This place has a special place in my heart. Back when I used to go to Gainesville college (before…read moreit became UNG), my friends and I would come here for their pupusas. For just $8 bucks (back then) or less, it would be enough to fill us for the day. I came when it first opened and the interior is still the same. It's dark and not a place I would say cozy. The only thing on their menu that I always come back and back again is their tamales. It's different than the regular tamales that you're used to. It's made out of potatoes instead of corn so the texture is soft and melts in your mouth. Their seasoning is just right; actually, it's perfect in my opinion. Since my UNG/Gainesville day, I have moved to Cali and have tried high and low, near and far, all the Salvadorian places I can find. No places tamales match this place. Every time I come home to GA for a visit, I would always make sure to stop by. I had their pupusas and tacos before but it's been awhile. I remember them tasting pretty good. Maybe I should order some next time. Their melon drink is the best. Not too sweet, not too strong in melon flavor. Its honestly perfect in my option.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated with little details representing El Salvador. I think our server is also the cook that makes the pupusas so you can tell the food is authentic. I would say the ambiance is not as modern and the lighting is somewhat dim inside. Overall, I'll keep coming here whenever I miss a food from my parent's home!

From the moment we walked in, it was clear this place is a local favorite. The restaurant has a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and the menu offers a great selection of traditional Mexican dishes, along with a few Salvadoran influences that make it even more unique. One of the highlights of the evening was meeting the owner, Antonio Ramirez. Throughout the meal, he made his way around the restaurant, stopping at each table with a smile to ask how everything was and to make sure guests were enjoying themselves. That level of personal attention is becoming increasingly rare and speaks volumes about how much he cares about both the food and the customer experience. It's also obvious that the local college crowd has discovered this gem. There were plenty of students enjoying dinner, and it seemed like the margaritas were especially popular--particularly when Mom and Dad were picking up the tab! Fortunately, the margaritas are well worth it, with generous pours and plenty of options to choose from. The food was excellent, the portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable. Most importantly, the flavors felt authentic and homemade rather than the typical chain restaurant version of Mexican food.

This authentic…read moreSalvadoran restaraunt is such a gem that my family of four visited twice during our recent stay in Franklin while visiting Lake Nantahala. It's located in a shopping center with several other eateries such as a taco restaurant, ice cream shop and bakery. It is a small restaurant with about five to six tables inside. During both visits, we observed several locals dining in or picking up take out. There was a friendly young lady that seated us and took our order. They make the food fresh to order so it takes a little time but nothing unreasonable. The food is definitely worth the wait. We ordered the carne asada meal with plantains & black beans, bean pupusas, jalapeño pupusas, chicken tamale and child's baleada. The carne asada meal was enough for my son to eat and share some with my husband and younger son. I was even able to enjoy several plantains which were prepared perfectly. The pupusas were some of the best we have ever had. They were stuffed with a generous amount of filling and the pupusa dough was moist instead of dry like some places. The bean and cheese pupusa was our favorite but all flavors ordered were delicious. La Union Restaurant Pupuseria will be a regular dining spot for our family when in the area. If you enjoy authentic Salvadoran food then be sure to check out this gem.
