I once had a barleywine at Eli's from a barrel that had been aged for two years in their own cellar. If that doesn't impress you, find another bar. read more

I'm not sure how to review this place. The place was beyond packed, even finding a place to sit and wait for a table took a 30 minute wait itself, and the staff clearly felt like they were busy enough to not give a shit about the happiness of any individual patron. I am assured that this is normal for a bar in a college town, so I'm not sure if it's fair to criticize them for being what they are. That said, I really didn't enjoy being in this place. When we finally got seated the service was good and it was a bit less grating than the bar area. The food was above average for pub grub, impressive since food is a small part of what they do here and could probably be a lot worse without anyone caring. I respect the effort on that front. The beer selection is good, no one disputes that. I think I would really enjoy this place if I could get in and out without spending hours elbow-to-elbow with douchebags and frat boys but unfortunately that ain't ever gonna happen. read more

Ordered take out from here and the spicy caesar was bland and the avocado was not ripe and lettuce was young and watery. Also the wings had no flavor and the poutine was just not good. Not worth the price. read more

I went to Eli's on a blind date last night. Eli Cannon's has a great beer menu (I am not a huge beer officionado), tasty food, and the wait staff was very friendly. I ate out on their patio/deck area in the back, and it was simply delightful. A great place to sit quietly and talk, get to know someone, have a good time. I was sad that I had to work (at 10pm - lovely how the night shift turns me into a pumpkin before midnight), because I think the patio area would be great after dark. They have a little 'beach area' with sand and beach chairs and tiki torches. I definitely want to go back on my night off and have some drinks and chill on the deck. I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

If you been any where near Eli Cannon's in downtown Middletown, and you haven't visited; smack yourself. Now get in a car and go get your posterior in there.... I don't care what day of the week it is, Eli's is classic tap room hospitality and you won't find a better selection of beers & ales; of which a majority of the 30+ (on a regular basis) are freshly tapped within the current two weeks or less, typically in peak seasons all within the current few days even :D Eli's also has a decent menu, with a wide array of sandwiches, appetizers, and standard bar fare but with a unique Eli's spin. My fiance is a huge fan of their Grilled Portabella Panini and the super-secret-you-have-to-be-shot-if-I-even-tell-you-what-it's-called dessert that they only make for old friends who I am sure are seen as a pain in the butt for not letting them feel bad for taking it off the menu..... Service really depends on the customer as far as I've ever experienced, granted I've been seen in Eli's for the past ten years or so on monthly basis. If you are a true beer geek, or avid fan even you can't miss every Tuesday Night as Eli's hosts a new brewer and offers special swag raffles etc... Strong caution unless you know what to expect, Tuesday nights are to be avoided because it is standing room only and you will wait hours for a table if you think you are getting one....Just belly your way up to the bar, and grap a fresh pint and enjoy! Summer offers a nice outdoor patio, perfect for sipping in the sun; and also during the right seasons Eli's is also the only local bar I've come across that will serve traditional cask ale at the appropriate room temp. So if beer is your thing, and food can be best enjoyed in as liquid bread, then Eli's is a definite Connecticut spot not to miss. * Note as of current: Eli's has been in a state of construction by the town of Middletown's revitalization efforts and parking is currently only in a private lot behind the building through the auto repair shops lot.... read more

