Not really sure how to feel about this place! On the one hand, the food was pretty good and well-seasoned. The steak, ground beef, AND shredded beef were all delicious and cooked perfectly. The rice and beans were flavorful, the cheese dip & salsa were spicy but not overly so, and the enchilada sauce was just okay. The chips were ALL burnt. We asked for more and the waitress said "oh, they're all like that." Why?? The thing I expect most when I go out for Mexican food is good chips! On the other hand, the service was WEIRD and not in a great way. First, despite there being about 15-20 empty booths/tables, they wouldn't seat us and made us wait. Then they seated other people (who didn't have reservations - I checked) at those same booths they wouldn't seat us at! Second, our waitress didn't listen very well as we were ordering. She brought us two margaritas instead of one, tried to bring carne asada instead of carnitas, and was overall not super friendly. Not a terrible waitress, but I've certainly had better. I also have to mention how stupid their kids menu policy is. I get not letting adults order from the kids menu (even if I don't personally think it's right) but 10 years old? Come on! I've NEVER been to a place where it was 10 and under. 12 and under for sure, but 11-year-olds are still children!! We didn't even have kids with us - it just made me so mad that I have to mention it. I picked up lunch here for Mother's Day as it was her wishes. Nothing too crazy. 3 meals, 3 specific orders and 2 of them with requests. First and foremost, my mother requested ground beef in her chimichanga. Upon eating it, it was shredded beef. Immediate turn off. My brother had some special requests that were met. Mine? I ordered off the menu, a lunch special burrito with red sauce and cheese sauce. Mine was a watery mess that honestly had little to no flavor. It just looked like red milky water. Good Mexican place to get some dinner. I was going to subtract 1 star because one of our party's glass had a split seam and it was leaking beverage all over him and his place/silverware/napkin. But it was quickly remedied and due to the fact that this restaurant is open until 10pm, whereas many of the places I was finding at 820 PM tonight were either closed or about to close and I was afraid I was going to have to settle for McDonald's I'm gonna put the star back. I will say I live in California so my judging of Mexican food may be more harsh, but this food is just fine. Nothing too special, but also not bad. The prices make up for it! Cashier just refused my $40 gift card claiming it was expire, when the back of the card CLEARLY states there is no expiration.

It's crazy, but one of the best burgers on the coast is definitely the El Saltillo burger. when other people told me this, I didn't believe them, but I finally broke down and tried it. I don't regret it and it's probably in my top three along coast. read more

Only Mexican restaurant I've been to in Long Beach so far. I absolutely love their Grilled Shrimp Tacos. They are $4 each. My husband ordered the grilled chicken tacos before & he said they were excellent. The Combination A option is delicious as well. This dish is typically called a Speedy Gonzales in most Mexican restaurants. The servers are friendly & the food always comes out fast & hot. The restaurant itself is pretty clean. They have a relatively small bar located at the back of the restaurant. Haven't tried any cocktails yet but most likely will soon. I'd recommend El Saltillo to somebody looking for some good Mexican food. read more

This is your standard local "Meh"xican restaurant. Nothing special, flavors are flat, options are standard, and drink/happy hour specials keep the customers rolling in. Someone had recommended this place to me so I went in with expectations that it would have a little oomf or pazaz but it tastes exactly like the other hundred basic Mexican restaurants I've been to but probably one of my least favorite. If that's what you're looking for (hey we all get a craving for it from time to time) then this place is an okay option. However, I will say that portions are definitely on the smaller side, meat was particularly dry, and the drinks were subpar. The salsa was good but the chips weren't salted which personally drives me nuts. The place is pretty large but was very empty when I came yet the service was so slow. We waited 45 minutes to get our meal after ordering. We were a party of 5 with two babies in car seats yet were seated at a tiny booth for 4 people. After trying to squeeze and make it work we requested to be moved to one of the dozens of empty larger tables. I've had better Mexican in the area so I won't bother returning. read more

There is a sign on the door that says if you don't wear a mask they can't serve you, which is perfectly fine. Inside the restaurant you have a waitress wearing her mask on her chin. I politely asked her to put her mask on and she caught an attitude and said she would get someone else to serve us. I also noticed a guy dressed in street clothes at the cash register with no mask. If you care about your health, please just stay home. This sub-par restaurant isn't worth risking it. You'd think they would be happy to see paying customers during a pandemic but apparently they don't need the business since the service is terrible. The busboy who seated us was hoovering around unoccupied tables near us with nothing to do so I attempted to ask him about a menu item. Within seconds the waitress appeared and barked at me saying I was not to speak to him, I was only supposed to speak to the waitress (?). So, I proceeded to ask several questions about the drink menu and the waitress did not know - saying she only started last week. I asked about a dessert item and was told she was only taking drink orders now. If I was still interested in dessert after my meal she would bring the menu back. Does anyone else order their entree contingent on their dessert selection? The beef taco meat and burrito meat were very lightly seasoned (salt and pepper only) and tasted to have an unusually high beef by-product content. The flauta was overcooked, borderline cooked three + times. The quality of food was edible but lacked Mexican flavor, cooked to order, and freshness. Drown anything in enough sour cream and avocado and you can choke it down. The waitress should address patrons with a better attitude, interact with co-workers more positively, and be trained on menu items. Some silverware items with the self-serve bean soup were not clean. Sad experience on several levels. Two stars are generous for today's experience. read more

18 months since I have had a meal here. Sad to report it is still as mediocre as it was the first time. I wrote about the greasy chips and today they were just as greasy but flavorless as well. The salsa has potential to be better but when you have to add a bunch of salt to make it taste like something that is not good. I ordered a daily lunch special that includes a burrito, taco, enchilada, and tostada (chalupa). It was around $9 Well I don't think I will be back. My boyfriend and I got hungry and decided to door dash some el saltillo. when we got our food, we noticed the salsa, chips and white cheese dip we ordered and paid for wasn't in the bag. we texted our dasher and he proceeded to tell us that he fought the people that work there about the order being wrong for 15 minutes and they denied that it was incorrect repeatedly. when we opened the food that we did get, it was all wrong. my burrito had everything i asked not to be in it. shortly after we both got very very sick. we are pretty sure we have food poisoning. my boyfriend is in agony. i've never had a problem like this before with this el saltillo. very disappointed. read more

We use to go all the time with neighbors, service was quick, fast and food okay. However, I went back with my spouse and had hat (Spanish Trump) on. As soon as I sat down and waitress approached, her face went from smiling to frown and became abrupt with everything we ordered, returning back with numerous items quickly placing them down on table, no eye contact or she would've seen no silverware. Had to ask for everything and was slow played, never would comeback to check, so finished and paid at door, leaving a reminder tip ( the kind that would get my attention) and I'm a very generous tipper. I don't know why there are bad reviews, the food here is really good and you get a lot of it. I generally base a TexMex restaurant based in its salsa and this place delivered. Made fresh with quality ingredients, it delivered just the right amount of heat. The chips were okay, not bad but no gray shakes either. My waitress was so nice and had such a beautiful smile. She couldn't answer simple questions about the resturant (it was my first visit) and she got my order wrong. The margarita were 2 for 1 but they deliver both at the same time...
