Overall, the food and atmosphere were good, and our server was kind and clearly trying his best. There were a few mix-ups with our order that seemed to come from a communication barrier rather than lack of effort. I ordered a Diet Coke and received sweet tea, and when I asked about quesabirria with less fat, it came out without meat instead of with the usual birria. When I asked for the meat on the side, it was brought out as pork rather than the beef birria. I don't think any of this was intentional, just a series of misunderstandings. Visiting West Monroe. Had the burrito balboa. Probably the biggest burrito I have ever seen. Filled with rice chicken and beef delicious.Chicken and beef were very tender. Most people would not be able to eat the whole burrito. My wife had the street tacos which she said were also very good. The chips and salsa was very good. The salsa had a little kick to it. Ok. I've heard there is new management. Well he or she has ruined a great thing! We loved going before. Salsa was perfect, rice and beans we great. Well now they are not!!! The re-fried beans are ORANGE! OMG. The rice is dry and the salsa taste like nothing but Onion! Why change something that was so popular? We may not go back. Excellent food! I love Mexican and of course have my favorite back home. We were visiting family & ate here on our last night. We got there about 5pm and we're served pretty quickly. Once we left, it was pretty filled up but the waiters seemed to be hustling to get everyone taken care of. I had a Veggie quesadilla with a cheese enchilada and beans. I asked for a side of sour cream & chopped cilantro. I LOVE CILANTRO and I put it on everything just about. It was very fresh and you could tell they don't mass chop Cilantro and let it get brown and dried out. The queso dip was great & chips were fresh. I'd most definitely eat here again! My local 2 fave Mexican restaurants don't have and do Veggie quesadilla so I will be asking to see if they can make it. read more

Well being a native of San Antonio and Hispanic I was totally shocked. But I did talk w the manager later and he said the guacamole was fresh and not out of the bag. I ate here for the first time for lunch with my mom when I came to visit. I usually eat at another Mexican restaurant in town, but I decided since it was new, I would try it. Just like most Mexican places, they drop the chips and salsa right as you sit down. I LOVE me some chips and salsa, and I have to say this salsa was more flavorful than my previous favorite. We only stopped in because it was near the sketchy hotel we had checked into. The waitress suggested a luncheon plate(her favorite) . Who knew you could order it for dinner? Anyway, it was delicious. Shrimp, chicken and steak over rice with a queso sauce. A great suggestion. Full bar, TV screens and even though it is in hotel row, filled with locals. Looking for a restaurant close to our hotel and decided Mexican would be the choice. Having had a poor experience at Chile Verde on a previous trip through Monroe we opted for El Somb. Really bad choice on my part. First indication was a broken door handle on one of two entrance doors with an old sign directing you to use the one on the left. Not a good first impression. Second, we had to pass not two but four unoccupied tables with various dishes, goblets, chips etc., left on them. And this was at 5:15PM. An adjacent table had a left over chip basket sitting out during our whole dinner. Service was friendly and efficient. Chips were fresh and the salsa in a self serve carafe was a good idea. The Chile Relleno's were fresh and well cooked, but filled with some kind of industrial white cheese whiz that was anything but Mexican. Refritos were the purified version that we've seen in other places on I-20 and the rice was underwhelming. We ordered margaritas that were served warm in plastic goblets. They were promoting a 2 for 1 of various drinks and we immediately figured out why; there was probably not even one shot in our two drinks. Active management was invisible. read more

I have been to this restaurant several times now. I work next door at Logan's and have popped in for a drink a few times. The first time I sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. The restaurant wasn't busy at all so I sat at the bar, drank my drink, and watched the game on the television screen. My one drink came with free chips and salsa so I was pretty impressed. The bartender was nice enough so I left him a tip despite only being served one drink. The very next experience I had, I walked in, sat at the same Chair at the bar and ordered the same drink. Not five minutes after getting my chips and salsa the bartender approaches me from behind (The restaurant is very slow I might add so I'm not inconveniencing anyone) And he proceeds to tell me "you order now or you get out my restaurant" I was truly stunned and asked if he treated all his guests this way. I then asked to see the manager. When I told him he gave me a blank stare as if he didn't understand the problem. After pleading my case for what seemed like minutes with no response He finally said "I will talk to him." I said "that's it? I at least shouldn't have to pay for this one drink" However they made me pay for the drink and I left on principle even though I had actually planned on ordering food. I have never been so blatantly disrespected in a restaurant, especially by a manager as well. I would review the food but I never got the opportunity to try it because of the rudeness of the staff. I would suggest taco bell before I would suggest el Sombrero. read more