I do not want to damn the place entirely because I have been there a few other times to find the atmosphere, drinks and service halfway decent. Last night was the first time I had been in a few years, and my drive to go was due to a recommendation from a woman I work with regarding the wings. I am a self proclaimed wingaphile who really enjoys critiquing ones that come with a "warning label." These wings are advertised as being "so hot that you do not get a refund if you are unable to finish them." Intrigued, I went around 7; which is considered super early for a night out in Middletown. When I got there, I grabbed a seat at the bar because I didn't want to be one of those rude, lone customers who hordes tables all to themselves. It wasn't crazy busy, but was busy enough and I saw that a couple sitting a few stools down had an order of wings, so that was proof that it would be okay to order food at the bar. The bartenders seemed less than interested in serving and more interested in talking about their infantile, twenty-something drama and shenanigans with two waitresses who seemed content with standing in the corner doing absolutely nothing else. I ordered a beer, but just wanted to chill out and take in the atmosphere before ordering my wings along with a second beverage. I got the beer almost immediately, but was never asked how everything was, or if anything else was needed. It was almost as if there was some sort of secret ingredient in my drink that made me completely invisible. After having been there for close to an hour, I finally got irritated and decided to leave. I am not kidding when I say that it would have been very, very easy to walk right out without paying. However, I wasn't raised to be a complete scumbag, loser so I left some cash on the bar and bounced. I am willing to give this establishment another shot because I really, REALLY want to try those wings. However, I will plan my time accordingly by going on a day when it is less likely to be crowded and there aren't infantile, lowlife frat boys/sorority chicks who think they are way too cool to actually work running the joint. read more

Sadly tried coming here and stood in the entrance area for 10 minutes with no hostess! I'm sure the place is good, but there are plenty of great places in Middletown or nearby Hartford that are also good. I guess we will try again another day. read more

Pros: Awesome Beer List Cons: Rude Patrons Rude Service (Both Bar and Dining areas - ask about the mug club and see what kind of response you get) 2hrs and 30mins before we were seated and received dinner (I expected a long wait to be seated since it was a saturday, but nothing like we tolerated) Pesto mac & cheese was really grass flavored elbows with a few sprinkles of cheese Ungodly wait inbetween beers Also, a live possum lives in the outdoor seating area and is housed here as well. Well, hello hello helllllo funky little bar in Middletown. Love it. This place reminds me of a hideaway you'd find in Cambridge (oh how I miss you)...so funky with tons and tons of random...pardon me....shit everywhere. You'll find wall to wall trinkets, random photos, plastic dolls...you get the point. The menu reads like a book with lots of grub. I went for a burger. It was cooked perfectly. With a very extensive beer menu, this is a no fail joint. And for me, any place that offers a burger topped with bbq pulled pork, cheddar cheese, and bacon....well, it's a-okay in my book. read more

My wife and I have been coming here for years. We absolutely love this place. We're huge local beer nuts, and Eli's delivers every single time. Great rotating beer list, and an awesome food menu to boot. Don't get too attached to either though, as they'll change if you look away for too long. Probably the thing we love the most about Eli's. Special shout out to Jennie and Ashley up on the patio, what a pair of rockstars they are. read more

If you told me I went to Eli Cannon's and didn't have any Gandhi Bot (that was on tap) I would say you were crazy. But, of course there was a reason for that. Sip of Sunshine, Beer'd Hobbit Juice and Maine Brewing Co. Lunch just to name a few. Let's just say the beer list last night was ridiculous. As for the food. We ordered 12 wings which we were able to split up, so we tried the Sweet & Spicy and the Bourbon Teriyaki. Both were great. Perfectly cooked and just the right amount of flavor. For my meal I ordered the Reuben. This was phenomenal. All the components of this sandwich were done flawlessly. The rye bread was thick, soft and fresh. The corned beef was cooked perfectly. Right amount of cheese and sauce made this sandwich delicious! The night started off with great beer and ended with amazing food. Actually ended with more great beer! read more

Eli's is ALWAYS a good pick. Their food is pretty spot on, their tap list is impressive, and the beach in the back is a great touch! I've been here countless times, and will continue to return as long as the above-mentioned highlights remain the same! read more

sweet mother Eli Cannon's, your beer list is better than anyplace I've even been in NYC. I've never even seen or heard of about 30% of it. Your Double Chocolate Stout is like dessert. I'm totally impressed. Your service is impeccable, and your atmosphere (especially that sweet outdoor patio, is fun and leads to interaction between groups and everyone just having a great time. Your food leaves nothing to be desired, especially that Jamaican jerk pasta my boyfriend got. Honestly, Eli Cannon's, that was a stroke of genius. It's been a few months since I visited you, and I am still thinking about that pasta and how I can possibly recreate it. Oh, and whatever I had (a wrap or something) was also delicious, but it was lost in the delicious jamaican jerkiness of the pasta. Your sweet potato fries were great too. I wish you were in the city. I wish you were closer. I wish my apartment weren't too good to give up and that I could telecommute so I could move closer to you. I miss you, baby. read more

