I've heard such good things about this place and had to try it out. The food was pretty good. I would go back for the seafood enchiladas. I like that they have combo dishes available to try everything. The churros were delicious but the fried ice cream was a letdown. I thought I was ordering a typical fried ice cream but it really was just a huge tortilla shell with ice cream in the middle. The inside was nicely laid out but seating did not follow Covid safety procedures. People were sat in booths back to back with nothing in between them. I was lucky enough to be in a booth away from others. There were also tons of people in the bar area jumping from group to group and the bartender didn't have a mask on at all. I was very surprised at all of this and probably won't return because of it. read more

El Toro is such a great find in Wilmington! The wait staff was incredibly attentive and made sure that my table had enough chips and salsa at all times. The prices on the menu are great! I ordered the enchiladas verdes, and it ended up being the most expensive dish of my table at only like $11! They have a great selection of authentic street style tacos, as well as burritos of multiple sizes. However, the online menu does not match the in-restaurant menu. Notably, there are no tortas or flautas in the actual menu. El Toro has plenty of seating inside, as well as some great music playing. There is a nice outdoor seating area that I'm sure would be great in the summer. They do have space heaters set up in the winter, so it would be great to dine there on a mild night. Definitely check out El Toro if you're looking for some authentic Mexican food! read more

We finally got around to trying El Toro for dinner on a Thursday night after purchasing a Groupon a while back. It's located on Union Street with an unfortunate lack of parking lot --- we circled around a few times and almost gave up on finding a spot before settling on one a few blocks away. But ultimately, I was glad we stuck with our plan, because we had a really enjoyable dinner. The restaurant was decorated for the holidays, with plenty of Mexican folk art that spices the place up regardless of the season. There's a bar lining one wall, and I heard the waitress mention that they have happy hour until 6 PM. We were seated immediately as the restaurant was about half full. Service was fast and friendly. For drinks, we ordered margaritas (duh). I chose the standard lime, and BF went outside the box and chose peach. Both drinks were initially quite warm when served --- it'd be nice if they were shaken with the ice before they were poured. The lime was good, though nothing spectacular, and the peach was very sweet and quite peachy --- BF was kind of meh about it. The highlight of our meal was the guacamole. We were automatically served chips with salsa (a thin but flavorful salsa), and added on Guac for something like $3.95, but I would pay plenty more. It was buttery and delicious with the perfect amount of salt and lime. For dinner, I ordered the chicken and chorizo fajitas, which came with rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream, guac, and pico. The portion was HUGE... we definitely could have split an order for dinner, but instead, I got to enjoy the second half for lunch the next day. Incredible deal for $13.50. BF got seafood enchiladas doused in cheese sauce; his main comment was: "What's inside is delicious, but there's not much of it." They offer a variety of tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and other traditional Mexican foods --- including specials that offer samplings of multiple different options. I'm looking forward to going back to try their tacos --- and of course to eat more guac! read more

Doordashed some delicious Tacos de Birria tonight! Delicious and authentic. Not spicy at all, which I enjoy. If you want to add some heat, get their red sauce on the side! El Toro is everything a neighborhood Cantina should be; familiar, friendly and serving fresh, flavorful food. The place is warmly inviting; a vintage-style bar tucked in the corner is perfect for enjoying a cool margarita or a craft beer,. Adjacent is a casual dining area decorated with colorful Mexican folk art tchotchkes, as well as patio dining during the summer months. The staff is always welcoming and attentive making you feel at ease... like you're at someone's home for dinner. Most importantly, the food is consistently good. I can attest to consistent because I'm there at least once a week, if not twice. Its simple, fresh ingredients done well. The homemade chips and salsa are a must to take home for snacking, and at a mere $3.50 a bag, what's stopping you? The menu consist of all your basic, authentic Mexican "comfort" foods. Tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas, fajitas, rice 'n beans, all offered in a variety of meats/cheese ... pollo, carne de asada, el pastor, queso. The pork burrito is a meal on its own, stuffed with el pastor, rice 'n beans, lettuce, cheese, salsa, sour cream...just add nap. Taco Tuesdays offers $2 tacos along side $2 beers. Street tacos on a soft corn/flour tortilla (those are the ones topped with diced onion and cilantro) or traditional hard-shelled tacos (topped with shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and queso fresco ). Chicken, beef, pork, or fish. Bring the whole family. Atmosphere and food flavor/presentation are the two biggest factors in the food business. El Toro nails them both. Fantástico! read more

If ya want run of the mill Tex Mex fare, dont come here. It is some of the best Mexican cuisine. Cantina for sure.

