Supporting local businesses during Covid is vital to community wellness; so is eating good food and having positive dining experiences. El Rodeo provided both. Even put a literal "in your face" whipped cream birthday surprise on my daughters face. Food portions and presentation are very good. Sun prices are higher than work week, expected because of church crowd supply and demand. I did notice some of the tables/chairs that were blocked from use were transformed into seating throughout our visit. I'm sure they kept eyes on staying at an overall 50% capacity. I like the texture of their chips. Only hiccup we experienced was after a drink (water) spilled, the waiter came back and finished the cleanup we started but didn't replace chips/salsa/white salsa. Not a deal breaker, considering the quality of the entrees, comprised of hot, made to order Tex-Mexican faves prepared with fresh ingredients. I mean it's rocky mount and probably the most solid place you'll eat at in the area. Been visiting family here from NY for years and I'll say this spot has been consistent as long as we've been coming. Bean cheese dip... 10/10. Always a solid starter but this time my husband decided to order the jambalaya dip and it was the most pleasant surprise! Just enough shrimp and chorizo to catch the flavors but not so much that it overwhelmed the dish. If you want to make a meal out of it, order a side of rice or tortillas and make it a full dinner. We had a large group and everyone ordered something g different, no complaints all around but I'll mentioned what I ate and to my surprise how good it was. Tamales are not a featured item on the menu and they are such a hit or miss but these were great! The nice smooth texture without being dry. I had low expectations simply because it's rare to find them good anymore and was so pleased with it I'll be ordering again soon! read more

Very busy place in a pretty good atmosphere. Got takeout here and picked up my order. Service was fair to good and fast. Only problem is I got the wrong order. My girl and I were hungry so we ended up eating it anyway though. Taste wasn't the best Mexican food I've had but good enough for a 3 overall. My favorite Mexican restaurant because it's the one place that has salsa for us folks that can't eat cilantro. There is a percentage of the population with a genetic reason that cilantro tastes like soap and no matter where I go, I can't enjoy the salsa. Definitely not authentic Mexican food BUT it's great amongst all the Mexican restaurants. I love the white sauce there for the chips, the prices are great, good alcohol, and I would definitely recommend the shrimp soup. Eight for a late lunch today. Everyone ordered a full plate of food.. except my friend. He ordered an appetizer. Four meals come out and are served. Five minutes later, two more. He looks around and notices two people remain. He returns to the kitchen and we watch as he serves three other tables their food. THREE! We ask... 'it's coming' Five more minutes and one meal is served. We ask... 'it's coming' TEN MINUTES LATER; he gets his appetizer. A chicken quesadilla 5" disc, folded over two tablespoons of shredded chicken and a bit of cheese sauce. That's it. No onions, no peppers, no sour cream. Sour cream requested and a FULL cup of it is served -- more sour cream than there was quesadilla! Everyone (else) enjoyed their meal, the food was enjoyed by those who got their plates and ate while it was hot. I (and others) believe the first bite is taken when everyone is served. I believe that the while the cook may be at fault it is ultimately the waiter's responsibility to serve the table -- fully and timely. read more

They accused my ID's of being fake and refused to serve me alcohol. I have an out of state drivers license and a military ID. They told me my drivers license looked fake under a special monitor. I got my license from the DMV. Then they wouldn't take the my military ID. I was treated like I was breaking the law. I just wanted a drink with dinner. I live their food but sadly will never return. read more

Terrible Service! I arrived there on a Friday evening and was escorted to the bar. I don't typically like sitting at bars because I don't drink but I figured, it was busy, and maybe since I was a party of 1, they'd like to save the booths and tables for larger parties. It wasn't a big deal so I sat at the bar waiting to be served. After 20 minutes, I still wasn't served and there was no bartender to ask for my order. A few friends text me that were in the area and they decided to come join me. So I asked if I could get a booth to the nearest waitress, she said sure! I went to the booth, friends arrived, and we ordered our food 15 minutes later. Well, our food didn't arrive until almost 30 minutes later. We ate and were ready for our checks. So at this point, it sounds like I'm exaggerating but we waited over 20 to 25 minutes just for our waiter to come ask if we wanted our checks. We literally watched our waiter (a young man) look at us several times while smiling, laughing and joking around with other customers. At this point, I'm saying to myself "He's not getting a tip." Finally, he comes over and hands us our checks. I go to the front to inform the manager and the manager says, "Well he's the only waiter we have over there and I tell him to hurry fast." I explained to the manager I understood and preceded to explain to the manager the rest of the story pertaining to my night there. The manager literally looked down and seemed to ignore me. Even the people that were with me noticed it. I always tip waiters and waitresses, however, that night I did not. I was more upset with the manager because he completely ignored the rest of my story and acted as if I didn't matter. When I left out, I thought to myself "Is it because the restaurant is full of about 50 to 60 white people and we were the only 3 black people?" I've heard stories of them mistreating African Americans at the restaurant. Either way, the service was terrible and the manager did not care to listen to my complaint in a respectful manner. Not only do I plan on not going back, but I will warn African Americans to stay clear of this place and once EL Rio opens back up, I'll be going there. read more

Stopped in to get some emergency Mexcian...Not bad - a lot of it tasted like it came frozen and then prepared. Again not to bad. Nothing stood out as really good , other than it was open and fixed some to go MEX read more

I love this place. I try to visit every week which means driving 45 minutes to get there but it's worth it. I highly recommend!!
