Amazing doctor, genuinely caring, and incredibly helpful--highly recommended to all!!!!

Save yourself the time & trouble and avoid going to this doctor, particularly if you are seeking a family doctor. Incredibly rude and unprofessional. With so many astute & sincerely caring doctors in the area, do not settle for this option for your family's medical care. Similar to another post - I wish I had read some of the other reviews before making an appointment with her. I would urge others to not make that mistake, and read the negative reviews. They are very accurate. read more

I had Ashby as a PCP a few years ago for about a two year period. While I thought she was a somewhat competent physician, her mannerisms and personality were completely void of tact. She ordered blood work done with just about every visit, was overzealous with various vaccinations, and had the annoyingly condescending habit of grinning when discussing the potential dangers of Type 2 Diabetes. While I don't doubt Ashby's knowledge of medicine and diagnostic practice, her people skills, a vital part of the doctor-patient dynamic, are horrendous and unacceptable. If you want to feel like a petulant child I would recommend Ashby. If you'd rather be treated with respect with an ounce of dignity go elsewhere, ANYWHERE but Ashby's office. read more

I don't post many Yelp reviews, but felt compelled after reading some of the negative reviews about Dr. Ashby. I started going to her this past year after going onto a new insurance and following issues/mishaps with telehealth, urgent cares, and other providers during Covid. The genetic testing she recommended didn't uncover anything shocking, but did help pinpoint an issue and rule out lots of other concerns. She pointed out which of her recommendations likely wouldn't be covered by insurance and let me make an informed choices about whether I'd want to pay out of pocket (it was a little over ~$100). She's incredibly smart and capable, which as someone commented should be the norm for a doctor, but unfortunately isn't in my experience. She saw issues that other doctors didn't and even if she's not mild-mannered, it doesn't detract from medical care. She's blunt, but it means that I know I can trust her assessments. No complaints here. read more

Can't recommend Dr. Ashby enough. She spends quality time talking through medical history, any of my concerns - I never feel rushed. She takes an invested interest in my health from holistic view. Love that her office, is like a living room. She also is flexible on meeting after 5pm which is great for my work schedule. She is quirky and does things a certain way, if that's not something you can roll with, she is not the doctor for you - I find it endearing and authentic. Glad to have found her. read more

Terrible experience. She makes you feel horrible. Went twice and left depressed. She mistreats you, telling horrible things about your weakness. No word of support. Asked for an absurd amount of exams, even a genetic map, which proved unnecessary and cost me a fortune. Dropped me as a patient for no reason and didn't say anything. Found out when I needed a new prescription. Now I ran out of medication because she refuses to see me. I think that is because I'm Latin. The assistant is even worse. Rude and incompetent. read more

Dr Ashby's is smart, intuitive and an excellent dognostician. No, she doesn't tell you what you want to hear but, rather, what you need to hear. I am in the best shape of my life due to her care over the past 10 years. read more

Just wanted to clarify that when I said she's rude and unprofessional, I did not mean that she is blunt. She has called someone stupid over the phone. This is someone reaching out to her to obtain clarification on a test that was ordered. Surely hope she has changed for the better. read more

I'm so blessed to be cared for by this doctor! She's super smart; masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Standford University, went to medical school at the University of California, has studied holistic medicine, is a resident of surgery, and has done a lot of research for the treatment of breast cancer. She still drives and maintains her own BMW 2002 (was my first car) Most importantly, I love her cheerful demeanor and sense of glam! Worth driving to the East Bay to see her. She saved my life and sanity! read more

Terrible experience from pompous & dismissive bedside manner to questionable clinical assessment skills which resulted in a missed diagnosis and hospitalization. To top it off she refused to cooperate with the hospital with home health care orders, which is a primary MD's responsibility. So much happier with our current primary care doctor! read more

My GP retired and I was referred to her practice. After I cooled my heels in the exam room for 20 minutes, she walked in, didn't say hello, looked me up and down and said "Where do you get off being so tall?" Uh... Me, being a smart ass, and now an pissed off smart ass, said "Maybe you should have used better manners when you got into the height line." (Best I could come up with under the circumstances). So then she was pissed off. The appointment went downhill from there, and I haven't been back, since. She may be a good diagnostician, but if your social skills are that lacking, you probably should be in a research lab. read more

Elaine Ashby is by far the best doctor I have ever had. I saw her last in about 2006 and it is now 2021, and I took the time to find her online just to leave this review. She cared for me when I had a heart attack which I probably would not have survived had she not given me a prescription for blood pressure medication. She is the best! read more

