    forty two to the stacks

El Porto is our El Beacho. Wifey and I call it home every Fried Day afternoon. It's a quaint little stretch of well-maintained beach situated between Rosecrans and The Stacks of the Chevron refinery. Surfers rely on its dependable break - which also beckons boogie boarders, skim boarders and bodysurfers. When there's a swell, you can literally count hundreds of surfers on this beach, making it tricky for body surfers. Families of all ages love this beach for its sprawling sand mass, lifeguard support and clean restrooms. In fact everyone loves this beach, save DOGS, whom are NOT ALLOWED. We make camp at Lifeguard Stand #42 which, in addition to us, you'll also find the Snack Shack. The Chicken Kabob plates are delish'. You can RENT BOARDS and beach chairs here as well. HEADS UP; the parking situation has become wonky during COVID. The parking entrance @ 45th & Highland (the coastal road) is now manned by (private?) security, which sets a road block and allows in only x-amount of vehicles - first come, first served. This creates a logjam forcing people to crowd the Chevron Station on the corner...often indignant souls awaiting their "turn" in this frenzied makeshift queue. I'm sure the owners of the Chevron station really appreciate this. It's gotten a little intense a couple of times - and yet, at other times, we've driven right in...so there's no rhyme or reason to it, including "when to arrive"...sorry folks, can't help ya'. I will say this, once you're in, the meters allow a lavish 5 HOUR LIMIT (credit card payable). El Beacho is amazing. Peaceful. Chill. Clean as a whistle. It's a great spot to Staycation in West L.A..

This local beach is located in front of the El Porto Neighborhood of northern Manhattan Beach Pier, which I walked until the end of the paved pedestrian side road, approximately 1.5 miles one way. The waves in the area are often times larger than nearby beaches so it's well-known to the local surfers, the volleyball courts are also available, and biking and skating on the paved path are popular too.

There is a little neighborhood called El Porto and they have a beach. It is located in North Manhattan Beach between 45th Street & Rosecrans Avenue. To the north of 45th Street is the Chevron Oil Refinery. This is Manhattan Beach's second and lesser populated beach. Most people go near the Manhattan Beach Pier area. This beach is protected under the State Parks system. To enter the parking lot for this beach, you need to go West on 45th Street. There's only parking slots to the left and right down a long area. All are metered and there is a 5hr maximum limit. The parking lot's hours are from 6:15AM to 8PM daily. Between the parking lot and the beach is a bike path called Marvin Braude Bike Trail. The trail goes from Torrance Beach to Will Rogers State Beach. This 22 mile mostly cemented trail is mostly along the beach, but in some places it will take you near a road to avoid places like King Harbor and Marina del Rey. Here are a few things you can do at El Porto Beach: Surfing, Volleyball, Biking, Skating, Walking, Running, Swimming, Paddle Boarding, Boogie Boarding. If you like to surf, there is an online webcam for El Porto as well as surf reports. Restrooms with showers are located throughout the beach. El Porto does have Lifeguards on duty. No fires are permitted on the beach and dogs are also not allowed. If you get hungry or thirsty, there is a Surf Food Stand near 41st Street. The bike bath goes right behind it. There are tables and chairs right on the beach (sand)! Anywhere you eat where seagulls are present, keep your food guarded!! I have seen them take food from inside backpacks! If you want to rent bikes and boards are rented from this area, too. I don't venture onto the sand much these days, but when my children were young, we used to come here often. My hubby would boogie board and the rest of us would play in the sand and water. I remember we would have tar on our feet from walking through the sand and our towels would have tar on them as well. This spot is really great for surfers! We just came here last night to watch the sunset (from the car). It was beautiful!

big fans of this little enclave since we live in el segundo. we (used to) frequent the local eateries... Fishbar, El Tarasco, Panchos up until Covid. the beach itself we don't take advantage of as much as we would like. parking gets tough in the summers and the trek back UP the hill at Rosecrans was always a pain after a full beach day. especially with the kiddos in tow. but, the vibe is always easy going and cool. will continue to visit.

We love coming through here, not for the sand or the water, but for the view, bar and grub hopping. Coming through on an off-season midweek late lunch, we weren't surprised to find no crowds - which we kinda liked. (We've been here many times, mostly during weekend peak times and offff...) We didn't miss that at all. There are tons of cute shops, eateries (many who are very dog friendly), and fantastic ocean views. If you feel like getting steps in, I suggest walking to the end of the pier and back. Parking is hit and miss. A challenge during the weekends, but plenty. Street and structure available. You can pay with cards, coins or through an app. It never gets old coming through. We shall return over and over again.

Myself, along with other beachgoers, alerted the beach lifeguards about the situation but nothing was done to rectify the issue. I saw another member of the public notify a lifeguard and they were laughed off a bit. When I stepped forward to alert the same lifeguard about the issue, he just chuckled and said, "Yea, we know about it." Maybe it's just me, but I would not be laughing about what could be a serious situation with bird carcasses washing up every couple feet. The sand was also littered with a lit of trash and debris, adding to the uncomfortable situation. I would recommend staying away from the Hermosa Beach shoreline for awhile.

They also have a key to the bathroom, which is around the corner. Even though we were 20 minutes early, they let us get on the water bike after a quick instruction. Riding on the water bikes was really fun! We rode around the bay and the water was choppy sometimes but as you get inside the bay, the water is calmer. A trick is that if you feel the water is too choppy, start paddling - the water will calm down with the pedaling. There are several boats around which provided live music for us. The bike has two cup holders and a front container to put your phones and small stuff in. We had a great time. They share a parking lot with nearby restaurants which offer 3 hours of free parking. That is a huge plus for something near the beach! We will be back next time to try a glow ride.