Eli Cannon's - This is Matt trying the yucky beer - American Near Me - Middletown, Connecticut

The quality of food has significantly, significantly declined over the years. In fact, tonight was our last night eating there. We had a chicken sandwich and the black bean burger-both of which were ridiculously greasy. Not like juicy greasy, like oily, fried, greasy. Buns, toppings and all. I couldn't even finish my meal. The fries were also incredibly soggy (again-just like the last 2 times). The last time I had the short rib tacos...they came out cold and very greasy as well. I had 2 Captain and Cokes today. Had I not watched them pour the alcohol, I'd have thought it was just Coke. Watered down. I asked for lime with my drink, but they ran out... The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. Neither of us would use them. I'm not a priss by any means. I won't go into detail. It was also 7pm on a Sunday night...not midnight on a Friday. They are going to be renovating their bathrooms, but it's the upkeep that needs the most renovating. Other than our server, Katelyn, being great, the only thing that is good is their beer selection. Go there for beer. That's it. read more

I took advantage of Eli Cannon's offerings for Middletown Restaurant Week to make a dinner visit. Up until now, I've only indulged in appetizers and beer. More on the beer later. I'd forgotten that, with cooler weather, Eli Cannon's loses a lot of seating. Their patio area is pretty big, and in the summertime it's a great place to eat and drink. But in mid-October, we found we had to wait a little while for a table. How the host figured out that it was ready I have no idea. We were standing near him, and he suddenly says, "I've got a table for you," and he did. It must have been telepathy, which is pretty impressive. My daughter's squash ravioli appetizer gave her great joy, and I was pleasantly surprised at the size and flavor of the grilled salmon "small plate" I had. She chased down and swallowed every last morsel of her chicken, goat cheese, and asparagus entree, and I didn't have too much trouble putting away my New York strip steak. It's pretty solid fare. The brick walls are barely visible beneath a visual cacophony of posters, paraphenalia, signs, bumper stickers, and who knows what. It's rather fun, though I'm glad that the earthquake that struck that night (yes, it was that night) wasn't any stronger. I entirely missed the earthquake, in fact, because it's a pretty noisy place and the shaking was simply lost in the sound. A couple tables got a little louder than I'm used to, which surprised me a little. And... the beer. Eli Cannon's has a lot of working taps, and a long list of beers every night to serve, with some local brews, some big names, some seasonals, some internationals, and some because it seemed like a good idea at the time. At a guess, I'd imagine about a quarter to a third of the offerings are pretty stable, which leaves a lot of room for new things to try. Given the noise level, I need to be in a certain frame of mind to visit, but when I am, I know where to go. read more

This place is very noisy and doesn't appear to be very clean. Very expensive for just a burger and beer. They charge extra for everything. $.50 for mayo. $1.00 for cheddar cheese etc. Not a great vibe. Don't recommend. read more

This place is beer geek heaven. The taps are interesting, plentiful, and constantly rotating. Every Tuesday a brewery is featured, sometimes with reps walking around with samples. Often they have rare or new release beers, as well as themed parties. The best way to be in the know is to be a fan on Facebook, you'll get the info on upcoming events and the Tuesday tastings ahead of time so you can plan your trips. The negatives: Not the greatest food. They seem to focus on spicy and hot things, with a plethora of hot sauces. Nothing stands out here, just normal pub-grub. It's also small. Real small. Not to mention regulars fill the bar area almost constantly. There is a patio, but I haven't been out there yet. Parking is possible, if you're a little creative and don't leave your GPS out. read more