I recently relocated from the East Coast and in the process of establishing doctors, including a general doctor. From some of the reviews (and comments by other local doctors) I have to admit I was a bit skeptical but wanted to see/experience for myself and form my own opinion. Yes, Dr. Ashby takes additional blood baseline tests (and these are not all covered by your insurance even if you have a fab PPO) as she uses Berkely Heart Lab. To avoid misunderstanding of the cost ask the office for paperwork on the actual cost to you as she has arranged "special" pricing with BHL.My out-of-pocket cost for this was $159. That said, these baseline tests were AMAZING insight as to what is really going on with you and your risks based on testing your blood. Based on my family background of heart disease, thyroid, diabetes, and cancer (all kinds) I am very aware of my diet (and yes I splurge) and general lifestyle, so for me I liked the idea of really testing everything possible to know what is going on, what my possible risk factors are and what I could do to prevent things if at all possible. After my tests I learned some great (and things I am not at risk for like Alzheimer's or a heart attack in my 40's) and some so-so. But those so-so areas are things I can try to change by vitamins, diet, etc..... I learned that based on my gene mix that a low-fat diet is NOT good for me and I need 33% of my calories from fat (which apparently is unusual). Anyway, I am going to try adding the few tweaks she mentioned and then test again to see if my baseline has changed. If it has, then ya' know what it's working and if not than I can reconsider. But hell it's worth a shot. If you don't really want to know or when you know take steps at preventatives then perhaps Dr. Ashby is not for you. But if you do...she is work experiencing yourself. read more

I get extremely nervous before examinations and would be completely disappointed if Dr. Ashby walked into the examination room without making a wise crack. It calms me down. How refreshing, an MD who's human. Unlike other doctors, she takes time to really care and listen. You can ask or tell her anything. To the patient below, I pay her to tell me when something I think is normal is not normal. She knows a bit better than me because she's a physician. I am not offended if she tells me I need exercise or to lay off the cheese. She's straight talking - she doesn't sugar coat it. My only frustration is with the administrative staff. They can be slightly overly assertive on the phone, interrupt when I'm speaking, make it tough to make an appointment, and occasionally screw up billing. It would also be nice if records were computerized and if I could get an e-mail reminder to make an appointment for my next physical like I do with my dentist. Just a suggestion. read more

Dr Ashby has moved. She has been trying to get Yelp to change her address... with no luck. Here it is... 925 Village Center Suite 6, Lafayette, CA 94549 - phone number and fax have not changed! Like everyone else, I love Dr A! read more

Dr. Ashby is awesome! She has been my physician for many years, and even though I live in Eugene OR part of the time, I still arrange for all of my Doctor's appointments with Dr. Ashby. She has the coolest sense of humor, great taste in shoes, and works with you to create a plan for your health, including diet, exercise and mental well being. You can tell her anything. She will laugh with you, and then get down to business. AND she's a surgeon. She gets a gleam in her eye if you need to have a surgical procedure she can handle. read more

I don't typically make yelp reviews but feel that I need to make one regarding this doctor. I just went to Dr. Ashby for a consultation and had a terrible experience. She was incredibly rude, and some of the things she said were plain cruel. It was probably the worst doctor experience I've ever had and I would not recommend her to anyone. read more

I found this doctor to be incredibly rude and unprofessional. I cannot recommend her to anyone seeking healthcare. I wish I had read some of the other reviews before making an appointment with her. Dr. Ashby and her office are my health partner, and advocates. I suffered a heart attack at 40, and Dr. Ashby took me in and helped me create a comprehensive health plan that has me in the best shape of my life. She is brilliant, and very in tune with the latest health trends and research. Her office is available, accessible, and flexes to meet my needs. Andrea, the office manager is amazing and will do whatever she can to get me in to see Dr. Ashby on very short notice. Overall, I can't imagine where I would be without Dr. Ashby and her office - and now I'm looking forward to the next 40 years being the happiest and healthiest yet. read more

I had heard "decent" reviews about Dr. Elaine Ashby and decide because her office was very close to my place of work that it would be worth a shot despite the fact that my friend who has visted Dr. Ashby said that she was very pushy about getting unnecessary vaccinations. I called in to see if she was taking new patients, after waiting two weeks, I called into follow up with my inquiry only to get a sarcastic response. "Ohh, yeeah wellll you didn't receive a call because were not accepting new patients." OK, well thanks for giving me the comon courtsey of calling me back and letting me know this. I can only imagine how it would have been dealing with this office if I were actually a patient. Note to File: Call people back, it's good business practice. Even if you won't be able to help them. read more

