Great people serving great food!…read more The team at Gooseberries Kafe serves scratch-made breakfast, lunch and baked goods in a community-focused cafe. While it's surrounded by a number of well-known restaurants, this place offers an experience that's unique and satisfying all-around. My wife and I spent a weekend at the hotel located above Gooseberries. Partially due to convenience, we opted to head downstairs for breakfast and received a warm welcome from the owner. We opted for espresso and the French Toast which raised a high bar for any nearby breakfast joints! It's made from their house charcoal bread and complimented with a tangy gooseberry jam and maple syrup. We were so impressed by breakfast that we returned for lunch and shared avocado toast, a breakfast biscuit and roasted vegetables. With every bite we could tell that a lot of care, dedication and precision went into preparing our meal. It was very much appreciated! We even took some of the charcoal bread home for the following week. I'm happy to give Gooseberries my full endorsement and I hope others can enjoy it as much as we did.

Everything from scratch! We really loved their freshly made baked goods (scones, muffins, bread…read morebasket), all their homemade jams, their signature coffee - The RAF, the French toast, the soup of the day (borscht), & great quality eggs. Owners were friendly and accommodating to the little ones in our party. We came on Sunday morning so parking was a breeze. Otherwise, it could potentially be more difficult to find a spot. The interior of the restaurant was modern but quite comfy.

The cinnamon roll was soft, warm, and genuinely delicious. There's no indoor seating, but they have a few outdoor tables which is nice to enjoy the San Diego weather. Parking was also pretty easy since there's a lot of paid street parking right in front of the café. Vegan or not, I think this place is definitely worth trying. My only complaint is that they don't offer "for here" cups, and even the cinnamon roll came in a to-go box, so it was a little hard trying to eat it without a plate. I really hope they eventually switch to reusable cups and plates for people eating there.

In Bread and Cie, they have a delicious pistachio croissant. I also love their almond croissants. The bear claws are good. I recently tried the coconut guava danish and it is divine. Because of prices lately, and the distance to get pastries, I had to get at least 4 items with each visit. I have come 2x in the last month. I also get the crobone (i don't know what combination it is but its a nice smaller pastry to eat with your latte. The service can be busy, they have outdoor spaces and indoor tables. Parking is still limited but at least they have one that is also home to Luna Grill and Peet's coffee. Ambience is the business of a bakery serving breakfast and lunch. You see all the various breads that are available, you can order pastries or sandwiches for your visit. I have had the sandwich before and they are pretty good, it's been awhile though so I don't know the quality now. Still its an institution with its outside cafe a view to the goings on in San Diego's mixed Hillcrest community.

The inside is gorgeous and there's a spot especially for dogs outside. Their outdoor seating with patio is beautiful! This place is absolutely divine! At this point, I dont really care about how the food tastes. Lol! Let's start off with the one problem i had with this place. The parking!!! It took me 20m to find parking and im not about to park my car on the street. I have precious dogs! Lol kidding. I just couldn't find any parking on the street or in the block! I suppose i came during lunch which is probably really busy. When I left, there were quite a few opened parking spots. This place is connected to an apartment complex surrounding retail stores. The leasing building is right next to Gravity Heights. I used to rent a 4k+ a month apartment in a retail area and let me tell you, its a hassle to find parking and not take a retail parking spot without having your complex email you everyday about your car potentially being towed lol! I understand this pain. Now that we are past that, let's get to why this place deserves 5 stars. The service is excellent! My server came around at the perfect times and they seem to really care if I enjoyed my meal! The stellar atmosphere with attentive service is enough for me! I got a gravity burger protein style which I dont think did the burger justice. I was going to eat with my husband later at a Vietnamese restaurant and I can only choose one carb for the day. My diabetic life is tough! Lol. I chose the Cesar salad to go with my burger. My burger was delicious bc of the caramelized onions. I didn't really taste a sauce in the burger but the excellent bacon with the much needed caramelized onions made the burger fantastic! The IPA hazy beer i had with my meal was also light and mellow. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and meal. My babies also enjoyed their burger! The weather was perfect today and it was a nice time and to think I was not going to eat here bc the parking definitely was a huge deterrent. Next time ill bring human company!

