We didn't have a great experience here. This is a small Mexican joint with only a few tables both in and outside. Our service was slow and a bit frustrating, but they did only have two people working so semi understandable. Unfortunately the pork in our tacos was overcooked and very dry. Was walking around aimlessly in Madrid and decided to stop in. What a cute place with the most friendly staff, especially my server, Ole. The tacos were delicious. The meat was tender in both and I liked the cochinitas so much that I ordered a second one. The green sauce also made it even better. We came for dinner on a very busy Saturday night where all restaurants nearby had a huge line outside but we got very lucky when we came into this restaurant. This restaurant is a little off the main street (I believe it's Gran Via) and it's a cozy yet fun restaurant. We got the guacamole to start with which was delicious, and I got a tamale and one of the veggie quesadillas and my fiance got 2 quesadillas and the secret taco which we're also very tasty. Our waiter was very welcoming and nice, and even gave us 2 shots of their margarita that we would have gotten if we hadn't already been drinking all night. It was a busy restaurant but our food still arrived pretty quickly and it definitely hit the spot. Wow what a gem in Madrid! This place is amazing simply put! We arrived just for some snacks and some drinks my husband was on the search for a Michelada and we found this place. I ordered a pina colada he got his drink and kids got their drinks super fast. We ordered some nachos, tacos and flatutas. Food was out of this world amazing hot fresh and so much flavor! We were the only people in the restaurant at the time and our server was great checked in on us and so did the chef not sure if she is the owner of this restaurant but she was great ! We wanted a change from the wonderful tapas we'd been enjoying and WOW El Rey did more than that! Cute decor and a cozy little space. Amazing staff, charming us and making sure we had what we needed. And the food! Definitely get the tamales. We would have eaten a dozen each, if we had belly for it. The tacos were delicious and fresh and wonderful. My boyfriend and I came here looking for a cheap, easy lunch and were pretty disappointed by this place, sadly because it got really good reviews on TripAdvisor and thought we would give it a shot. We got the tuna dip appetizer which was good, but definitely was just canned tuna with some added tomato and onion and hot sauce. The chips that came with it were straight from a bag from the store. Our tacos came out and I really disliked the chicken mole one, it was pretty much just a pile of mushy sauce, couldn't really find the chicken and I didn't like the taste. The pork ones were ok, but nothing special. I was sad about this spot because it seemed like a little authentic hole in the wall, and the gal working seemed sweet. It was definitely cheap, only €14 for 4 tacos and the tuna dip dish. However, I have had much better tacos and was pretty underwhelmed with the food here. read more

Very good place for tacos! They make TJ style (street) tacos which have small tortillas but they over-fill them. Tacos cost between EUR 1.50 and 2. Just left establishment and pretty upset that after 1.5 hours our original order was not fulfilled. Got to El Rey around 8:45 PM looking forward to try some Mexican food after being in Madrid for a few days.....that spicy spirit calls unto you in mysterious and profound ways. Waitress was friendly and promptly took our drink and food order. Our horchatas (rice drink) were definitely not homemade and very much powder based. The only good thing about the horchatas were that they came out within the first five minutes of ordering. The place is very small and with only a handful of patrons...5 to be exact.....we waited and waited and waited and waited. Finally after 45 minutes, we received our appetizer of queso fundido with rajas. There was plenty to be desired here as it was melted cheddar that quickly hardened, topped with slices of poblano and onions, along with kernels of corn. 10 minutes later, we finally get ONLY a portion of our order. In case you're not keeping track, this is 55 minutes after we placed our order!!! We, party of 2, ordered 3 tacos each....2 cochinito pibil, 2 tinga de pollo and 2 carnitas. We only got 4, sans carnitas. Waitress acknowledged it wasn't full order and would be bringing the rest out soon. What about the taste you ask? Well, the cochinita pibil was really flavorful though the corn tortillas it was on didn't do it justice. Can't say the same of the chicken. You will see that they use THE MICROWAVE quite a bit here. Tortillas were dry and brittle, which made the taco fall apart instantly, and not in the way where juices are running down your fingers, consuming you in Mexican ecstasy my friends. More like when your chubby cousin really wants to look good in a skinny Aeropostale T-shirt but nothing is held in. Love you primo!! We finally get our last two tacos, but what is this??? More tinga de pollo tacos?!?! And not my favorite of the two I must say! Waitress took the tacos back and while she and the "cook" tried to sort it out, we decided to cancel the last of the order as it was after 10 pm at this point. No apologies, and in fact the "cook" seemed offended we cancelled as she said she was about to heat up the tacos....meaning tortillas in the microwave. 1 star for the waitress who really was friendly and another for the cochinita pibil. read more

Hidden gem! We took a chance on this place being that there were no prior reviews, we were pleased. We had the taco nacho ( very good, probably the best one) taco al pastor, chicken tinga taco and carnitas taco. Friendly service, kinda hard to find with it being off the main drag but not far from the opera. We also had the chili margaritas. We will go back when in Madrid. read more
