omg! what a mess. before getting your floors done with this contractor, learn a little about chatter marks! I have them all over the floor. these are parallel lines of wave caused by a bad sander. Not only that, their refinishing job with the Poly is terrible. I see dirt and all kinds of imperfections under the final coat. This company claims to repair hardwood floors. They sent out an assessor who arrived at my house 15 minutes late, smelled awful, took no measurements, and just took a couple of close up photos with his phone. He promised me an estimate the next day, but could offer nothing close to an estimate at my house, despite him telling me he had been in the business for 15 years. The next day, they informed me they would not bid on the project because "they did not think they could do it up to their standards" - in other words, they thought I should pay more money to replace the entire floor (which I was prepared to do worst case scenario) but could offer me no price estimate on doing so! This company has a fancy website to lure customers in - don't waste your time. Find a smaller trusted company who is more experienced with hardwood floor repair in DC. read more

They are a good company that does prep work before performing the job, were timely and did a good clean up.

If I could give them zero stars, I would. They are incompetent and had to do our floors over twice. Instead of fixing their mistakes, they made them worse. We are now in the process of taking them through an administrative law proceeding in Maryland, which is cumbersome, but necessary, given the fact that the floors are so bad that they have to be redone AGAIN. Their sales staff are fairly slick, but once you hand them some money, it's a different story and all of the comments here about their unresponsiveness and their nasty attitude reflect our experience as well. I may edit this later and if yelp allows photos, I will try to post. They did a job that was laughingly bad. Take my advice and go somewhere else - anywhere. read more

Very dissatisfied with the service provided at Elegant Floors. The actual quality of the work is only satisfactory. Many of my expectations have not been met. After 2 months the work is still incomplete. Communication with the customer is poor or non-existent. Beginning with poorly written estimates, non English speaking labor, general confusion about what is to be done and management that fails to follow up on quality or satisfaction. I have called, written and spoken to Steve White the owner numerous times. Most all my emails, letters, messages and promises are ignored with out reply. Weekly and daily now for 60 days I have had to constantly remind him of the unfinished project. Elegant Floors is eager to start work offering discounts to begin but beware they may have no intention to finish as promised. I would never wish my awful experience on anyone. Elegant Floors was the least expensive of my bids and now I regret it. I am now 4 years later redoing my kitchen and the sloppy and unfinished floors under the range which was discussed and under the dishwasher also discussed (and for which I paid for the floor) was not done. I have called them four times and each time been told someone would call me back - all I want is to match the floor, buy the wood, and have my contractor install. They can't be bothered to call me back. This company also had to come out two additional times to replace damaged and improperly installed floor boards. Responsive when I first called, professional when came out for measurements, patience with my condo board, excellent and polite workers who did the install. Nightmare all around. They sub out their work even though the website said they don't. They couldn't even tell us who was out at our house the first day. A guy showed up who didn't know what he was supposed to do and was wearing a different flooring companies shirt. I had to walk him around to show him what needed to be done. The floor installation was ok but we had to part ways after the sanding and staining. This was a very poor job with limited supervision at best. The stain was totally uneven and splotchy. When we had issues the owner didn't want to hear it and told my wife literally "no flooring company will please you". When I questioned him on particular things that were issues, he agreed that there were problems but his attitude was simply, get over it and deal with the poor workmanship. The work crew set our HVAC down to 51 degrees and left it overnight, we came back to a pool of water in the basement and a non functioning system because of it. We had to get the place repainted due to stain being waist high or above all through the work area. I understand repainting the moldings and baseboard but waist high?? Stain all over door handles and light switches and plates, 7-8 oil spots left on our driveway from their leaking vehicle. Our stairs were gouged and almost ruined (still don't look right after the new flooring company tried to repair them). When the new flooring company came through, they sanded down the shoddy work and refinished it. The lead contractor actually showed up every morning to give instructions and every evening to inspect the work. The difference in results was night and day. Maybe with a different crew you would have better luck here. read more

