I have come here at least half a dozen times and have always seen John D. I moved to Bowie from Germantown, MD about 3 years ago and had tried several other local massage studios with mixed to awful results. I have severe neck and back tension for the last 12+ years with frequent tension headaches and always ask for *DEEP* pressure. At other massage studios I've either had a massage therapist that was not using enough pressure, wasn't focused on the areas I requested, or did not seem to be well-trained to give a massage. And even if I found a therapist at a studio that provided a decent massage, the next time I would get someone else with wildly different (poor) skills, or after circling the "problem areas" on their form or telling the therapist directly what I wanted, I would just get a generic massage over my whole body instead of any focus areas and they wouldn't avoid the clearly marked "avoid" areas. And even if they immediately recognized and acknowledged "your neck is very tense!" I would leave feeling frustrated, still tense, and feel like I wasted money. Or the therapist would use things like their elbows (why?) to jab into me which was "deep" but didn't seem like it was an actual massage technique or if it *was* it wasn't used appropriately, as deep does not = pushing as hard as you can. After dozens of massages over the years I can tell on the first visit if a place is worth going back to. Onto John: From my very first visit here (Sept 2025) John immediately sat me down and asked, what was bothering me? After going through my issues, he'd then confirm "Would you like me to focus on your neck and shoulders today?" and then get to work. John is a rather big guy, (not sure how tall he is but definitely taller than 6'3!) and can look intimidating but he's a big softie! As a woman who mainly preferred female therapists, I was immediately comfortable with John and have exclusively booked with him since that first visit because I can tell he knows what he's doing and I always feel better after my appointments with him. I've also gone to my last several visits in a walking boot (I have an achilles injury) and he's made sure I'm comfortable and I completely trust him to avoid my injured leg and listen to what I need each time. My hips and lower back have been very sore from the walking boot height difference compared to my functional leg and he's focused on that recently at my request and it has helped immensely with my pain. I've always booked 1 hr visits but have considered booking longer visits which I never really have done elsewhere! Elements is more expensive than the non-chain studios in the area, but those places weren't worth the cost anyway! Another national chain (has envy in the name, you know who!) gave me a super lackluster massage in the past so I had been hesitant to try a chain again, but my experience at Elements has remedied that fear! Elements also offers gift card deals occasionally that give a discount which I just utilized for their mother's day specials. I will continue to book with John for as long as he is available at the Crofton location! I've also had great experiences with the receptionist - when using gift cards, canceling an appt after I chose a different day and time, and I've also had her reach out to offer an earlier time when John had a cancellation. The only thing I wish they offered was the ability to cancel your own appointments online but I understand they might not offer that so that people aren't constantly cancelling. A small critique as calling or texting the receptionist gets a quick reply always! Although I have not booked with anyone else besides John (looks like I've had 6 appts with him) based on his skills and knowledge I would bet the other therapists know what they're doing also! I will also consider getting a membership here because I know that I will keep going back :) read more

I have been trying to make an appointment for over two hours now and the phone line (410) 451-6777 has this recording on it: "Your call cannot be completed at this time, try us back at a later date" What in the world is going on at this Spa? This is absolutely crazy. I do plan on getting a massage but not from this place and I will not ever recommend a Spa that doesn't have a live person answering the phone, hell I would have even left a message if it would have allowed me to. This Spa should be shut down if they don't have the manpower to have someone answer the phone and schedule appointments. read more

I was a loyal customer for years and had no complaints. Love the admin staff, and appreciate how they go out of their way to help. But the company cannot keep staff no matter how they try. Every therapist I have liked has only massaged me once, occasionally twice. They all quit. Elements has cancelled every appointment I have made for the past four months, sometimes at the very last minute. I wouldn't recommend unless you have no other choice. read more

