Love local places where the owner has skin in the game. Great place for some good Mexican food. The place was busy the entire time we were there. The staff was very efficient getting people sat and orders in and food served quickly. There were 3 servers a bus person 2 food runners and a host plus kitchen stall all working together. Very good meal here. We were looking for a 'non-chain' option while passing thru on I-75. This was about 4 miles off the beaten path, in an unassuming older building on a quaint town square. Diagonal street parking. The whole place was very clean (my OCD husband even commented that their ceiling fans were clean ). Our food was all excellent - great salsa, cheese dip that was a nice consistency and stuck to the chips (I hate when it is too runny!). We each had a burrito - mine was grilled chicken with peppers and onions and topped with cheese sauce - yum! Plenty of excellent chicken inside. Hubby had a ground beef with red sauce, lettuce, tomato, sour cream - also very good. Our server was very pleasant and attentive without hovering - nice!! Keep in mind the area when trying to decide where to eat. This place is a small Mexican restaurant. It's visible from the street and has parking closeby. We came on a Saturday lunch and it wasn't crowded but there were people around us. We didn't order any margaritas but the tables around us did and seemed to enjoy themselves. We ordered combo items each and they both came with a ton of food. If you're getting a combo, don't do an appetizer because it's a lot of food for the price ($10-15). Mine had hangar steak and they don't ask how you want it cooked so they just bring it out well pretty much but it wasn't chewy. It was salty but the flavor was really good. Service wasn't too great but the place isn't big so you can kinda flag people down if you need to. For this area, it's 4 stars. If it was in Atlanta, I'd say 3. read more

If I could give no stars I would. The only thing that was right and tasted decent was my sweet tea. My chips was uncooked, my cheese dip and all of my meal except for the shredded chicken was stale and old and bitter. My cheese dip has been sitting out for a while it tastes like. On top of all that, it seemed like every waitress here was new. No one could get my fiancé's order right after bringing out bits of his food 2 times. I was just visiting Atlanta with Michelle, when I came across this place and got the chicken marcianas, which is basically chicken over cheesy rice. He gave our food to the wrong table, then took two passes before remembering to bring the flour tortillas for the fajitas because they were given to the wrong table. We are locals and eat el pueblito very often. It's pretty much the only place we get Mexican food from. If you're looking for amazing yummy food, this is the place to go. Everyone has their hometown Mexican restaurant that they go to religiously - this is mine. I grew up going to El Pueblito or "el pubs" as the locals call it, two or three times a week and look forward to having it as soon as I arrive in Calhoun to visit my parents even as an adult. The waitstaff knows their regulars' orders by heart, and it has a great hometown atmosphere. Definitely stop by and ask for Armando as your waiter if you're traveling through. Don't let the looks fool you, this place has some serious good eats. Had the carnitas tacos - 3 huge (for street tacos) tacos for $7.95. The carnitas is off the hook. I'm assuming the corn tortillas are housemade based on their irregularity and just how dang good they were. I was disappointed by the bland salsa that came out with the chips, but that no worries on that front either. Asked if they had any other salsa, maybe something with a little more kick, and I got an appreciative look followed moments later by some serious sauce chock-full of pepper seeds and spices. I hadn't been to this restaurant in about 10 years. (I used to request it so much in high school that I think my family and friends became sick of it.) Out of nostalgia, I decided to go there last night to catch up with a friend I hadn't seen in just about as long. El Pueblito has had a makeover. The walls have been repainted with a mottled burgundy and white. The floor is tiled. The restaurant somehow seems bigger, but the bathroom for each sex still has room for only one at a time. The menu, too, was different, much more extensive. I was really happy to see shrimp burritos and shrimp tacos on there. The Quesadilla Texana also looked good. I chose the shrimp burritos. The burritos were really just shrimp rolled into a flour tortilla topped with a red sauce. On the side was some lettuce, sour cream, spicy pico de gallo, and guacamole. My dish was good, but I would try something else if I went back. Also, the server brought my iceless water in a GIGANTIC plastic cup, so I had plenty to drink. This all brings me to what knocked one star off an otherwise 5-star rating. When my friend and I went to pay at the cash register, the man was not pleasant at all. He had served us earlier and spoke English to me then, but when we paid, he refused to speak English. (I had asked him how to say a few things in Spanish while I was at the table, and he was more friendly then.) Unfortunately, I don't speak Spanish well, and I told him that...and he unsmilingly replied in espanol. So I left with a sour taste in my mouth, but not from anything on my plate. read more

El Pueblito has been a standby for many morning hangovers, long nights of dancing, and general munchie moments. My fave dish is the Huevos rancheros, but any of the steak tip dishes are fantastic as well! I also like that the chicken burritos have an almost a "pulled" chicken texture! Additionally, I could eat the guacamole dip for eternity. However, I find that the dishes are overly salty, perhaps prepared too quickly (and without much thought as to seasoning). I've never gotten out of here without a wicked case of heartburn. I could give El Pueblito a better rating if the ingredients were of higher quality and the recipes were better planned. I love Mexican food and have eaten in 100s of Mexican restaurants, especially now living in Los Angeles and having lived in Miami. My parents moved to Calhoun years ago and there isn't much of anything in that town...at all. It's all fast food. So thank GOD for the Mexican restaurants in this town, and El Pueblito is by far the best, even in comparison to "real" cities it's great food. It wasn't always THIS good, but recently while visiting Calhoun in the last 2 years this place has stepped up it's game in a major way. The menu is more extensive and the quality of the food is much better. It's always busy, but it's literally the only place in Calhoun worth getting a meal. The staff is always friendly and the service is pretty fast, my only complaint is some of the customers are loud and obnoxious and have little social grace. Whatever happened to Southern Charm? Calhoun has none, it's not a Southern Charm kind of place it's more like a red neck cesspool. Enjoy! read more

We came to this restaurant with my in-laws for lunch. It was the first visit for all of us. Hubby and I had the El Suprimo (I think that was the name of it....pork with green chili and a simple pork burrito, with rice, beans and a guacamole salad). MIL had chicken tacos and FIL had steak fajitas. Each of us very much enjoyed our food tremendously, but hubby and I were nuts about the pork dish....it was so good! The service was very good, the place was clean and it was very affordable. We don't live in Calhoun, but the in-laws do and they will be back. We used to love this place. Service was always good and same goes for the food. The last couple of visits have proven otherwise. Last night was the final straw. It was nearly an hour and a half before we received our food. We had to end up getting everything to go because it made us late for our concert. Tried to get the waitress to compensate us with a discount which failed. We finally found the manager on duty and she was unsympathetic and chalked it up to being short a cook. Fast forward to eating the food a couple of hours later and it was terrible. Horrible experience with a team of people who don't even care enough to make it right. read more

My first visit. The food was ok. The service just so so. The reason for 1 star is this place is extremely stingy with there salsa. You get a thimble size cup with your chips. So small you have to break your chips in half to get and salsa on you chip. When I asked for more/extra salsa I got another thimble cup of salsa. If you like Mexican food like I do and SALSA on your Mexican food like I do then this place isn't for you. Nothing kills a Mexican Restaurant more than being STINGY with there salsa.
