity shops where I seldom feel like I fit in and that's usually reinforced once I do enter. You want to see awkward? Follow me into a Hollister shop. The only time I fit in a Hollister is when we're talking about Hollister-branded ostomy supplies (and yes, if you're wondering, there are Hollister-branded ostomy supplies). But, I digress. As you can guess, I'd not heard of Orangily. After wheeling by it three times, I decided to trust the fact they were friendly and pay a visit. I used the handy-dandy ramp on the side of the sidewalk they share with United State of Indiana (facing East 54th Street) and check it out. I was greeted by someone whom I believe to be the owner/co-owner. She was friendly and hospitable on a quiet, chilly day in SoBro. I quickly asked "Okay, I just have to ask. What's a wellness bottleshop?" She provided an explanation. She noted that they'd originally described themselves as an alcohol-free shop (beer, wine, rum, etc.), however, that really doesn't completely sum up their offerings which also include CBD type offerings, THC drinks, and other functional beverages like adaptogens (which are a favorite of mine). Explanation in hand, I looked around. First off, it's worth noting this shop has a nice concrete ramp inside due to a weird elevation issue. It's beautifully done (I'd experienced it before with a prior tenant). The shop itself has a simple, nicely streamlined layout and I was able to get everywhere I wanted. I mostly avoided one wall that was primarily alcohol-free wine. They also have some terrific non-alcoholic beer options (I had no idea Stella Artois had an alcohol-free option). I checked out the adaptogens, the CBD options, and others. I noted they offer classes. The prices were more reasonable than I expected for this specialty area. I didn't end up buying anything this time around, primarily because I'm having surgery in a couple days and I figured having THC show up on a lab probably wasn't a great idea. I was quite pleased with this shop and will very likely return in the near future. With United State of Indiana and Orangily right next to each other along with The Clubhouse? This is a great little corner. So, here's what I experienced. There was great accessibility, a friendly vibe, and cool products at fair prices. Orangily does complimentary shipping for orders $75+ and they have a blog called Sparkling AF. Orangily has a warehouse store in Carmel between Cafe Patachou and Rackz BBQ on Main Street facing Hazel Dell Parkway.

Staff recommendations are clearly biased towards pushing the store brands. They alway say, "if you like 'insert name here' you'll love this!"
