Tried this place for the 1st time yesterday. We went around lunch time. It wasn't busy at all and got good service. The chips were tasty but I didn't really care for their salsa. Kinda had a different taste and not hot at all. Other than that our food was hot and the servings were a good size. Just wished my taco shell was cooked a lil longer so it was crunchy. Have never been to this establishment but was told by my husband that he had eaten here before and that the food was good. So we decided eat here tonight which the restaurant had a total of 4 table and seemed to be slow due to the restaurant almost closing. When we were seated it took our waiter quite some time to great us and take our order plus when we specifically asked for no tomato's on my husbands dish due to him being allergic to tomato's they still added tomato's on his order. The food was not sent back due to my husband and I being hungry and it taking some time for the waiter to check in on his tables, so he ate around it. This wasn't what made the experience absolutely upsetting to me but when the time came to pay for our meal the card machine that they use went down and we sat waiting for over 20minutes for them trying to fix the card reader. The manager on duty didn't even come to the table to let us know that the reader was non operational for the day but the waiter did and that they tried everything so they are only accepting cash which was a problem because my husband and I only had card. The waiter even suggested that we leave our debt card with them over night until they fix the problem to charge us which is something I haven never been asked or even suggested but found it such of a bad experience from start to finish. So in order for us to be able to pay for our meal my husband had to cash app the waiter so we were able to get our card back. Will not be returning nor recommending anyone to go here till they get better training on their systems or reliable system and better customer service with guest. read more

I have to say the food has much improved over my last visit several years ago. I have had El Rodeo food delivered twice now and I've been happy both times. The enchilada sauce is exquisite, a pure chili gravy and not that tomato kind. They pack their cheese enchiladas with plenty of cheese. Their beans have made a HUGE improvement. The flavor now is salty goodness with just enough creaminess with whole bean ratio. The shredded beef quesadilla was incredible. Their tacos have improved also, now having a much more flavorful meat than before. Kudos to the chefs for the changes in the menu. read more

Went in to an almost empty restaurant was asked if a table was ok I said no I prefer a booth waiters response was "are you kidding I guess you'll have to wait". I said ok that's fine he walked up to the cashier area and told his manager he wouldn't serve me I was being rude. So I walked up nicely and said I apologize didn't mean to sound rude we just prefer a booth and don't mind waiting . Cashier told his manager he wasn't serving us and not "fu**ing dealing with this shit". I stated I'm a nice person I am nice in general we'd just prefer a booth and can wait. Waiter totaled his receipts for the day and proceeded to argue with the manager telling him about all the bs he had to deal with working there. Waiter left the manager alone I helped him clear the tables so he could serve incoming guests and we left. I've been coming to this place for over a decade so sad to see it go downhill so much!! Just want to clarify, the manager tried to salvage the situation. Started cleaning tables after his only employee left cussing at him. He obviously cared about the business . Everybody and their raggedy mama rants and raves about how great Castillo's restaurant is and by all means.... they cool. BUT with capitals! This place right here in my opinion and my opinion matters because I have an Aunt by the name of Juanita and we all know anybody who has a Tia Juanita knows how Mexican food should taste and trust me I was raised on it I should know! This place reminds me of great home cooking. The meat was freshly cooked the oil used to deep fry didn't taste old. I was very pleased with the overall food, and presentation. The plates came out hot and great looking we could wait to dive in. The location is rather dull the restaurant itself isn't fancy or decorated it's plain but they always say don't judge a book by its cover. Went there today on a Sunday for lunch. The facilities are decent. Service was very quick. And actually... Service was the only good thing about the entire visit. I had read reviews on yelp which were fairly good so decided to try. Being Mexican myself, I have pretty decent expectations when going out to eat Mexican food.... Id say I'm able to tell just by the look of the food whether it's authentic or catered toward the Caucasian crowd. With that said.... There is absolutely nothing authentic about this restaurant. Salsa tastes and looks like its out of a can. Ordered shrimp tacos combo. 2 tacos come with 4 small blandly season shrimp in each. There is no special sauce that is usually served on shrimp tacos. No taste to them at all! Beans come with melted yellow cheese on top (big sign of un-authentic food.) My husband ordered chicken mole plate. And a soda. The mole didn't even taste like mole.... But instead tasted like something out of a can. Bland and no flavor at all. To top it all off.... Our horrible meal came out to $30. Ridiculous waste of money. We will not be returning. I'm tired of reading raving reviews on Mexican food where the restaurant is catering towards Caucasians that have no idea what real Mexican food is supposed to taste like. We stopped by this place on a Yelp whim for lunch on Sunday and I'm very glad I did. The salsa was great and chips fresh. The waiter brought us a spicier salsa just to try, and it was very tasty. I got the Chile Colorado and it was pretty amazing. I expect a lot from Mexican restaurants and am often disappointed by many who make it more like mole or just throw red sauce on cubed beef. This stuff is the real deal. Beef was tender and is just marinating in this Chile Colorado. I want to marinate in it, too. Rice and beans are pretty basic and the tortillas are not homemade. That's the only negative if you ask me, but I don't eat a whole lot of tortillas so I'm okay with that. The bf had Seafood Enchiladas, one with green sauce and one with white sauce. I didn't get to taste either because by the time I took a break from eating my delicious food, he was scraping his plate clean. So it's safe to say he liked it a lot. The service was great. We seated promptly and then accommodated when we asked to move tables(the bf has a light sensitivity these days). Super friendly and we didn't have to wait long to order and then receive our food. I have a new favorite Mexican restaurant. There are many good ones and a few great ones in the Fresno-Clovis area. El Rodeo is close enough to my house to walk, but I'm not sure I want to walk home when I'm feeling so full and satisfied. I had my usual Mexican lunch of taco and enchilada, and they were both delicious. The food was very hot (temperature). The shredded beef enchilada was easy to cut with a fork, which is often not the case. The bottom of the taco gave out half way through, but I had a fork so no problem. Next time I will try the chile releno to see if this place is good across the menu. That dish is often bad at good restaurants, must be a challenge to do them right. Can El Rodeo do it? Lets start with the pros first. Order was correct, portions were great loved the pico de gallo, guac was creamy. Shredded beef taco salad was huge and I liked it came with no rice. The beef was good. Chips were crunchy. Chicken tacos were also good size with lots of meat and rice was decent. Chimichangas from appetizer plate was delish. As for the cons. The salsa looked good but tasted like marinara sauce it was just weird! Chicken was juicy but lacked flavor. Taquitos were a little over cooked. Overall besided the horribly weird salsa we enjoyed our meal. Sure there could be more flavor to some things but I would come back again. read more