I have only had a few massages in my life. One of them was at this salon. I had a lot of upper back and neck pain that I was sure was stress related because we were in the middle of purchasing a new home and moving. Regardless, I figured I deserved a little pampering! I just got a basic deep tissue massage. It was just what I needed! My massage therapist was professional and knowledgeable, but also friendly. She took her cue from me and engage in just enough conversation to make me feel comfortable, but also provided enough quiet for me to relax and really enjoy the experience. The massage room was dimly lit and very well appointed. It was relaxing from the moment I entered. Soft music played and helped me too relax and prepare for my massage I am very petite, so she started a lot softer than I think she might have for someone who was not as tiny. I assured her she could use more pressure and it was amazing. If you have never had a massage, do not be intimidated or scared. They take a lot of time to ask you what brought you there and get a feel for what you are looking for. They explain everything they are going to do so that you were not surprised. Whether you have physical pain you were trying to alleviate or you are just treating yourself to a little pampering, I highly recommend this salon. Wonderful massage. A word to the wise, be careful booking here with unpredictable traffic. Phyllis at Elements in Crofton, as always deserves the highest rating. She's magic. I think I was melting into REM sleep after a few minutes with her. That was particularly noteworthy since I arrive late having been stuck in traffic on route 3. While Phyllis deserves the high ratings the front desk staff, not so much. Very sadly there was a serious accident on route 3 and I along with others were delayed. It's a sad situation based on the condition of the vehicles. The people involved are suffering for sure. I've noticed an uptick of accidents along route 3. It gives me pause now when I think about driving along there. Since I was late, my massage was really just about an hour long. So be it. However, I was charged for the original 90 minutes. The smart costumer service move would have been to offer a voucher for a portion of for my next visit. Just a portion. There would still be a portion I'd pay for! But no such offer. With some sort of incentive to come back, I'd have booked something before heading out their door. But today, I walked away resolved not to return for the indefinite future. Just too risky. Yes, I get that if you miss an appointment, you get charged. I was on my way and would have made it in time but for the very tragic occurrence. I'm going to miss Phyllis, since I'll have to refrain from booking appointments there for the time being. There are increasing chances of getting delayed and now I know there's no forgiveness in spite of the fact it may be no fault of my own. read more

I'm a little confused and defeated. I scheduled a deep tissue massage but what I received was far from what I expected. I came in a great deal of pain due to the knots in my shoulders. I explained this to my massage therapist but all she did for over an hour was gently, unevenly and quite loosely pat my back. I would equate this "massage" to having someone lazily rub sunscreen onto your back. She asked how I was feeling and I explained again that I was very tight and I really needed her to focus on my knots in my shoulders but she responded saying that she was only trying to relax me in this session and that it would take a few more sessions to get to my knots. I've been to different Elements locations before and have always thoroughly enjoyed my experience and for this reason, I booked with them...but this time, I felt rushed, ignored and taken advantage of. Upon arrival, my temperature was taken and I was required to fill out a short health questionnaire. Masks are required by everyone. My therapist, Steven, provided a good massage and focused on the areas that we discussed. I hope to return in the very near future. My first time being at Elements. I arrived a tiny bit late, rush to fill out paper work, then headed to the bathroom. Then I meet my massage therapist Robin for a 80 minute hot stone massage. During the massage Robin was mostly giving me a Swedish massage with little use of hot stones. I was disappointed that I didn't get a real hot stone massage. I know different therapists have an individual style when it comes to hot stone but I feel a hot stone should have lot's of stones to massage the muscles with little bodywork on neck and maybe hands, I was very relaxed in a drunken massage state. If I book another appointment with Robin, it would be a Swedish massage. read more

I am so disgusted by the lack of customer service. I received a call Thursday at 11:20 am to remind me of an appointment on Friday at 10:00 am. I was told in the voicemail that they had a cancellation policy, but was never told what that cancellation policy was. By the time I was able to call at 4:00 pm to change my Friday appointment I was told it was too late and I would be charged $35 to change it because it was less than 24 hours notice. I wasn't reminded of the appointment in a reasonable amount of time so, why should I be charged? I was furious. I was changing my appointment because I had to take my sick pet to the vet. Is that not a good enough reason? If I am not provided with a detailed cancellation policy, why do I get charged for changing an appointment? What happens with you are sick? I am sure their therapists wouldn't want a sick client there. I only chose Elements because I received a spa finder gift card. I will NEVER return there. I recommend you don't either. read more