I dropped my girlfriend off at this establishment for a routine check up; she had not been sick for well over a year. First off, the physician's office is a glorified trailer off of Mt. Diablo Blvd. Since she was allegedly a part of the John Muir Physician's Network, I decided to look past the initial curb appeal of the sub par office. However, not even a mere 24 hours later, my girlfriend began feeling very ill after the doctor/nurse practitioner swayed her into receiving the H1N1 vaccine despite my girlfriend's negative feelings toward it. When I called the front office to confront them regarding her illness, they merely said to make another appointment (i.e. pay an additional copay and forgo my girlfriend's second of only three yearly doctor visit allotments.) It seems apparent yet another so called "family physician" cares only about the steady stream of insurance driven revenue instead of standing up for the quality of care they provide to their patients. Needless to say, my girlfriend and I are searching for a friendlier, healthier physician. read more

I've known Dr. Ashby for years and I hesitate to wade into physician reviews, but some of the comments made me smile. Dr. Ashby is very smart and cares passionately about her patients, but she does tell it like it is. That might rub some people the wrong way and it does sometimes take a couple of tries to find a physician who is right for you--nothing wrong with that. She might come off as being unprofessional but I can assure you that she takes her practice and her professional duty to her patients very seriously. I personally don't always like large group practices with layers of gatekeepers so I appreciate a solo practitioner but sometimes that means the office might not always function smoothly as office staff come and go. There is no one doctor that is right for everyone, but in my opinion Dr. Ashby is a great doctor. read more

Be very careful with this doctor. She wrote some blood tests for me that in my opinion were not necessary. Those tests cost me $2400. I never got the bill from the lab. Two years later, last month, a debt collector informed me that I have a debt from the lab for the blood test that were ordered by my doctor (Elaine Ashby) two years ago. I ended up paying the full amount couple weeks ago because my lawyer said when I give my blood for test, I am responsible for the expenses. I think she also gave unnecessary medicine to me. I checked with other doctors and they did not think it was necessary for me to take those medicine. In addition, her behavior was condescending each time visited her. She always asked my husband to leave the room, we were not impressed with her manner. I am glad she is not my doctor anymore. I will not go back to her. read more

I have nicknamed Dr. Ashby "Mrs. OZ" (after Dr Oz on the Oprah show). She is excellent. Does lots of preventative recommendations, is very thorough - when is the last time your physical included gene analysis, cardiovascular risk assessment, your own copy of the lab report with recommendations. I have searched for a good medical doctor and glad that I kept looking and didn't lower my standard. Much like Dr. Oz she is into preventative care, she helps you to create a plan for a long healthy life. read more

Let me count the ways in which I LOVE Dr. Ashby and her staff. First off I have always felt like part of a family when I visit her. If your lucky enough to be seen by her your in for a real treat. She actually cares about her patients and takes a serious approach to treating the WHOLE you and not just the symptoms. Her office staff are always nice, attentive, and ready to smile. I honestly feel lucky to be her patient and strive to live a healthier life after every visit. read more

My husband and I went several times. Each time I saw her, she told me how fat my husband was and he needed to lose weight...in a sarcastic tone. Not real professional in my opinion. She used profanity (trying to be hip) which even though I am young, I don't apprecitate hearing the F bomb from my doctor. Call me old fashion. May be a good doctor - but did not appreciate her bedside manner. Moved on to a new doctor read more

She is amazing. Smart as a whip and feisty as hell. She is a true problem solver. Which I feel is the most import quality for a doctor. She wants to find out what's wrong not just give you a band aide for your issues. She really does want what's best for you. I am so lucky to have a doctor like her. read more

I can't personally say whether or not this doctor is great. Unfortunately for me the office isn't taking new patients (1/4/16). I could be added to a waiting list but they also don't accept Cigna. That's seemed to stop them from adding my name. My husband wants me to be added and suggest we pay cash since we can be reimbursed. Not sure what to do since I found Dr. Ashby through a thyroid referral website for doctors that are willing to prescribe natural desiccated thyroid meds. I was looking forward to having a female PC that was open to alternatives from main stream. read more