One of the best craft beer lists around. Always rotating and a great selection. Food is pretty decent though overpriced (welcome to CT). The terrible staff here give an otherwise 5 star place get only 3. Servers seem somewhat better than the bartenders, but not by much. When the bartender finally makes his way over to you, you'll probably just get a nod. No "Hello" or "How da ya do?". If you don't know exactly what you want or have any questions you'll probably get a frustrated sigh and a condescending response. I always know what I want but I've witnessed some people being treated poorly. I've been booted a half hour before scheduled close by a manager who just started shutting off the lights halfway through a beer. No advanced notice, 3 or 4 other patrons, I guess the bartender wasn't even aware they were closing. His reasoning was that there was some special event the next day. Go here for the great craft selection if you don't mind waiting or being treated like a douchebag. Go here if you value coolness over kindness. read more

I stopped in here last Wednesday for a beer and some food. It was my second time at any restaurant since reopening and the first one with draughts and this place does not disappoint. The food is some of the best of its kind in the region and the beers are well curated with some pretty inspired and lively decor to go along with it. Maria; if you're fortunate enough to get her as your server, is very knowledgable about the menu with an excellent sense of timing and rotation while still taking a few moments to get to know her tables. If you're in Middletown for any length of time, you won't regret making some more to experience Eli Cannon's. read more

You guys. They built a beach in the back. A beach! We stopped by Eli Cannon's for an after-dinner drink, and as you may have surmised, I was impressed. On a warm night, it was fun to sit outside on the plastic Adirondack chairs, underneath the strands of light strung from tree to tree, and pretend we weren't in central Connecticut. The beer list was extensive, as advertised, though I stopped reading after Harpoon Pumpkin UFO-- not the craft-iest beer, but I can't help myself. Check out the backyard beach soon, before the Adirondack chairs are stored for winter! read more

I walked in here today full of hope and wonder as the outside decor and inside decor were unreal - a cross between cozy and American Pickers gone wild. It looks like Tony Montana (a la Scarface) sampled ALL of his merchandise and went on a crazed decorating spree. If I was a beer lover or was just basing my rating on the cool, kitschy decor, and very friendly server, I would definitely give this place 5 raving stars, BUT the food was pretty awful. I'm STILL tasting the garlic parmesan fries (that I had 6 hours ago) and my burger was WAY overcooked (hockey puck consistency). My husband barely ate his pulled pork nachos. Nonetheless, I heard they are changing their menu and having a Mardi Gras party on Fat Tuesday...so, as their coolness factor is off the chart, I will most likely head back AFTER I eat dinner for a few drinks. read more

Ohhhhh Eli's, this is by far my favorite place in the entire state of CT. The ambiance of the place is amazing from the moment you step inside. Go grab some popcorn to nibble on out of the old style popcorn maker and order a beer (they are all amazing - no matter what your preference!) from the bar while you wait for your table to be ready. Once you do have a seat there are so many cool things scattered throughout the restaurant to discuss and look at. And the menu is great - once you order the food you'll be even more so amazed at how it tastes (a few favs = classic nachos, fried pickles, and the Ruben - but it's all to die for.) Truly a gem in Middletown! read more

This place is my go-to! I'm very into buffalo wings and I try them wherever I go. This place has the BEST buffalo wings I've ever had! The service is always great, too. I love the atmosphere, especially the patio area. Since I live in Middletown year-round, I can actually enjoy it in the warmer months without it being overrun by college students.* They also have an extensive local/craft beer selection. Love this place and so grateful to have this great place walking distance from my house! *Not to dis the college students. They're an important part of our local economy! But I'm 30 years old and my college days are long behind and I don't enjoy crowds. read more

I will admit that I don't think Eli's is for everyone and that it seems a wholly different place in the summer when the back patio area is open. Having written that, I think this is one of the best combinations of craft draft beers and surprisingly good food around. The pineapple jerk chicken skewer app is sweet and hot and perfect. The wraps, burgers, and sandwiches are wonderfully varied, although my go-to here are the wings. The beers selection is simply awesome and constantly changing. Yes the interior can be hard to navigate, and arguably overly kitschy. I happen to be into kitschy when the beer is this high quality and the food this tasty to accompany the beer. read more