I have the same problem Carrie K has. On this past Saturday I called Element Massage and tried to get an appointment for Saturday for my son. He was in a lot of pain in his back. The person I spoke with on the phone told me that she did not have anything on Saturday but she had an opening on Sunday at 12:30. So I told her we would take It. She told me to tell my son to be there by 12:15. On Sunday morning something came up and he was not going to be able to make his appointment. I told him to call and reschedule. He called and the person told him that since it was less than 24 hours, they would charge him $45 cancellation fee. He did not reschedule. He told me what was told to him and I called to speak to the person he had just spoke to and she told me that she explained their cancellation policy to me on the phone on Saturday. SHE WAS NOT TELLING THE TRUTH!! She did not tell me anything about a cancellation policy. She continued to say she did tell me when she didn't. I cannot do business with a business that has poor customer service practices. I will NEVER do business with them again. And I will tell all my friends and family members about this. read more

This place was incredible. It is very clean with a warm atmosphere. The lady at the front desk, Karen, is incredibly sweet, funny, and a little quirky (my kinda lady)! She saw that I was allergic to lavender lotion, and she took the time to remove items that even smelled like lavender from the room prior to the start of my massage, without me asking for this service. My masseuse was Matt - it was hands down the best massage I have ever received. I told him I was having pain in my back, and his pressure was spot on. It seems like he will be as chatty as you'd like. There were moments of silence when I wanted to just relax, but when I would speak up he was a great conversationalist and contributed the perfect amount. I am often disappointed in therapists who spend a great deal of time up top and too little time on legs, but Matt spent the optimum amount of time on every inch! I really wanted to love this place. It's conveniently located for me and the prices are reasonable. Every person I talked to was very polite, the massage therapists listen to you very carefully, and the receptionist was professional and prompt. The service was mostly stellar. The atmosphere is really nice and relaxing. However, I was not pleased with the actual massage. I went once in October and was not happy with the massage. I wrote an email explaining that I was not happy, so they gave me a free upgrade to come back and try again. I did try again this week and I was again not pleased with the massage. Their massage therapists must be trained to do things a different way than most massages I've experienced. I felt that we spent extra time discussing what I did and did not like the second time around to make sure that there wasn't another unpleasant experience, and again it wasn't very good. I have gotten a lot of massages, I know what I like and I thought I knew how to communicate what I want, but somehow there was still quite a large disconnect between what I expected and what I actually experienced. My usual massage experience goes like this: during the massage I wish it would never end and after the massage, I'm floating on air. Both times at Elements, during, I couldn't wait for it to be over and both times after, I swore I'd never go back. During the actual massage, there isn't a lot of rubbing your muscles. There are a lot of pressure point type activities - where for 15 to 20 minutes at a time the massage therapist has merely one finger touching your body. I thought that there could have been better usage of time - working two areas at the same time, or combining "fixes" and "corrective" activities with pleasurable activities at the same time or interspersed throughout. The massage should primarily feel good, and secondarily fix/correct problems (knots, trouble spots, etc). I know a spa is a rare treat for some people so I felt obligated to say not to take a chance on this place. If you're like me and you only treat yourself to a massage once in a blue moon, you'll feel very disappointed that you spent your splurge at this location. read more

My husband and I came here for his 30th birthday last weekend for the first time. I chose this place because of the reasonable prices, but you definitely get what you pay for. We arrived fifteen minutes early for our 1 pm appointments and we were not called back into the rooms until about 1:05 pm. When I put my clothes back on after the massage was over, it was 1:56 pm. My husband actually beat me to the front desk (he was in a separate room). That means we did not get our full 55 minute massage. I'm not sure if this was coming from within Elements or a venue next door, but for the ENTIRE massage I could hear women cackling, gossiping, and banging items against the wall. The walls are super thin and you can hear everything. My massage therapist even stopped during my massage to try to turn the volume of the music up, but it did not help. The massage itself left much to be desired. After the masseuse dimmed the lights and told me he was beginning the massage, he sat behind the table (behind my head) for what seemed like a good five minutes without moving or touching me. I'm not sure if he was meditating or praying before the massage, but it was odd and he was cutting into my massage time. He asked me if I wanted my face massaged and I agreed. But it wasn't really a massage. He just pressed his fingers down on certain parts of my face. If I would have known that was a face massage, I would have skipped that because he spent a long time doing that. There were some things he would do on the right side of my body that he would forget to repeat on the left side of my body. I was really upset because he rubbed the right side of my scalp and forgot to rub the left side! (This mattered because I had a headache that was making the left side of my head throb). The pressure wasn't that great and he never asked me if the pressure was okay with me. It felt great when he massaged my legs, but he only spent what seemed like seconds on them so I couldn't enjoy that as much. In the end, I felt like my massage was so subpar and short. My husband said his massage was also very mediocre, although he didn't go into great detail. We have had several massages and he usually tells me if the massage was amazing. Next time we will try a nicer, more spa-like place. read more