I am so glad to have Dr. Ashby as my doctor she is honest and sometimes a little out spoken but she is very caring and very up front with you. She is someone who i want to take care of me if there is something wrong she is very thorough and sometimes she is very blunt but she dose care a great deal about her patients and yes sometimes her bed side manner is not what you want she is one of the best doctors i have ever seen and will never choose another one over her... 1) Stop!. You shouldn't look on yelp for a doctor. Go to a website like Vitals.com where you can find if a physician is board certified and in what specialty. 2) Going to someone who trained in surgery for your medical issues is like asking a plumber to do your electrical work. My brother is a surgeon and he goes to someone who actually trained in internal medicine when he gets sick. 3) She prescribed me a particular medicine, despite lab test results that were normal, and if even they had been out of range, another doctor called the medicine outdated and only used as a last-ditch treatment. Which begs the question why do the lab work if you're going to ignore the results. 4) She does bloodwork in-house. So I had to do fasting blood tests at 9:00 am instead of going to Muir lab around the corner at 7:00 am. 5) Her nurse couldn't get blood out of my veins (I've never ever had this problem) so I got stabbed multiple times until I finally walked out 6) Expect to get harangued about taking a multivitamin despite the fact that there is no evidence for it (see the nytimes website) read more

This doctor is unconscionable. Rude rude rude people. I would never accept this as person as a doctor nor should you based on the type of staff she hires. The receptionist at the front desk is one of the rudest individuals you will ever come across. The doctor witnessed her being completely rude and out of line with me and just chuckled. I could not believe it. This woman should not even have a medical license. I wouldn't be surprised if she was some sort of hack Doctor so you should steer clear. You should see the run down shack she works out of. It's awful. Another reviewer called it a "glorified trailer" and that's exactly what it is. After reading all the other negative reviews I couldn't agree with them more. She is just terrible. No one needs someone like this in their life as a supposed care giver. Do yourself a favor and find a more professional doctor. read more

I absolutely LOVE Dr. Ashby. She is a geek in the finest sense of the word. She really knows her stuff, keeps up with the latest in science and tech, and is very to-the-point about things. It is so refreshing. My whole family goes to her and we all love her. read more

Typically, doctors accept new patients on they don't. This office wanted to jot down notes about me and then have the doctor decide whether or not she'd want to take me on as a patient. I feel like this is a bit insulting, especially when they decide that they just don't want to take you on without any reason. Are they only taking patients with no health issues whatsoever? Unclear. On the bright side, they got back to me within a day or two so that I could find someone else. read more

Outstanding. Took the time to really check things out. Was the first doctor in 20 years that knew what was causing my symptoms. I've been seeing Dr. Ashby for almost 15 years now even though her office has moved several times and so have I and never closer to each other. I first saw her because my primary care doc was unavailable and I was in pain with a knee problem. She diagnosed and fixed a problem I had seen Dr. Eric Gracer for a number of times and he could never resolve. Plus she remembered my name and history every time I saw her even if it had been a year since the last time. I have tried to switch doctors to someone closer to me but I keep going back to Dr. Ashby for her unparalleled diagnostic skills and her great sense of humor that lightens the mood appropriately when things are not going great. She is by far the best primary care physician I've had and undoubtedly one of the best in the entire Bay Area. On her way to becoming a Doctor this brilliant woman took the time to also get a Masters in Engineering. I only know this because I saw her degrees on her wall in the office and I asked her about it. She brushed it off joking about a Type A Nerd college life that she had fortunately finally focused on Medicine. All I can say, is the brilliant mind is well placed as a diagnostician. She also does Plastic surgery and I'm guessing her engineering mind serves her well in that arena. All I know is she is a brilliant doctor and your health could not be in better hands. Dr. Ashby is warm, personable and brilliant which is such a rare combination. I highly recommend her. read more

After experiencing so many doctors that frankly didn't seem to give a damn, both my husband and I were thrilled to find Dr. Ashby. She is so thorough and explains things without being condescending and will answer any questions you have the good sense to ask. Leaving Dr. Ashby behind was the only regret we had about leaving the Bay Area. read more

Both my husband and I loved Dr. Ashby. She was the best diagnostician I've had to this day, and I found her off-putting humor to be entertaining. However, she fired my husband and me because I was upset with the lack flexibility the office staff (and Dr. Ashby) displayed after my had a serious episode while traveling internationally. We got a scorching, upsetting and very unprofessional letter from her. You know the kind of letter that only makes the writer 'feel better' by lambasting you? Very sad, because I got good care from her when she and her staff were not mad at me. weird. read more
