Food is good, but does seem to have lost some of its specialness over the years. Also with staff, especially the young girls are very rude.

I can only review on the amazing service our family received. My cousin reserved a few tables in the patio after a family event. It was clean and warm. Our server was very efficient and kind, despite the chaos of multiple checks, tables, etc. My cousin ordered the enchiladas and it was big enough to share with her daughter and still not finish. My mom had a chili relleno and she said it was good. I tried the mole and it was good, sweet, different than others I've tried. The "chips" were whole fried tortillas but were fresh and delicious with the house salsa(close to a pico de gallo). We enjoyed the flan. All in all a nice spot with really big portions. read more

I recently went to El Tapatío in Porterville, and while the service was actually really good and the staff was friendly, the food just wasn't the best. It came out hot, which I appreciated, but the rice really needed more flavor and overall the meal felt kind of basic. For the price, I expected something a little better quality or bigger portions. I might recommend it if you're already nearby, but honestly there are better options. I'd probably choose El Cielito Lindo in Lindsay instead. read more

El Tapatío is a Porterville institution. if you have not been and are in the area, they are certainly worth the visit. Expect giant portions and delicious fresh tostadas to go with their house salsa. Even after eating a large lunch I had enough leftovers to share between my wife and I for dinner. They were very busy at lunch, so was a little bit slow, but that can be forgiven because the value is there. read more

If you want authentic Mexican food, I recommend that you not go to El Tapatío. This has been one of the worst restaurants that I have been to. The food is not made traditionally, so if you want actual Mexican food, don't go there and go somewhere else. Not only is the food bad, but it is expensive as well. Service was ok. Kind of felt like our waitress was upset but not at us so that is understandable. The food is what was a letdown. I was excited to order a $25 plate of chile verde only to find out it was beef and not very good tasting(idk tasted like cachete but in a carne en su jugo type sauce). I would redo the menu and note that it's beef chile verde. Misleading to me at least unless I misread the menu. My wife ordered a chicken enchilada and the chicken was dry as well. Love this place. We've been eating here for over 30 years and the service and food has stayed consistent. Beans and rice sound simple but you'd be surprised how many can mess that up or just give you old greasy rice. Not El Tap there beans and rice are always fresh and delicious. El Tapatio is one of my comfort spots. My grandparents loved this place, my parents have always eaten here, and now I do too. The atmosphere here is relaxed, and the food is authentically delicious! Many of the dishes are similar to my family's cooking so I appreciate the nostalgia I get when I am there. The portion sizes are generous; I often share a dish with someone else. I highly recommend their burrito or nachos for sharing, as both are huge! I also enjoy their tacos, camarones a la diabla, and the tostada mixta. The order over the phone didn't specify price and I was overcharged $26 dollars for one green chicken enchilada plate and one bean and rice burrito. The enchilada is completely dry inside and out without green sauce as requested and no cheese either, just dry chicken. The plate is mostly beans and rice. My recommendation is to eat there. To go orders are inconsistent in size and increasingly worse this past month. My family orders here weekly (95% of the time is take out) for over 20 years, and it seems like something is up with their take out. Portion control is off. Ordered meal today for my son and brought home. Each order of beans and rice had about 1/2 cup of beans and 2/3 cup of rice on top. One order was with a meal and the other was ala carte. So, it was roughly $9 for just over a single cup of beans and rice combined for my ala carte order. At the restaurant you receive 4x that amount. Very inconsistent (especially when busy). read more

Two months ago, I decided to try El Tapito in Porterville since I would always hear good stuff about it from friends and coworkers. But I had a horrible experience. The waiter was super rude and did not provide a great customer experience. As for the food, it was good but not great, and since it was pricy, it could have been better. More than enough food on one plate for one setting and you could have left overs the next day. It was $50 for trash food for two of us. The enchilada sauce was literally sweet enough to pass for dessert. The potato taco was so flavorless that I added half a bottle of hot sauce and salt plus it was barely warm. And the rice was so crunchy it was like straight out of the bag. We have been coming here for years. Our favorite location next to the Teapot Dome. This place is a favorite in our city and it's evident why. My wife grew up on their food, as did our daughter growing up. Everything is good here, but I decided to try their Menudo and Chorizo and egg burrito. It's a theme with me. Not sure why. They go great together. We sat outside in the patio area. They practiced social distancing and all COVID rules were in effect. The chips and salsa are pretty great and I could drink the salsa because it is that good.. Their iced tea is brewed and refreshing. So the Menudo comes pretty basic, but great flavor. I added cilantro, white onions, and lemon. Oh yeah and black pepper. So good!! There was some knuckles in there but I passed on them. But WOW great flavor!!! The chorizo and egg burrito was also very good, Their chorizo is so good, just a different it seems like, extra spicy and good!! Can you imagine if it had potatoes. DANG!!! While there, we visit with the family members and it never fails, but always see friends from school or growing up there in Porterville... This is the most visited mexican restaurant in Porterville. A bit pricey but portions are big. I have never been able to finish any of their dishes. So I always have a second (or third) meal out of it. Their enchiladas are mediocre and they have a heavy hand on the cheese.....in the dish or the refried beans. However, they have excellent salsa and chips, and superb ceviche. Good tostadas and tacos. My favorite dish is their Camarones a la diabla ($21.95). Lots of plump shrimp that is not overcooked with a great diabla sauce. read more

VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED in this place!!! My wife ordered Asada fries and when she got them the fries were saturated with grease and did not taste good. So we sent it back and they questioned us as what was wrong with it. We told them but apparently it wasn't a good enough excuse. The owner didn't want to take it off the bill and was gonna still charge half the price of the plate. We were not gonna pay for something that we didn't eat and was unconsumable (I wouldn't even feed this to my dog). The owner was gonna still try to charge our credit card, until my wife said do not charge our card, I have witnesses watching you. But the owner was still arguing until my daughter grabbed our credit card back. Then the owner decided to go ahead and take the plate off of the tab. Very sad, we thought highly of this place. Before our dinner arrived, we loved the thin tortilla chips which were served whole instead of wedges. Spicy salsa was just perfect. My dinner order of chili rellenos and green chili enchiladas with refried beans and Mexican rice was served on a large hot plate. The food was delicious and the portions filled the entire plate. I dined with 3 other people and they also enjoyed their meal. Service was great and friendly too. I definitely recommend this place to my friends and family to dine! read more