I recently enjoyed a most incredible massage at Elements given by the highly skilled master therapist Cheryl. I develop numerous knots in my back and shoulders and Cheryl is able to work them out slowly and gently without the normal accompanying pain and discomfort. The heated massage bed is a real plus. I cringe every time I decide to try a new one, but I do so as to experiment with different modalities. I definitively have my favorites though--Jake is exceptional and has the best hands in the business--just tell him what you want, he'll delivered. Ms. Deborah is the Queen of hotstones--she can melt your muscles. Nancy' technique is awesome and so is Stephanie's. I wanted to go a couple of times before contributing a review, and today was my second time there. I have been to other massage establishments, and I consider my experience pretty well-rounded. I've found Elements in Crofton to be impeccably clean, tastefully decorated, and as quiet as a spa environment should be. Occasionally, you can hear low voices from other treatment rooms (emphasis on 'low', as in, it was so quiet I certainly couldn't make out words, just that it was the low murmur of two people talking *briefly*), but I've never found it to be anything that's intruded on my serenity and the peacefulness of my session. Both times I have seen Terrance. He's listened to me, understood my needs and requests, and stuck to them. He doesn't talk during sessions, at least I haven't really tried to be chatty -- I like to relax and just not think, and talking, IMHO, is counterproductive to that. I've never been pushed towards a membership, and booking my appointments was simple and straight-forward both times. Making a connection with a massage therapist is much like working with a personal trainer, maybe even your primary care doctor. You want to find someone whose professionalism is respectable, trustworthy, and makes you comfortable. Everyone's style is different and sometimes, the massage therapist you see that day just isn't the massage therapist for you. It's not always a matter of their skill - sometimes it's just not a good fit. I'm glad I gave the negative reviews I read here a grain of salt before going in for my first session, because my experiences have been nothing short of great. I have enjoyed Terrance's approach, technique, and ability to get my tight shoulders and back to finally release and relax. My suggestion is to go a few times, try a few different massage therapists, then make your decision. That said, I recommend Terrance. He's got a great touch, and I will be returning regularly for that. read more

I had an hour long deep tissue massage by Terry. He was the best masseur I have ever had! He knew exactly what to do and did an amazing job. He worked out all my knots in my back and released a lot of tight muscles in my back and neck. He applied the perfect amount of pressure and provided a great professional relaxing experience. I really like this place. I think some of the people in the other reviews went to elements thinking they were going to have an experience like at Robert Andrews but it's not. It's a place to go where they can holistically help you get better not really an ornate experience. (don't get me wrong, I love a good spa day). I had Bill and he was great. He gave me stretches as "homework" to do to help me loosen up in between my sessions (I had the once a month package). He gave me good tips to relax through out my day and I truly did feel better after being with elements for 4 months. Their massage tables are heated and you get a york peppermint patty each time! Plus water (which is standard). I would go back for sure. It was either this monthly fee or the gym. But eventually I would like to go back to my monthly massages. read more

It was my first time there, so I was expecting to pay the new client rate that was listed on their website for $89. After a perfectly good 1.5 hour massage with massage therapist Matt, the front desk attendant informs me that, not only did their prices increase "this month", I don't get the new client rate, even though I'm a new client, because I was paying with a Spa Week gift card.
