She's a big ole loose burrito, but tastes great! Pretty sure I've batted the cycle there and tried it all and am yet to find a bad dish.

I've been going to El Taco for quite a few years and I can honestly say; I've never been disappointed. Their food is always fresh and well prepared. I agree completely with Chris D.'s thoughts: "It is not a Mexican restaurant, it IS a very good cantina, for authentic, basic staples." Went in here for lunch. What a joke. First off me and another person go in and my friend orders a taco salad. Well you can get any meat in it. He went for shrimp. I decided to go for a simple taco. Salad cost about 12$ and the taco 4$. They have a small indoor dining area and a small patio outdoors but sun doesn't hit it. We waited around 20 minutes and when they called our names we grabbed our food and went outside. To the disappointment the salad had pinky finger size shrimp and the taco was smaller then an old eltaco kit soft shell wrap. What a rip off. I don't advise going to this place. If you have eaten really good Mexican food, I'd say skip this joint. It's just ok with small portions for the price and not much flavor. The spicy salsa was not very spicy, so there wasn't much to add to the blandness. Cool venue in the summer with an outdoor patio! read more

We LOVE El Taco. My boys start talking about it before we even leave Calgary for our annual trip to Nelson. It's awesome for us because we can all eat there happily (I'm gluten and dairy intolerant), and my husband and I appreciate the great margaritas. It is very family friendly and cheerful. This place has excellent fresh food for everyone. I've had the tacos and I would recommend them. On a hot day have one of their slush drinks. The watermelon hits the spot and isn't too sweet. The lime is tart and refreshing. Service is quick and the pager system work great. Remember that you walk past the patio and order inside. You can eat inside but outside is the best on a hot day with a light breeze. read more

If El Taco was actually in Mexico, it would be an open-sided road-side shack, with a line of customers. It is not a Mexican restaurant, it IS a very good cantina, for authentic, basic staples. In the middle of winter, in the BC Rockies, this creates quite a welcome image. The menu is on a chalk board above the order area. All the mainstream standards are there (Chimichanga, Burrito, Quesadilla, Tacos etc.), and you pay as you order. Your name is taken, and even when they are busy, it won't be 10 minutes before you hear it hollered. So: real fast-food, done as it should be. Great, fresh, tasty ingredients, nothing processed, all made-to-order. There is a simple eat-in area, and a more popular (in summer) outside patio. Either way, everything is geared towards eating fairly quickly and then moving on. Great value for a tasty, filling lunch or snack - but don't plan on this being where you will spend your evening. read more

El Taco makes fresh, tasty food. All of their food is good. They offer a nice selection of Mexican fast-food staples (tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, etc.), and the price is right. The ONLY problem I have is that it is so slooooow! It should take about 1 minute at the most to put together a burrito in a place like this (Chipotle can do it in about 45 seconds, a taco truck in Texas would take around 30 seconds), yet for some reason, when I walk in, even when I am the only customer, it takes about 5 to 8 minutes (sometimes up to 10 minutes) to get my burrito. Why? What is going on back there? It makes it all the more frustrating that there is a high wall blocking my view so I can never see exactly what the hold-up is. I realize this is Nelson, where slow-motion movement is often the norm, particularly for people in customer service positions (I'm talking to you, Save On cashiers and BMO tellers!). Based on that, I might expect 2 minutes? 3 minutes? But 5 to 8 is ridiculous. This is supposed to be fast food, and I have a job to get back to (I secretly think I might be the only person in Nelson who actually works). I do not have the luxury of a drawn-out 3 margarita lunch. Also, it is VERY hot in El Taco, even in the winter. Wear a tank top and some short-shorts. read more

Nice fat burritos. A bit lacking in flavours, but good enough. Reminds me of 1980's Canadian Mexican/SoWest restaurants...just not that authentic but more a northern translation of that cuisine. BUT very satisfying after enjoying some hard play on the local trails. read more

El Taco has great food and big portions, it's just that simple. I would give the food 5 stars, it's only the decor of the inside seating area that makes me give it only 4. The decor is nothing special, and they tend to leave the outside door open so that you're sitting there in the Fall freezing. The outside seating patio is nice in the summer, though. Burritos are huge, rice is tasty, salads are fresh, and try the tortilla soup. . . . MMMM, yummy! i eat gluten free and there are lots of things I can eat here, and they can also give you corn tortillas instead of the wheat ones on some things. This restaurant is a half cross between fast food and sit down restaurant. If you have a margarita, you will be wasted! This place is not to be missed. I'm pretty sure the food is authentic Mexican too. read more
