Our family of four had dinner on a Monday evening. Service was slow and non-attentive. Food was spotty, not up to their usual standards.

We came here after being told it was Mexican food, which it isn't. It's Peruvian food fyi. That being said, the food is very good. My husband is especially fond of their pork chops with grilled pineapple. We've been here numerous times and have always left happy. read more

I have eaten here countless times and loved it although the past two times not so much. I'm a pico/salsa fiend and bought take out containers constantly, but lately it has been way watered down to the point your outfit is completely splattered by the time you're through. It's soupy. Flavor is dull. The pico used to be thicker and more bright tasting with fresh tomatoes and more cilantro. I ordered the chicken fajita and it lacked any sort of flavor. My husband and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. We were planning a trip away for the weekend but our plans changed when he found out his systems administrator job was lost because the company was going out of business. We changed gears and decided to just go out for dinner and chose our favorite restaurant, El Serrano. A" little birdie" told a manager that it was our 25th anniversary and we were waited on hand and foot by the waitress and manager the entire time. So far the evening was great . The food was awesome and the service was speedy, kinda wish you would get more chips and salsa free but that's me. Would give 5 stars but the parking was bad. Went there for dinner 12/28/17. Were told it would be approx. a 35 minute wait for a table of 4. Shortly thereafter a group of 5 came in and were seated immediately. WHAT!!! When we questioned this, the host claimed that was because they had an open table for 5 - but not 4. Why they couldn't seat 4 people at a table for 5 and make the 5 wait was beyond any reasoning we could come up with. We should have left at that point since we had already waited 15 minutes and were now told it would be ANOTHER 35 to 45 minutes! Finally after being seated approx 30 minutes later, we waited another 15 minutes before being approached by anyone. Finally, it took another 35 minutes before our dinners were served of which 2 were not hot and the other 2 appeared and tasted like they had been kept under a heating element too long. My husband and I used to eat here quite often after we built our house in the Hershey area in 2005, but our visits started tapering off within the past few years, so we decided to go back recently since it had been about a year. Unfortunately, we were reminded of why we have been coming less often and are at the point where we are questioning if we will ever go back now. On this visit, we were told the wait would be about 20-25 minutes, so we gave our name and cell phone number and went over to the bar area to order drinks and wait. After about 45 minutes, and becoming a little suspicious when all the people around us had been called that we were sure arrived after us, we checked with the front and all of a sudden they had a table open up right away. What a coincidence! (Not) Our favorite is the pollo fundito, and that was good, but I do question the price of $14 for chicken and cheese grilled in a burrito. After we ate and the bill came, I noticed that I was charged $2 for my hot tea, which I had already paid for at the bar and carried over with me, and when I asked the waitress about it, she said that they charge for refills on hot tea. (Seriously? a Lipton tea bag and hot water???) I was also a little annoyed that they usually put the tea in a full size glass, but the guy at the bar said they were out, so he had to put it in one of those very small saucer-like coffee cups, so of course it was gone and I needed another quickly. Little annoyances like this are the norm for what we've experienced within the past few years, so I think we're pretty much done with El Serrano for the moment. read more

On Tuesday April 1st my husband and I went to El Serrano restaurant for lunch with my one year old son. We were greeted by a young girl who probably hated every second of her job. She gave us a dirty high chair that had the previous child's food stuck on it. We ordered the fish tacos for appetizers. They were ok. Then we ordered our main course. 15 minutes later a manager comes up to us and asks us to move tables. I asked why. He replied that he had a school trip and they needed my table. The table we sat at was a table for four and in the section we sat in had no room to add another table. I told the manager that the restaurant is empty and why can't you find another table. He replied no I need that one. I then proceeded to ask the nice waitress Maurita for my check and she asked me what was the problem and I explained how embarrassed I was in the way the manager treated us. My food wasn't even served yet. So I told the waitress that I'm taking my food to go. The manager never came back. While I was talking to the waitress all he was doing was preparing my table for the next guest. I paid $50 bucks for take out food. As I was exiting the restaurant I spoke to two other waiters about the situation and they informed me that that wasn't the first time that this manager pulled a stunt like that. He has no regard for people and I will never eat there again. The best part of this whole story is that the chicken fajitas weren't even good. I should've went to Taco Bell. 18th century old world charm on the inside with 18 century people running the place. read more

The atmosphere is perfection. So much time, energy, and money made that happen. There are even chairs, with el serrano carved out on them in wood. The service staff was friendly and accommodating (although there were long periods of time were the friendly waiter disappeared ) The most important part: the food. I was surprised to see so many great reviews on the food. I was even more surprised about the people who photographed the food, and still had positive reviews. I went in with my mother for lunch, although we ordered from the dinner menu...didn't appear that way. My mom ordered a shrimp salad entrée, came out in a small taco bowl with mixed greens, and four shrimp(at twelve dollars). I ordered a house salad which had the same mixed greens, and two cherry tomatoes sliced in half.. Nothing else, but dressing for five bucks.. My entrée was a combo which included a soft shell taco with beef, some indistinguishable chicken burrito, or enchillda, or who knows, with sauce, and another wrapped piece of tortillashit with tasteless offerings in it. BUT, the middle school lunch version..ughh..el rodeo is only a couple miles away.. In addition, there was a small helping of refried beans, with a few tablespoons of rice. The most generous portion given out, was actually the sour cream. This they bothered to pipe out through a pastry cone..:() winning.. The highlight of the meal was the fried ice cream..very satisfying..and the chips and salsa were good as well. The rest I forgot about two minutes ago. That's the problem with these massive, gigantic restaurants.. The kind you could get lost in, like this one. So much energy goes towards upkeep, and rent.. the quality of the food becomes second fiddle. That's the case here. It's way overpriced, for small portions, and mediocre quality of food. Worst, is that middle America thinks they're getting some kind of unique dinning (or cultural) experience ...meh. read more

