The Problem: Car was having trouble starting, Battery was 100%, Starter was good, Alternator was good. 2 independent professional mechanics checked it, scanned it, both couldn't figure it out and were at a loss at how to repair it. One thought it may be an electrical issue and if it was, Tom at Electro-Tech is the expert on electrical problems. Tom found the problem - circuit from the car radio and amp was continuously drawing power from the battery and emptying it. Fixed the problem. Tom and Eric are the best around! My older Subaru started making horrible loud rattling/growling sounds from the engine area this past Friday. Luckily, I was only a few hundred feet from home and slowly drove right home. Knew it sounded like a very bad noise, so we had the car towed to Electro Tech. Tom and Eric jumped right on checking out this terrible noise first thing on Saturday morning. We had feared the worst, thinking there was engine issues and Tom knew this. He diagnosed our problem in less than an hour - timing belt/tensioner pulley - called us and confirmed the cost and timing of the work. We were back on the road Saturday with a 17 year old car that runs great again and Tom's call that said if anything does not feel right to get right back to him. Best team around! I have been taking my car to Tom at Electro Tech Auto repair for over 10 years and will gladly vouch for the work Tom does at his shop. I have taken both my personal cars and my limo company fleet vehicles to Electro Tech Auto and here is what I do know... Tom knows what he's doing under the hood and he goes the extra steps to discuss the work that needs repairs as well as offer various solutions. He's definitely not pushy nor dishonest, rather he is very honest and upfront so you can make an educated decision on how to proceed with getting the problem fixed. Electro Tech Auto is a small shop, and in my experience this is sometimes better than a larger organization. I like knowing the guy that owns the shop is the one getting his hands dirty to find a solution. We used to use STS on Rt. 1 in Monmouth Jct - right next to Electro-Tech - and when they were bought out recently they lost all integrity. So we needed a new clutch and got towed to STS and when they quoted $2100 we walked over to Electro-Tech to check them out. Tom quoted $950 and did an excellent job. He found other things wrong with our vehicle and talked to us about them and helped us prioritize what was urgent and what could wait. He discussed fees up front and if anything changed he'd call to discuss and get our OK first. We found him to be very honest and extremely knowledgeable - he is also an electrical engineer and is able to explain in as much depth as you are interested. He owns the shop and answers the phone so you get to deal with the top guy. Eric, his assistant mechanic, is also friendly and helpful. Highly recommend! read more

I was very in satisfied with the service at the auto shop. My car broke down so we took it to the nearest auto shop and we got it checked out. The employee saw that we didn't know much about cars so he charged us $540 for a simple cable change. Upon further research I learned that the cable only costs $30 max while he charged us $300. On top of that he charged us 2 hours of labor while it was no more than 15 min. The bottom line is that he saw two women who he presumed had no background knowledge about cars, and he took advantage of us. read more

About me: -I always shop around for the best price -I am very paranoid of mechanics -I always google and research every little thing I am told by a mechanic before I authorize repairs. I changed jobs in May of 2014, so I wanted to find a new mechanic close to my job. After a quick search I located Electro Tech, and there is where I met Tom. I had a 2004 Saturn Ion. For those of you not aware, the Ion series had a boatload of problems with many of its components, mainly due to poor manufacturing decisions on the part of GM. In February of 2014 I began having issues with my wiper transmission/linkage. I went to two separate mechanics who both told me that it couldn't be fixed and had to be replaced. Being short of cash at that time, I said "screw it" and just didn't get the replacement done. That June, I went into Tom for an unrelated minor repair. (D/C Outlet wasn't working). He explained that the charger I was using was cheap and that it had fried the circuits. He fixed it no problem, and even gave me a D/C charger he had laying around for free. While I was there I asked about the wiper transmission, explaining what the other two mechanics had told me. Later that day I get a call, and lo and behold he tells me it's fixed. I was blown away. When I went into pick it up I asked him flat out "Do you think those other mechanics were lying to me or was it simply incompetence?". He explained to me that many auto technicians have a very basic understanding of vehicle components, and if the basic tests/repairs they are trained to do don't work, they jump very quickly to replacement. He told me that on the other hand, he has a greater understanding of the inner workings of each part, and that allows him better knowledge with which to do repairs. Zoom ahead to May of this year. My brakes are squealing and my car is running loud. Turns out my brakes/rotors are shot and there is a giant hole in my exhaust system. Tom ends up doing a brake/rotor replacement, a full exhaust system replacement, and an engine belt replacement(I had *never* done this, 120,000 miles at the time) for under $1,000. Where I'm from, that's a pretty damn reasonable price for that list. When I get in to pick it up he shows me the exhaust system so I can see the hole and understand why I needed a replacement instead of a repair. I drive out, and the car is running like a dream again! Just two months later, I drove through a construction zone with a *very* highly elevated manhole. I hit it driving over, and it shreds my O2 sensors, punches a hole in the new exhaust system, and destroys my catalytic converter. Just really bad luck on my part. Tom gives me the pricing for everything. While reasonable, it's more than I'm willing to spend on a decade old vehicle, and I end up buying a new Toyota Camry. With the maintenance included, I unfortunately won't be seeing Tom for a couple of years! To sum up: (Sorry this ran long!) -Tom is incredibly knowledgeable. It's obvious that his electrical engineering degree gives him a greater understanding of cars than your run-of-the-mill auto mechanic. -Tom is a great communicator. As someone with no knowledge of vehicles, he always explains things very well so that I understand exactly what is wrong, and how he's going to fix it. -Prices are very reasonable. Every single time Tom has given me repair details and a quote, I have googled it against fair repair costs in NJ, and his number has always been lower. -Tom has always been honest with me. Right from the start he understood that I was trying to prolong the life of an old vehicle, and he explained that he would do his absolute best to keep repair costs down so that it was still worth it for me to keep the car. Whenever he tells me something along the lines of "I'm going to do X to diagnose/fix it, it will take between 1-2 hours" he has almost always been at the lower end of that estimated range. -I can't speak to other reviewers experience, but seeing his current Yelp ratings literally compelled me to create an account just to review him. -While I'll be stuck going to Toyota's mechanics for the next couple of years, as soon as I'm able to I'm sure I'll be taking my car straight back to him. read more

Poor service and over charged!!! I was traveling by and my car broke down in front of this auto shop. I took my car in to get it checked up, he said he will take a look at it and it will be fixed in an hour. Within that hour he was working on 4-5 different car and charged me for whole hour. After my hour was done he said he needs more time to figure out what is wrong with the car and charged me for one more hour and still didn't fix the problem in my car. read more

Being new to the area, I needed a mechanic. I did extensive research and after seeing all the great reviews and speaking with Tom on the phone, I was sold. I'm so glad I found these guys. They are good, honest mechanics and they really get to know your car. I took my Toyota in to have the horn fixed and just a general inspection. Turns out I needed new motor mounts, which they fixed. A few months later I call up for some other issues I began having, he remembered me and my vehicle. I got my car in right away and they changed out my front brake pads, rotors, and calipers quick and for a good price. He even called me a few days later to see if everything was good with the brakes. He truly cares about your business and is in it for the long haul. I can't recommend them enough. They have good quality parts right there in his warehouse. Talk about convenient. I brought my truck into Electro-Tech because of a check engine light, expecting to pay a fortune to have it fixed. Tom showed me that it was just a simple problem with a vaccuum hose.
