Love the wet burritos and the bar is a good spot to hang out and grab a drink. The food is really good,and the ambiance is nice inside and at the bar area. We usually stop here on work trips, and are never disappointed with the food. The waitresses take a bit to come to the table and if you're at the bar eating at the side tables you'd think they forgot about ya or don't wanna make money ( it's tough to get a refill). Not our first time eating at El Rey. We had lunch on Friday, February 14, 2024 at approximately 1300 hrs. Restaurant was not super busy. Empty tables were clean and ready for the next customer. Floors were swept, no food on the floors. Women's restroom was clean and fully stocked. When seated, the waitress serves a small bowl of salsa and warm tortilla chips. It was a rainy, windy and cold day so I ordered caldo de res to warm me up. I immediately noticed the caldo was lacking cabbage and green beans, which are standard ingredients in traditional caldo. Nonetheless, the caldo served at El Rey was served piping hot and it had good flavor. I added a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a big drizzle of the chile oil and it was perfect for my liking. The meat was beef shank, which needed a bit more cooking time but nothing that would change my rating. The bowl was a generous portion and served with a cup of Mexican rice and choice of corn (homemade) or flour tortillas. I chose the homemade corn tortillas. I would order the caldo again. My dad ordered the Milanesa de Res. Best description, kinda like chicken fried steak, sans gravy. Meat was tender and breading crispy. Everything was cooked to perfection. Customer service was on point and final bill was accurate. I highly recommend El Rey for a nice meal out or an alcoholic beverage. Went to have lunch today after church went to El Rey restaurant I ordered two tacos of birria 4.99 each. The girl charges me two dollars more when I go pay for it. She says oh well they're not 4.99 no more they're 5.99now got the menu says 4.99 here. She says that the prices are subject to change, believe me. I will not go to that restaurant again. Relleno's are the best; service is terrible. They have a sign saying, "This is not fast food", but waiting 25 minutes just to check out is ridiculous. Worst was the bill; 1st they didn't provide an itemized receipt, then after requesting it, there was a 3% credit card fee, a 4% automatic gratuity, plus a recommended gratuity of 15, 18, or 20% additional gratuity. Family dinner was planed to come here since it's something new to try in town. Beer selection was great. Our party of four ordered beers/mixed drinks and food at the bar counter. Food was okay. Tradition in our family dictates that our matriarch choose where she would like to have Mother's Day breakfast and El Rey was her choice. We now know better than to choose to return to this establishment. We walked in promptly at 10 am, were greeted, and ushered to the patio area, where we requested to be due to our large party (12). The walk through the restaurant was pleasant. Beautiful brick walls (a nod to its probable historical significance) outline the right hand side with a small corridor separating the dining space from the bar. The bar was outlined with numerous televisions. The patio was quite bare with dark wood lacquered tables, strung canopies, and a CMU wall surrounding the outdoor area. The hostess sat us down and the waiting game commenced. In 15-20 minutes, not one employee asked us for our drink order or if we had been helped. We noticed a gentlemen walk by twice without paying us any attention. After the wait, one of my party walked inside to find a waitress. He returned to tell us that the employee he spoke with claimed that they didn't realize we were outside. Strike 1. Second strike happened when we attempted to order a mimosa, one that we called to confirm was going to be available for Mother's Day. It wasn't. Once all drink orders were completed, we waited another 20 minutes to receive them. The Bloody Mary (which took an additional 10 minutes to arrive) was watered down. We ordered a Cadillac Margarita instead (which seemed to be a bit better). The blueberry mojito was no better than the Bloody. The beer was good at least despite having coffee that was also extremely weak (also watered down). At this point, our waitress takes our food order and turns to leave. However, instead of leaving to turn in our order, her cell phone seemed far more important as we noticed her texting and proceeding to make a phone call. It would be 45 minutes before we saw our food. Mind you, we were the only patrons outdoors in a shaded area that seated possibly 50 people. The food came out in 5 minute increments with our matriarch waiting 55 minutes to get her meal (and it was incorrect). Strike 3. The food that did arrive was luke warm at best and bland. It was not worth the time we spent waiting for it, nor was it what we expected for a Mother's Day meal..what strike is this? What was most upsetting about this experience is that our waitress was quickest bringing out our check and the receipts for our signature rather than providing a great service for the 5 mothers at our table. Guess the roses the mothers received was supposed to make up for forgetting about our table, watered mixed drinks, and a near hour wait for bland food. Min after 20min we get our chips... then she 1 margarita and my daughter said we wanted 2 oh ok and she I wil get your waters... then bring the second margarita and we are still waiting for our waters and we ate all the chips and salsa....after maybe another 20- 30 min we finally get our waters and I said we are ready to order...so if you read we did alot of waiting we will not be dining there any time soon.