Two friends and I went to the gay bar across the street tonight but we ordered one drink and the bartender was such an asshole to us we left immediately and decided to come to El Toro instead. Didn't know what to expect because rolling up into a straight bar/joint can be unnerving, and my one friend was in a kilt and I was wearing a floral cap that said "QUEEN" across the front. Was overwhelmingly surprised to find the two bartenders were fucking AWESOME. My friends got several pitchers of margaritas but I wasn't drinking, and the bartender mixed me up a fruit juice mix on the house when I told him I was the designated driver. He was also hella funny and just like a GOOD bartender. So was his co-bartender, a younger guy who kinda looked like Lou Diamond Phillips. And even though the rest of the patrons were like clearly straight couples and what not, we felt really comfortable just chilling out and having a good night. We all ended up ordering dinner and everything was really tasty. Also the music was bangin'! It was also fun to have some of the people around speaking Spanish and assuming we don't understand it, with two of us being white-'passing' Latinos and the other a black lady. :P Some crazy conversations coming from the people to our left! Would definitely come back here! read more

Decent food but service was awful. Waited almost 40 mins maybe longer to get my food and 30-40 mins to get my check.

1st time here , service was fast, waitress was friendly and food was good . Margaritas need a bit more tequila and the salsa for the chips they serve looks fresh but lack a bit of spice need a little bit more heat. But overall good : ) read more

I live in Philadelphia (graduate hospital) and drive 35 minuets for this and have been for over 15 years. Best Mexican I have ever had. the Chilaquilas with the chicken over the chips is a real treat and my favorite order. I like mine the hottest so no one else in the house takes my left overs!!! I have to remind myself not all entrees come with beans anymore so you have to order a side, and dip some chips in them. I brought my boyfriend for the first time today for take out. We were too excited we had to sit and eat our chicken supreme nachos before we hit the road! read more

Wilmington has a few really great authentic taco shops if you know where to look and this is one of them. Venture out from the standard safe chicken soft-shell taco and you will be amazed. The service is always friendly and even with less than a dozen seats it is worth being cramped to get this food fresh and hot. TIP: The queso (cheese) dip at most mexican places is dreadful, here they use authentic mexican cheeses instead of the processed american garbage and the result is white gold. read more

Finally! A Mexican restaurant that captures the essence of Mexico. I had the carnitas taco. Juicy, delicious carnitas with onions, cilantro and a lime wedge, just the way I've had the street tacos in Mexico! The chile relleno and beans were terrific too. It's a teeny little place. Only 3 tables, but they deliver. I'm so glad this place was suggested to me and I'm SO sure we will be ordering from here all the time! read more

El Toro - Best MEXICAN Food this side of the border - Mexican Near Me - Wilmington, Delaware

Stuck at St. Francis Hospital and sick of hospital food, I needed a fix of Mexican Ordering was very simple; it was very easy to communicate. Delivery was here in the promised time (@ 1 hour) I started with chips and guacamole. They generously sent two bags of chips; careful, guacamole is spicier than most places. I ordered the special combo -- enchiladas, burritos, etcetera. Very tasty. Spicy. Plenty of food for leftovers. I'm a big fan of re-fried beans, so ordered a side order. Huge amount. I couldn't finish in two meals. One star lost for the rice. There was lots of it, but it was dry and lacking flavor. Since I'm still stuck in the hospital, I could see myself ordering from here again. read more

El Toro, where have you been hiding all my life? Seriously the best Mexican restaurant in Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic! Ventured here on the recommendation of a good friend and I'm kind of mad we didn't discover it sooner. Jesse, if you're reading this, why are you holding out on me? Anyway, fantastic food and service. Chimichangas (with beef and fried because I'm a fatty) are my go to whenever I am at a Mexican restaurant. I've had many a chimichanga because like mentioned earlier, I'm a fatty, and the ones here was awesome. My hubs got the carnitas and stated they were the best he ever had. He's a carnitas connoisseur while I'm the chimichanga expert and he also generally does not have strong opinions when it comes to food, so I was surprised when he said this. Then I had a bite of his carnitas, and then another bite, and one more, before he was like, hey get your own, but it was stupendous. We loved this place so much that we went the next week too and I of course got the chimichangas again but shrimp this time. Just as stupendous as the beer, and my hubs carnitas was spot on again. They do something magically with their spice and roasting/frying/how does one make carnitas/well I'll never know because I only plan to eat it here because the meat is juicy, succulent while the outside has a nice charred crisp to it. I'm officially obsessed with this place. Added bonus, the last time we were here on a Friday night, they cleared the tables around 9:45pm and started setting up a dj booths, lights, this place gets bumping post-dinner! Looking forward to eating here more! read more