We had dinner at this restaurant last night and it was horrible. We had been previously turned off by their poor customer reception months ago, as they told me over the phone that there was a 20 minute wait and on arrival it was 90 minutes. We walked out. We should not have given this place a second chance. A 25 minute wait when the restaurant is 25% full at 5:30 pm on a Saturday? When we arrived one of the managers told us to follow her to the lounge area to wait and order drinks. After I spoke to reception for 15 seconds and turned my head she was gone for good. Thanks for the great service, manager. The margaritas were great. The nachos we ordered were horrendous. This restaurant promotes its hours as eco-friendly, and it shows in their food. Every order is consistently lukewarm - it's obvious that they are saving energy. The chicken was in chunks instead of pulled, and there was almost no cheese. Fresh ingredients? The olives were from a can. We sent them back despite the manager's contention that their food is fresh. Sorry, you won't get that over on us. The server forgot plates and napkins. Off to dinner. Nothing against kids but with these prices and the elegant interior of this place, seeing infants and toddlers everywhere is not expected. We both ordered crabmeat enchiladas. The food came out lukewarm again - the cold, tasteless refried beans had a squirt bottle of cold cheese. The crab was intensely salty and lukewarm. We were afraid to eat much of that. Food poisoning is not funny. The tortillas were tasteless. The food here has no ethnic originality, no life to it. The prices for these were a joke. Yet, the place was packed by the end of dinner. The management is obviously more concerned with putting butts in the seats than the basics. El Serrano is succeeding in scamming Lancaster, perhaps because the folks there don't know what bad Mexican food is like. We do, and we are not going back. Sooner or later water finds its level and when it does, the management has no excuse. read more

Love love the food there. First time visitors from the Detroit area, we're used to authentic Mexican and Peruvian food along with a very diverse background in food. We were concerned about reading some of the reviews on here about them not being kid friendly as well as some that said the food is to expensive etc. When we first showed up this place was huge! We go in there and it was really neat to see the background of the culture along with wood craved benches, chairs, wall art etc. Low lighted would be a great place for a romantic evening. They accommodated us with our children and had children menus...so I don't understand the bad reviews for having children there. Personally, children and parents should realize the different from paper napkin restaurants verses clothes napkin restaurants, totally different settings. This isn't your average Mexican restaurant. I ordered the chimicanga, I loved it! My husband got some steak dinner and the steak was to die for, nicely seasoned and tender! Will go there again don't let the bad reviews change your mind! I have dined at El Serrano on a couple of occasions first for my company's Christmas party then on my own. I find each time I go more spectacular then the last. The food is amazing, I suggest the Lomo Saltado, and the atmosphere takes your breath away. Just walking in to the restaurant you can tell much time and attention went in to every detail of the building. The servers and managers make you feel less like a customer and more like a guest, they are very attentive and eager to educate you on the food and history of the restaurant. On my last trip I decided to try Culturas and was once again blown away by the experience. I enjoyed my fill of Pinchos, Ceviche, and Ropa Veija which were all a treat for my taste buds. I would have to say a trip to either El Serrano or Culturas will provide you with an unforgettable cultural experience and not just a regular meal at a regular restaurant. My hat is off to the owner, managers, and staff of El Serrano. I look forward to my next experience. read more

POOR MANAGEMENT. We have been frequent loyal customers at El Serrano's who have kept coming back on an every other week basis for the past 5 years or so--despite the fact that the restaurant is rather pricey. We love the food and the service is generally (although not always) good. But the management has disappointed us now on two occasions. The first time we had trouble with them over customer service and went to the management, they were rude to us but we eventually overlooked that and continued to come back. The issue this time was over a $10 off loyal customer coupon. The coupon (which we received by email for having signed up on their loyal customer list previously) enticed us to choose El Serrano's over another restaurant that evening. We had the coupon on our phone, but had not printed it out and it was therefore not accepted by the waitress. The manager on duty said how they have had problems with the wait staff using invalid codes or using the same code multiple times (I guess pocketing the value of the coupon)--so not only was he implying that he didn't trust us as loyal customers not to use the coupon code more than once but he was also essentially implying that he didn't trust his own wait staff. I don't care how good the food is, when you have management that completely distrusts the customer and ruins their evening in this fashion, it is not worth coming back. Suffice it to say that this once loyal customer ha had enough. Treat your customers like crap and they won't be coming back. read more

food is OK , music was a lot better but watch out for your bill specially if you are with a large group ,cause they can double charge you on so many items and you might be in a position that you don't want to make seen about the price of your bill. read more
