This is a true little hole-in-the-wall spot. It's very small, with only about four tables, and it was pretty busy when I arrived. I planned on dining in, so I grabbed a table. There was one gentleman working the register and helping the tables, and when I noticed people coming in and forming a line at the register, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to order at the table or up front. So I got up to place my order. Well, while I was ordering, two people sat at the table I had planned to sit at. Long story short, we ended up sharing the table complete strangers and it actually turned into such a nice experience. They told me they've been coming here for years and started telling me about different things on the menu. They actually own their own torta spot too, which I now plan on visiting! After seeing what they ordered and hearing their recommendations, I already know I need to come back and try more. I ordered a carne asada wet burrito, and it was really good. But one of the things that really stood out to me was that they make their tortillas by hand. You don't find that everywhere anymore, and I love finding places that still keep things traditional. They have a great variety of authentic Mexican dishes, the food was good, and everyone was very friendly. Sometimes the best food experiences happen in the smallest, most unexpected places and sometimes you even end up sharing a table with strangers. The restaurant itself has barely changed over the decades, which honestly never bothered me. What has bothered me is that in all those years, not once have I or my family ever truly felt welcomed there. No greeting. No acknowledgment. No appreciation. I tried not to let that stop me from supporting a small business, because as a small business owner myself, I understand how hard it is to survive and keep a business going. The day before Mother's Day, we stopped by to pick up food for my mother-in-law, who enjoys their soft carne asada tacos. When we walked in, Juventino was sitting on the bench. There was only one customer ahead of us. After that customer ordered, an employee handed another person a pickup order with what seemed like a forced smile -- but at least it was a smile. Then she answered the phone. We stood there for at least five minutes with absolutely no acknowledgment. Nothing. Finally, while the employee was still on the phone, I turned and said hello to Juventino. Only then were we acknowledged, and he smiled. It's amazing how something as simple as a smile or acknowledgment can completely change the atmosphere. When it was finally our turn, we ordered food for three people. Once our order was ready, Mia asked if I wanted salsa. I politely asked if it was possible to get four green salsas and one red salsa. Honestly, I fully expected her to tell me if there was an extra charge for additional salsa, and I was completely willing to pay for it. I also did not see any signs posted stating there would be an extra charge. Instead, she looked at me, walked to the kitchen, and handed me the order without saying anything, which naturally made me believe everything was included. To be clear, this was never about the money. I had already paid extra for two small guacamoles at $1.50 each because I wanted us to enjoy the meal. Had I been told that additional salsa cost extra, I would have gladly paid for it as well. When we arrived at my mother-in-law's house, the salsa order was wrong. Maybe to some people that sounds minor, but after years of feeling unwelcome, it honestly made me sad, frustrated, and unimportant as a customer. I called the restaurant, and Mia said she "didn't hear me." Then she handed the phone to her mother, who immediately told me that I had been rude and that her daughter was "a little girl" and that I had scared her. Her daughter is not a little girl. At some point, we need to stop making excuses for younger generations who lack basic customer service skills such as smiling, acknowledging customers, and saying "please" and "thank you." I will say that she did look presentable and professional in appearance, but kindness and hospitality matter just as much. What's disappointing is that there now appear to be three generations working there, yet no one ever seems happy to be there. No smiles. No warmth. No appreciation toward customers. The food is okay -- sometimes even good -- but never truly great. What keeps people loyal for decades is not just food. It's how you make people feel. Mr. Juventino, please take care of your employees. If they are unhappy, customers feel it immediately.