Great place! They have like 60 beers on tap and the bar tenders are always very knowledgeable. The food is good but a little pricey in my opinion. It is standard American bar food: burgers, wings, stuff like that. The reason to go here is definitely for its character. Very unique decor and vibe. The regulars get to have a personal mug which is hung up on the wall behind the bar. If you are looking for a good place to sample a large variety of beer, this is your spot. read more

One of my favorite hangouts. Beer aficionados need look no further- the expansive list is ever changing, with enough selection on any given night to suit all palates. The menu, like the beer list, is diverse and loaded with flavorful selections. While the early departure of the Flight o' Fries was a disappointment, the menu remains a winner. The burgers, sandwiches, and salads are all great, and definitely the way to go. The larger entrees are just that- large, and after a warm-up of two beers and the DELICIOUS hot wings, are generally a bit more than I can handle (and I'm no lightweight). Not bad for leftovers, though. On the rare occasion that I opt to not get wings, the French Onion soup is a KILLER appetizer. It's always served just hot enough, and is loaded with gooey cheese, soggy bread, and sweet onions. An absolute must-have. My Personal Favorite- 'The Boss'- grilled chicken topped with bacon, ranch, and pepperjack cheese on a toasted roll. This used to be served on tasty ciabatta bread, and while the toasted roll is, in my mind, a step in the wrong direction, the sandwich still prevails as my pick. The atmosphere is funky- the walls are decorated with all those things from the flea markets and garage sales that you wish you didn't have the better judgment to pass on. In the warmer season, they have a back patio with umbrella'd picnic tables, which offer some fresh summer air to go along with your cold beer and hot wings. Somewhat surprisingly, (and fortunately) the clientele is NOT predominantly college students. Affordable, tasty, and original. Definitely a winner. read more

I have made so many memories (and probably lost at least a few) at Eli's. This bar is an absolute staple in the CT Craft Beer Community. Not only does Eli's have consistently great draft and bottle lists, but they offer a wide variety of styles, host tap takeovers and dope beer events, have a mug club, AND an awesome yearly craft beer fest! Let's not forget the beach . Eli's, you send me. read more

The beer selection is interesting, although the last time I went they were serving mostly Sierra Nevada branded beers. The interior space is eclectic. The food is decent pub fare. The bartenders are awful; anti-service, condescending, unhelpful with an attitude of "Why are you even here" Go to Eli's bar, be amused by the anit-service, have a decent beer once they actually wait on you. Then you can save money because this bar is NO TIP material. Don't tip those guys. I wanted to like it, it's on my way home. I'm not stopping at this bar anymore. read more

This place is a hit or miss. You can either really luck out and have a wonderful experience OR the place can smell, be overcrowded and have bad service. The food and beer are really good here and I have rarely had a bad meal at Elis. I love that they change their menu yearly, but that is also my complaint. They got rid of one of my favorite salads and I cannot find anything that I like more. Overall, I will return, but it will not be at the top of my list. read more

Fun place, REALLY cool patio with a beach theme....makes it feel as if you are actually on vacation, or at least not in CT. It's really nice and relaxing out back and they did a great job of making the patio into such a cool hangout. I finally made my way out to Middletown to check out Eli Cannon's. My first impression upon entering the dark, eclectic space was "I like it!" soon followed by "Hmm. Stale beer smell." Before you roll your eyes at me, I'd like to point out that I've eaten at plenty of pubs/taprooms/taverns that don't smell THIS stale lol. My boyfriend and I sat at a cozy little booth. Had we known about the beachy seating area out back, we would have checked that out instead! Might've helped to be outdoors. We both ordered the Scalcs Lite, a black bean burger on a gluten-free bun. Tasted pretty good, but the texture left much to be desired: the patty was mushy and the bun too dense for my liking. I'd go back for the casual atmosphere, and to give the food a second chance. read more