We got sat right away in the happy hour area. As we were walking in I noticed the decor looked really nice and the ambience of the restaurant felt clean and modern. We ordered some happy hour cocktails to start and they were really strong (but tasty) in my opinion. Maybe I'm just lightweight though. We also ordered some oysters, the shrimp aguachile, and the smashburger to share which were all tasty. Service was good, our waitress was friendly and checked up on us. Overall a successful happy hour visit and would visit again as they seem to have a rotating menu.

I came in and immediately the woman working in the front I could tell was rude and radiating negative energy. I am witnessing a common theme about this with many of the other people who have left negative reviews about this establishment. You guys also seem to reply and pretend like you resolve the issue but there have been multiple review follow-ups where people claim you guys do not actually make up for the horrible service. Anyway, I walk in and immediately I have to wait a long time to order and I can tell that the guy in front of me has been there a while already. Finally, I place my order and the lady is so awfully rude. Every answer I had for her questions made me feel that I had done something wrong even though I was very nice and just there for a simple thing: to get a sandwich. I usually greet people and ask how they are doing but she got directly to business. I understand that she was busy but she was immediately unwelcoming. "What kind of bread would you like?" (I do not see the bread on the menu when I immediately look up so I reply, "white (I will admit there are many different types of bread but I did not know what they have and usually when I order somewhere I just say white and they know what I am talking about or politely ask for clarification) *she rolls her eyes* "french, sourdough, Dutch?" Then, she asked me if I wanted lettuce and tomato. I replied, "just lettuce please" and again she makes me feel dumb for just ordering. I ask if the sandwich comes with mayonnaise because it was not listed but there were additional items on it and she says that they do not have mayonnaise but another sauce as if mayonnaise is a crazy request. "Can I get a name for the order?" "Jessica" "Jessica?" like my name is ugly or something and not like she could not hear me. At this point I am picking apart everything that she uttered but seriously such an unhappy woman with no hospitality skills. Trust me on this and either experience it yourself or read some other 1-star reviews if you do not believe me. She then walked away as I was still paying so I could not even ask for a receipt or anything. This was essentially the extent of my direct experience with the woman in the front but I witnessed more things happening to other customers while I was waiting for my sandwich for a really long time. Apparently an order kept getting rung up and people kept coming in trying to pick it up but it had already been picked up and the woman would say "communicate this. someone already picked it up" with a huge attitude like it was their fault there was a glitch in the system. I also took notice that there was a big order for 4:30 and when the order was finished, one of the male workers went over and served himself a drink from the soft drinks dispenser and when he was handing the woman all of the many bags, he took a break to take a drink out of his cup. I think it also important that I add she had already been given 5-6 bags and was caring a lot and he was not coughing and desperately needed water and I do not even think there was water in the cup. I will also say though that all of the customers waiting were very friendly and understanding that they were busy and I am too but there was no reason to be rude and lack the principles of basic costumer service. I work with people too and we all have bad days but by the looks of these other reviews, this is a very common occurrence. I am glad people are willing to speak up about this. Another thing I noticed was that apparently someone's order was not in the system and they made the person feel so bad for it and that it was their fault except with all of these problems, it is highly likely that this could have been the establishment's fault but they never even entertained this. I might also add that the woman that took my order when she was making sandwiches I saw her cough into her hands (no gloves mind you) and then grab the *at least it was* wrapped sandwich and put it in the bag. I wanted to try this place because it was close to my campus and I will say that the sandwich tasted good but it was nowhere near worth the horrible aura I experience while being at Ike's. I will surely never spend another dime at Ike's and encourage my friends to not support a business that does not prioritize cleanliness and kindness. Even when they packed up my order, the same man who was taking sip breaks handing a woman her order, was throwing my stuff together and gave me a tiny bag when he saw I was also holding my chips and drink. That was not very thoughtful if you ask me but I would not expect thoughtfulness after what I had already endured from this sandwich joint. I think Ike's would benefit from a personality change and should consider improving their warmth and helpful nature.