OMG. Best Mexican I have tasted north of the Mason-Dixon... Admittedly, we passed this place by the first time we were going to go there. If you are looking for a sit-down restaurant, this is not necessarily where you want to go, but believe me IT IS WORTH IT!!! There are only 4 tables, but we've only taken-out, so it doesn't bother me :-D First, the carnitas. Holy melt-in-your-mouth pork. Seasoned great, with the BEST, read BEST mexican rice I have EVER had, and of course refried beans. I have always gotten the corn tortillas which are DELISH! And the hot salsa is Yumm-o. It is on the spicy side, so if you're not up for the challenge, ask for the mild, or both (they are generous with the salsa) I've gotten the enchiladas (the sauce is heavenly), the Chimichanga (lightly fried, in a nice white queso sauce), and the "Special Dinner", which is a chalupa, chile relleno, taco, and enchilada.. ALL of it YUMMY. OH!! The GUACAMOLE! Let me say, I don't even eat avocados. I hardly eat guacamole, but this, this, is sent from a magical place. I can't even begin to describe how to delicious it is. All of the dishes come with a "guacamole salad" just shredded lettuce, guac, and pico de gallo. So good. I know I've been long-winded, but this place deserves some CREDIT. We go there AT LEAST once a week :-) TRY IT!!! PS, ubercheap..We haven't paid more than $20 for 2 dinners (and we are both STUFFED after) If you happen to order a daily special, you may get out cheaper (under $14 when we got the Chimichanga specials) read more

Great authentic Mexican! We chose to eat in, but just be advised the place is tiny, there's barely room to eat there, so it's more geared toward take-out. We discovered El Toro at the Delaware Taco Festival, after deciding their tacos were our favorite out of all of the ones we tried. The food is delicious and authentic...we had steak soft tacos, cheese nachos to share, and a combo platter with a cheese enchilada, crispy chicken taco, and seasoned rice and refried beans on the side. We loved everything, especially the cheese nachos, which came with salsa on the side. Also, the food was ready very quickly...we barely had to wait at all, and everything was correct. Additionally, the staff was friendly and polite...they wanted to make sure we enjoyed everything, which of course we did! Also, it was affordable! So in all, El Toro is a great place for authentic Mexican food that's served up fast and doesn't cost a lot...my husband and I both agreed we'll be back! read more

This is for the Cantina up the street from the take out joint. Nice location. very friendly staff, from the host to the bartender to the waiter. Margaritas are made from fresh juice, not a bottled sour mix. fresh chips and salsa hit the table as soon as you sit down. The food is essentially the same as you get from their take out. Ordered a grilled shrimp with special sauce and it was cooked well enough, but no grill marks so not sure how they cooked it also the special sauce was just their salsa. Made the mistake of sitting outside as it becomes the smoking area for the bar patrons as well as everyone trying to have a conversation on their cell phone while avoiding the noise inside. Will probably sit inside next time unless they work that out. read more

The service was great, prices are reasonable and food was good. I had the chicken burrito. The fresh guacamole was delicious. Really great! Ten bucks for two enchiladas, taco, and rice. Delicious meal, beautiful atmosphere, stellar service. I'll be back.

The hubby and I typically only order from here on taco Monday when they have $1.25 hard tacos and $1.75 soft tacos. Service is quick and friendly. Tacos are good not great but I don't eat meat so the tacos I eat are just beans lettuce and tomatoes. Wish they had a vegetable taco or fajita with roasted veggies like zucchini carrots and squash. It's good enough for Monday's and lunch. I've never eaten in but they do have two tables for eating in. Oh their salsas are pretty good we get mild hot and green. Definitely worth a try but don't expect to be blown away read more
