I've always loved the original Elephant Coffee Shop in the town where my family now live. As of yet untouched by the coffee chains (save for a Costa Express in the big Sainsburys) it's great to see that there is space for the independent coffee shop in these country villages.
So when the company decided to open another coffee bar in the next village down, of course we all had to go and check it out!
This place is a bit bigger than its counterpart - gorgeous location situated on a road right by the front, in the summer I can totally see people ordering coffee and sitting outside to drink in the view across to nearby Wales. In slightly chillier spring though, we sat inside - although the sun did come out as we left, so I imagine that the back area could turn into a bit of a sun trap. There were already some families out there with their dogs (since it's an animal friendly area), very comfortable and quaint!
The coffee is a mild roast, but with a really nice deep nutty flavour, I almost prefer it to Starbucks! (This is actually quite a big deal to me, I know how many people hate the company but I CANNOT get enough of Starbucks coffee!).
The decor is stripped back - exposed wooden walls and pipework visible in the ceilings gives the shop a cool, slightly industrial feel to it. Obviously done to appeal to a younger clientele, the premise also stays open later as a bar to attract some nightlife later in the evening.
Definitely have to pop down to check that out when I'm back! read more
