    12oz NY strip & potato

Wow I was really shocked by this one. So underwhelming for the good reviews on both Google and Yelp. First off the restaurant was poorly lit and had blinding white Edison bulbs hanging over some tables. Traveling today and stopped in Elkins for dinner, we waited about 10-15 minutes before a host or server brought us to a table, even longer to get the drinks. I ordered ribbon fries and they were out of quaso, so they were dry and bland. My partner got fajitas (his was cold and not seasoned) and I got a 12oz NY strip that was 30$. By far the worst 30$ steak I've ever had. First off it was closer to 7-8 oz, it was wet and lukewarm, and overcooked. It honestly tasted almost like it was microwaved it was so tough! It claimed to be 21 day dry aged, which is laughable. They also were out of potatoes, which left me with the twice baked potatoes which was just half a baked potato with some white cheese on it. My plantains were burnt, all around a less than ideal meal. Also the salad bar was missing half its item and had old wilted lettuce. I wouldn't recommend stopping here.

El Toro, a Brazilian/Venezuelan Steakhouse, opened this past week in Elkins in the previous location of Duke's Steakhouse. Upon entering, you will find a hostess/cashier area where you will be greeted and seated. I couldn't help but appreciate the beautiful wooden floors and and booths separated by high bead board partitions, Latina artwork on the walls, upbeat music playing and what appears to be a future salad bar area. The entire restaurant and bar is clean and appealing. I placed a to go order of Chicken Tostones (green plantains) trio and Cameron's Al Ajillo (Shrimp w/garlic sauce) with selected sides of white rice and and fries plantains (sweet). As you can tell, I am a big fan of plantains lol. Service was professional and polite. Multiple staff upon seeing me near the counter came by to see if I needed anything while I waited. I learned that the manager had placed the wrong appetizer for my order but she caught it before bringing my order out and gave me that appetizer to try for free! The food looks, smells and tastes delicious. Care is definitely taken for presentation as well. I'd love a bit more quantity of the the appetizers for the price but it isn't a deal breaker, I will definitely be back. Kudos to the manager/owner and staff! Welcome to the area.

I rarely make time to leave a Yelp review because I'm busy and there are usually countless other reviews, but I'm taking a few minutes to leave this one because I saw that the only other Yelp review for this place was in 2015, a 3-star, which I found after Googling the hours for this restaurant because I wish to place a take-out order today. Otherwise, I would've never seen it. This restaurant has some of the best food I've eaten in a long time. I'd say "ever" instead of "long time," but I'm trying to temper my review to avoid setting abnormally high expectations. But honestly, this food is amazing, and much better than I expected in a small town in WV. The bread / pizza dough is homemade, and delicious. I'm not sure what the prices were in 2015 when the other review was left, but I consider these prices to be too low for the portions received and the quality, which I'm afraid to say because I don't want to encourage a price hike. Whether dining in or taking out, the food always takes a while to prepare, but I think that's why it's so good. I've waited inside the restaurant for pizza for nearly 30 minutes, but it was worth it. My take out orders usually take 25-30 minutes as well. I highly recommend the calzones and the funnel cake fries. My only complaint is that this restaurant doesn't have consistent "open" hours. They may take days off, or even a whole week, and it's always when I crave their food the most. But this is a small business and they have the right to close whenever they want. They're always closed on Sundays. When they're open, you can tell when you drive by because they put out flags that say "open." They don't seem to have a great social media presence, so there's no way to check online. I suggest calling ahead to make sure they're open if you're planning to eat here on your way to Snowshoe.

Sometimes, when college students leave great reviews, that means good food that isn't too expensive. True here, especially for what you get: generous servings on amazing bakery breads. I had the "Sorry Charlie" on a slice of focaccia -- topped with tomato slices and melted cheese and a satisfyingly crunchy, warm crust, with a simple but nicely refreshing black bean and corn salad. Dessert treats are also worth a splurge. The people couldn't be friendlier with customers of all ages enjoying themselves. (And they have a coffee bar. And a "speakeasy"!)

I also got The Yardbird sandwich after the server recommended it. It's basically just chicken salad and lettuce between a ciabatta roll, but it was simple and great. And what the heck: I can't visit a bakery that has multiple sweets without getting one. I also listened to the advice of the server when she recommended the orange scone. She was right again! It was tender and tasted like a Froot Loop. Blue Sky is located on the corner of a busy street. There are lots of tables, but if you can, sit at the bar that looks out onto the street to see the hustling and bustling college town.
