Four of us had a succulent meal at El Rodaballo on Sunday, June 27, 2021. The atmosphere was inviting and soothing, with its beautiful indoor design and cool blue tones, including at least a half dozen Murano ceiling lamps. A colorful fish tank and lit wine refrigerator (floor to ceiling) shows that the owner has paid attention to details. Ample parking is available on site.
We were seated at least one hour before our reservation time, although the place was packed. The daily menu including creative appetizers, at least five different fish entrées, and numerous meat dishes. We had a succulent appetizer of cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig) and another of manchego cheese croquettes. Both were delicious. I ordered mahi-mahi steak with an escargot sauce and grilled vegetables that was not only a large portion, but tasted fantastic. Others ordered cabrito (goat), done in a traditional Puerto Rican way, as well as a special-order fish-and-calamari paella for someone who is allergic to shellfish. Most of the dishes were done to perfection; only one of the cabrito plates came with too many bones and not enough meat, but that is to be expected when eating cabrito, as all Puerto Ricans know from family dinners past.
Service was courteous and efficient. Prices were reasonable. Especially noteworthy were the wine list prices, which seemed to be only 25-35% over list price. During this visit to Puerto Rico I've dined at some restaurants that were not nearly as good but were much more expensive.
Although in Miami, where I live, there are wonderful restaurants, few can display the balance of ambiance, food, service, and value that El Rodaballo provided on this occasion. I look forward to returning to Puerto Rico soon and stopping once again at this wonderful restaurant. read more