Eli Cannon's has the luck of the draw of being located at the top of Main Street, acting as the unofficial welcome mat a street filled with many cool bars and restaurants. I've been there a few times now, and I've always had a pretty decent experience. The inside is very cramped, with small corridors shooting off and not much extra space. The decor is certainly eclectic, with the ceilings and walls being filled with all sorts of random things (just inside the entrance, there are a couple of what I'm assuming are re-purposed dentist chairs where people can sit and wait for a table). Old beer bottles, Mardi Gras beads, stickers from just about every brewery in a 100 mile radius, and a broken old Middletown Press placard are just some of the many, many things that sort of give the feeling of pack rat-ness that could be seen as either charming, hipster, or busy, depending how you want to look at it. To get a table, you have to really put in effort to track someone down, as there is no standard hostess that I've seen, and the people you'd have to find aren't located at the entrance of the place. Rather, you have to walk past the bar and around a corner to hopefully find someone. The beer list is really the focus here, they have an impressive list on draft which are conveniently categorized by flavor profile so there is less guesswork when you want to try something new. My last time out, I had their Cajun poutine which was really nicely done. The combination of cajun spice with cheese curds and gravy made for a perfect appetizer. Their pretzels were disappointing, as what should be softer pretzels were very tough and nearly inedible towards the end as they cooled down. Better off getting a pretzel from The Hop Knot down the road if you want one that badly. I haven't had the chance to sit out in their back patio beach area yet, but it looks like a very cool place to have some food and drinks if the weather is nice. The prices are a little higher than you'd like, as two people could easily creep towards $100 if you want more than one drink. Overall, convenient location, although the parking lot could be a mess at times. Cool atmosphere and an ample beer selection! read more

For this area of Connecticut, it's a surprisingly impressive beer list and if you are a beer fan in the area I recommend stopping by. I especially like the place in the summer when you can sit outside at their "beach" in the beach chairs and dig your feet in the sand- a totally weird experience in the middle of no-man's-land CT. In the winter, however, the seating is extremely limited and filled with a less than desirable clientele that you are forced to rub up against in the absence of any space to move or breathe. Their menu has a pretty extensive and diverse list of your typical bar food- I highly recommend the buffalo shrimp and nachos and have heard very good things about their burgers. Bottom Line: one of my fave divey bars in the area but really only worth going to in the warm summer months. read more

Impressive beer list and crazy decor, Your night at Eli's will never be a bore. The crowd is laid back and the servers are chill, Finding a better bar would surely take skill. Eli Cannon's is the best bar you will ever go to in the summertime. The draft list changes just about every day so there is endless variety. Beers include many local favorites brewed right in Connecticut or even right in Middletown. There is a huge outdoor area with picnic tables, a "beach" with sand/beach chairs, and a second dining area. The decorations are one-of-a-kind and allow you to just sit and look around for hours. The staff is always helpful and quick to fill up your glass. The bar food is greasy, flavorful, and pairs perfectly with beer. There's not much to not like about Eli Cannon's unless you are a cranky ol' fart that only likes wine coolers. The only drawbacks are that there are no happy hour specials and it gets ridiculously packed in the winter because the big outdoor area is closed. If you like good beer in a unique atmosphere, this is your place. read more

Eli Cannon's has been on my to do list for years now. Lucky to be in the area last Fri night with friends and stopped by. I have to admit its a little overwhelming walking in to their eclectic bar. Lots of stuff everywhere, but once we got our bearings we headed to the small bar. They have a great tap selection and we are big fans of Allagash beers and they had about 10 different types on tap. It was great to try some new ones. Once we all had our drinks we headed outside. The people we were with had been here before but have never been outside. I only knew of it by reading some of these reviews. Its a great change of pace from the small inside area. Its a nice beach patio area with many tables , Adirondack chairs and my favorite thing a sandy area. I'm a beach guy, so that was pretty cool. Pretty cool laid back vibe. Only wish there was a bar outside. I'm sure its some zoning or liquor permit thing. It was hard to get a server over so we just went back inside for more drinks. Not the end of the world . Next time I will try some of their food and update my review. Will be back at some point. read more