I cannot begin to tell you how pleased I am with Elegant's services. They came to my home the week before Thanksgiving 2013, with a promise to have the floors refinished in time for turkey. Mariano was the crew chief. The crew moved all the furniture, while the other companies I contacted told me that would be my responsibility. (Get a rental truck, they said.) Of course, I paid Elegant to do it, according to our contract, but hey, it was well worth the price. The crew refinished the floors in eight rooms, and a hallway. Don't waste your time with this company, working with them was dreadful from the start. When they scheduled to do the work at 8am and I took off work to meet them at my home and they didn't bother to call until 9:30am to tell us they wouldn't be starting the work that day after all we should have taken that as a sign to look elsewhere. We were told another project ran over so they had to delay the start of refinishing our floors, they have no respect for their customers time, if they did they would have called the night before so I didn't miss a day of work for nothing. Our floor refinishing was done in two phases and the same thing happened when they tried to begin work on the second phase as well and everything got pushed back. That was the least of the problems though. They were pretty careless when doing the work. We had our floors refinished in a very dark color and they got the stain all over our newly painted walls. They got the stain all over the molding they put down and everything had to be repainted through our home. After all that we still didn't complain and let things go. However, a few months after they finished the work we saw major differences in the flooring. One story of our home was done in phase 1 by a different crew who did phase 2. The phase 1 flooring was easily scratched up to the extent where you didn't even feel comfortable walking on it. After just a couple months the floor looked like complete crap, like we hadn't even had it refinished. What type of flooring can you not even walk on without leaving marks? Then these awful white marks started developing all over the floor. In every room on the first story the floor is developing these terrible spots everywhere. We finally figured it was best to contact them about the problems since we weren't having these issues on the other story of our home completed by a different crew and we were caring for them the same. So we emailed Evan and Steve and sent photos. This was Steve's response: The damage in your photo is severe. I won't speculate on the cause but it's clear the floor hasn't been properly protected. This is not something we or any flooring contractor would consider for any kind of warranty service. Protect your floors - they're not indestructible. I've attached our care instructions. At this stage, the floor likely needs to be sanded and refinished again. So my wife called him to discuss the matter over the phone. I told him it didn't make sense that the floors were wearing differently and clearly we weren't doing anything that would cause these huge white spots and marks to appear everywhere. We have 3 bedrooms on the floor of our home having the issues and we only use one of them. The spots are appearing in a bedroom that isn't even used?! He basically called my wife a liar over the phone. I had expected better customer service. I expected it wouldn't take much time out of their day to actually visit the home to see if there was in fact a problem. Instead they just went right into saying we'd need to redo our floors again after less than 6 months. WE HAVE NO DOGS, NO CHILDREN, FURNITURE PADS UNDER EVERYTHING and WEAR SOCKS NOT SHOES AROUND OUR HOUSE and their work didn't even last 6 months?! Sorry but you should be able to walk on your floors without risk of damaging them with every step. They work is terrible and their customer service is even worse. We used Elegant Floor Services in late April of 2014 and were very pleased with the service. Francisco and Ernesto were the names of the two gentlemen who came and did the work. Both Francisco and Ernesto were extremely professional, efficient, detail-oriented and skilled. We had refinished our floors 2 years ago and the work done on them had so many imperfections, from scratches, dents, uneven, dark spots, you name it. But now, our floors look fantastic, they also picked up the base board and only charged me for the labor to install, they matched the shoe molding to the stain of the floors. The punchout was executed perfectly. Because of the great work by Ernesto and Francisco we would definitely use Elegant Floor Services again and recommend them to our friends and family. read more

This is the worse contractor I have ever used. They refinished my floors and used the worst "commercial grade" poly apparently. Everything is now soaking directly into the wood. When I complained, the owner told me that it was my fault for not cleaning up spills immediately and using the wrong floor cleaner. The flooring has been in the house for 15 years and had been refinished before without any issue. I have cared for the floors in exactly the same manner without any issue. He was incredibly rude and unprofessional and I made him leave. They used a subcontractor and didn't even bother to check their work. He refused to make any fixes or even an apology for my displeasure. I would stay for away from this company and there shoddy, unprofessional, borderline fraudulent work. read more

After reading several positive reviews of this company on YELP, i called them for an estimate. Their estimate was less than 2 others I received and that should have been my first RED FLAG. Communication with the main office was difficult. Calls and e-mails were not returned once I had given my deposit. The initial floor was installed and I had no complaints. However, when they had to return to sand and stain, there were issues. The crew arrived without the needed materials and had to stop the job and wait until the following day to complete the job. The workmanship was sloppy and they did things without asking my opinion. I was really excited when purchasing a condo in December to make one big purchase initially in having the floors refinished. Elegant Floors came recommended to me by my Realtor (she has since agreed not to recommend them to others). Cutting to the chase, I would recommend to anyone considering using them in the future to check the fine print of the proposal they send. At the bottom of it, they mention that they are not responsible for touch-up work for when they get stain on the walls/baseboards. Oh and they will. There were stains on my newly painted white baseboards in the living room, bedroom, and door jams. I called the company and set emails and didn't hear back for a week! (Wish that I had noticed the other reviews on here about poor customer service). I finally got to talk to the owner and he explained the policy to me. I told him he should change it but he said he wouldn't. The baseboards were not the only poor workmanship, unfortunately. I didn't love the floors and a few friends have come over and thought they looked pretty warped and messy. A friend of a friend came over recently and looked at them as he previously worked in the flooring business. His belief was that they didn't do a proper job of sanding the floors and that is why the stain is uneven in parts. I also have noticed in the two months since that they easily scratch up. I wish I hadn't paid for the extra protection package they offered. I plan to have the floors done again likely in a year (trying to hold out as long as I can) but I definitely won't be using Elegant Floors again there are plenty of other good companies to use. read more

EFS was the second company I contacted for repair and refinishing of my hardwood floors. The floors of the house I had just purchased had been damaged (stained) by a pet, probably decades ago. My wife and I thought that a good approach would be to sand and finish the wood darker in the places that had been damaged, and therefore have a 2-tone finish. The first company went along with that plan. The Sales rep for EFS advised against that and probably saved us from making a big mistake. Their quote was considerably higher than the first company, but it was worth paying more for better service and work. The crew foreman was punctual, highly skilled and helpful. They pulled out the stained wood and replaced it, and repaired several flaws in the floors from the last (apparently amateur) job that was done on them. The end result is that I love looking at my floors now. They are a highlight of the house, and it is definitely worth paying a little more to get the job done right. read more

We hired Elegant Floor Services since we had used them on a previous job. I didn't want to go through the hassle of find another service provider after a good experience before. Elegant Floors did a great job on the hardwood floors but our freshly painted baseboards and refurbished plaster walls paid the price. I made it very clear to Elegant Floors that our baseboards were freshly painted and to be extremely careful and they weren't. It seemed as if Elegant Floor Services took no effort to be extra careful and slopped stain on our baseboards and scuffed them. We informed Elegant Floor Services of this issue and they did send an individual out to repaint our baseboards. This individual only repainted the scuff marks and failed to repaint over the stain. Eventually, I grew tired of waiting on Elegant Floor Services to correct this and did it myself over the weekend. The plaster wall had been chipped in two different places and Elegant Floor Services attempted to repair the wall only making it worse. On the bright-side, Elegant Floors did pay for the plaster wall repair and compensated me an entire $100 for all of the frustration they caused my wife and I. Our frustration with Elegant Floor Services and the complete disregard for our requests has caused me to give them a 2/5. Also, I swear the upstairs floors they re-finished for us is a completely different stain than our main floor but Elegant Floor Services didn't seem to care much about that complaint. read more

Had them in to do some of the wood floors on our main level. The salesman (Cliff) came in and had a good estimate, We had them in and they did a decent job. So we called them when we wanted to floor more of our main floor, Cliff told us they wouldn't be able to match the color exactly but it would be close. When they came in to install they showed me a patch away from the other wood and asked if it was ok. Since I couldn't compare I said I guess so. Well the worker had a completely different color. Cliff hadn't even told them what type of stain was used on the first job. When we called the office they assured us it would dry to the same color. It didn't. The manager went from saying that it was the same color, to saying that it was our fault since I thought it was the same. After weeks of complaining they finally came in and refinished the floors begrudingly. Their fault since we will be doing more areas of our house and they won't get our business!! read more

I had quick and excellent service from Elegant Floor Services. I replaced my dining room floor with hardwoods. They brought me several options to choose from and installed the floor in one day. My husband, who is in a wheelchair, watched them work throughout the day and they were very patient with him. The job was done quickly and professionally and cleaned up behind themselves. I'm terribly regretful that I ever hired Elegant Floor Services for wood floor refinishing. I WILL NEVER HIRE THEM AGAIN!! They did horrific work and the owner was beyond rude to deal with. They came out to fix their 1st round of very bad work, and botched it up even worse, not to mention the huge inconvenience of having it re-done multiple times. Correcting Elegant Floor's errors meant hiring another company for extremely specialized repair thanks to Elegant's sub-par quality. The installation team (Francisco and his team) was very hard-working and reliable, even addressing a problem they pointed out with the level of flooring and existing tile. The floors look great. However, a few days following installation we heard a distinct cracking sound in a few spots when we stepped on them. We called Elegant Floors to ask what it might be and Steve White, president and owner, said he would come our to take a look. He did come and listened to the noise and said he would have someone contact us to determine if there was something that needed to be fixed. We waited a few days but no one contacted us. Called Steve and finally spoke to him after several calls. He was surprised that no one had called and said he would look into the matter It has been over 2 months now and despite several calls and a visit (no one in the office) no one has contacted us. Our impression is that now that they have our money, they don't care about our situation. We doubt that they would give Congressional Country Club this lack of response. Would we recommend them? I cannot be strenuous enough in my recommendation not to use Elegant. They performed some of the work for which I had hired them. But then they charged my credit card without my authorization for the ENTIRE AMOUNT of the contract, including for work they had not yet performed. I contacted them immediately and figured they would just explain that it was a mistake and reverse the charge. Rather than admitting a mistake, they stuck by the charge and said it was their practice to charge credit cards without authorization. Baffled, I reiterated my request that they reverse the unauthorized charge. But a month after I initially brought the issue to their attention, the charge remains on my credit card and my emails have gone ignored. At no time have they claimed they had my authorization or that the work was complete. If working with a company with integrity with honest and responsive employees, look elsewhere. read more

I was also using Elegant Floors after a successful installation of hardwood floors. Cliff again came to the house, but was about 45 minutes late. We told him what we wanted (matching hardwoods), but he didn't write down anything we said. He said since we used their company before, it was all "on file". He took the measurements, left, and a day or so later we received an estimate of the cost. We received several calls to set up our appointment. When the crew came out, they installed the wood in the wrong direction (like in the other review), then ripped it all out. Then they stained the floor the wrong stain color. They wiped a bit in the middle of the floor and asked us how it looked. We figured since they had our info on file, it was at least the color we requested. No, it wasn't and no one asked us what color the other floors were. OY! They are not standing behind their work, not correcting their mistakes. Stay away! Find a reputable company- one that cares about its customers. read more

I work for a very high end home here in dc. We had used elegant floor in the past so we decided to use them again because of the familiarity of our home. We ended up having a few issues. 1) the poor quality they provided to protect our floor molding. We ended up with stain around most of our floor molding in every room they did. Using the excuse read the contract some minor damage will be at our cost (Agreeable). But not when it not minor and its in every room and across the floor boards. I took picture to show them what was done and how bad the tape job they did. It got to the point to where they hired a subcontractor to come in and finish the job. In fact the subcontractor said to us that they are the one that come out when elegant floors don't want to fix, finish or have don't a bad job. In which I can say the subcontractor did a much better job left very minimal damage. I show them they picture and showed them what they did any they also said that it was a bad job they did and it could of been done better especially for who the company is. 2) I spoke with the owner who expect to get paid even though he still hasn't sent out anyone to fix it. The bad part is that he has not even come out to see how bad of a job his guys did taping and protecting our floor molding. Beside saying explain to me why there was stain on the wall before. According to my knowledge there was none there before. but shows me a picture that he sent me a week later after his guy had not come back. Enough of my ranting. I would advise to really shop around there quality of work is not great especially when they keep having to send subcontractor to fix there work. This show that Just because you have a big name doesn't mean you do a good job anymore. We still have the rest of our house to do. I contacted Elegant Floors this summer to install a new laminate wood floor on one level of our home. While the owner, Steve, I believe, was very knowledgable and prompt with his appointment, that's where my satisfaction stopped. I wanted the laminate flooring to match the solid oak hardwood we have throughout the rest of the house. He sent me a few websites, and said to look at the colors provided on said sites. I asked if it would be possible to see laminate samples from the brands he recommended. He said he did not have samples in stock, but he would order them for me and it should take approximately one week. I called after a week, they were not in, I called after two weeks, they still weren't in, I called again the third week and the samples were still not available. I found it odd that a flooring company did not come prepared with or could not procure samples. After waiting for three straight weeks with no response from the company (I called them every time looking for the samples), I decided to call other flooring companies in the area. I called AZ Hardwood Floor, the owner was out the same day with samples and provided a quote about $200 cheaper than Elegant Floor Services and my floors were done that week. read more

I too had and am still having a terrible experience with Elegant Floor Services. We had our floors done over the Summer. The floor looked great when the job was finished, even though there was some residual stain on our floor boards that went uncorrected, they also dripped some seal on our carpet that still remains. We didn't want to complain so we let it go. 4 months later a discoloration appeared right near our refrigerator. We made an appointment with Evan, the owners son, to look at it but they never showed. When we called we spoke to the owner Steve and he claimed we never had an appointment. Steve agreed to come out the next day, and when he did he blamed us for the damage. He said he would come back and try to fix it but he never returned. We called 2 weeks later and asked why he did not come out and Evan said they would come out the next day. And of course, no one showed. When we called Evan said Steve was looking for us and wanted to talk to us and would call us back, he never did. I called the next day and spoke to Steve, he again claimed I never had an appointment with them. He was rude, combative and accusatory in our discussion and only when I threaded to call American Express and put in a dispute claim did he agree to come and try to fix it. He was supposed to come at 8:30 am today, and guess what? He did not show. We called and Evan said they would come tomorrow. I am not holding my breathe, but I have put in a dispute with American Express and hopefully this will be resolved. DON"T USE ELEGANT FLOORS!!!!!!!!! read more
