We absolutely love El Monte ! The food is always amazing and the restaurant is so pretty now . Always a favorite of mine .

I got the Molcajete costilla and I eat a lot of Mexican food all over the south. We travel all over Mexico as well and eat at hole in the wall Mexican restaurants all over North America. This was the best Mexican food I have had in the state of Tennessee. Service was great and the food was the best. You need to go if in white bluff or even make the trip and go. read more

Been coming here for years and ordering mainly takeout. They recently opened in a new location/building and it's so nice and pretty. But the customer service has tanked. I have ordered the same few dishes for my family every visit for years and it is suddenly (since the move) never correct. Every week I speak to the "owner" who "fixes it" but then every week he tells me how this is the first time he's encountered these issues. I am pretty sure the staff all lie to me and tell me they are the owner when I ask to talk to someone. Side note, they provide the tiniest cups of salsa ever. We've eaten here twice now. The first time was about two years ago and we were not the least bit impressed. Food was very bland and even the salsa was like watered down tomato sauce with stale chips. It was so bad we vowed to never go back but then a band we knew was performing there recently and we decided to go to support them and were also optimistically hoping that with their recent remodel maybe the food would be better too. Not!! I ordered the taco platter and my husband ordered a burrito. I was disappointed that my taco shell tasted like soggy cardboard when I had asked for crispy flour. And the meat seemed almost fake and watered down in consistency but I was hungry. Anyway, I hadn't taken more than three bites of my first taco when I felt a long hair in my mouth. And I'm talking already half way down my throat, gagging me, long.... Well, obviously my meal was ruined but for the sake of salvaging our evening I tried to make the best of it and focused on the rice and beans and chips and salsa. Also, we had decided to just have water with our dinner and I don't know where it came from but it tasted absolutely horrible! My husband said it tasted like sewer water based on what he knew sewage smells like and I had to agree. Anyway....I hadn't planned on saying anything about the hair but when our waitress brought us our bill I opted to nicely mention it more as an fyi so she could let the cooks know.... So imagine our shock when she burst out laughing! Not a single I'm sorry or any assurance that she'd communicate this to their establishment.... Just burst into laughter and then put the electronic bill under my nose waiting for me to select a tip amount. I thought hell no! She may not have prepared my food but responding the way she did was a slap in the face so I promptly selected the "no tip" option and told her it was because of that. And to think I was just going to keep quiet, smile, give a dutiful tip and chalk it up to another disappointing dinner. At least now we can honestly say we will not be back...ever! read more

This place is great! Their Mexican tacos with shrimp were delicious. I wish there were a few more pieces of shrimp, but they were perfectly seasoned. The green salsa was also great, and they make their flour tortillas warm and soft. You also can't beat their 2-4-1 margaritas. This place had terrible service and low quality food. The servers had a hard time understanding english, took forever to get drink/food orders and had to be reminded about orders they did not bring out after serving everyone else at the table. The food was not even close to authentic, more like a dolled up Taco Bell. Most items had ground beef not carne asada. The chicken was dry and food was luke warm or cold. If I could give a negative stars I would. The staff acted like we were a bother when we came in. I ordered a taco supreme. When I got my food the meat was cold and just tasted like fried hamburger meat. It was so greasy that I could squeeze my taco and the grease just dripped out of it. Quite a pleasant surprise to find Mexican food this good in a town this size. In Middle Tennessee. Light and crispy chips and very good salsa. Decent sized portions, especially for the "extra" items like crema, guacamole, and pico de gallo. It's not fancy, just a good, basic Mexican joint that offers up chips and salsa as soon as you walk in and cheap margaritas that are perhaps a tad too green... but you don't question it. Is anyone ever a "gourmand" when it comes to Mexican places in Tennessee? I don't think so. You can pay $9 for fajitas, and they are not relevantly different from $12 fajitas, or $14 fajitas, etc. Kitsch, absolutely. They have a nice open patio where sometimes when I've been there had live music, not sure if it was intentional or a patron who embibed and decided to start up a song or two. No matter. Service, well, it's OK. Do they speak English? Sorta. Are they in a hurry? Probably not. If you arrive at 8:45 pm like my friend and I did on this last visit they might be trying to close. They'll serve you, but start stacking up the other patio chairs as you are drinking and chatting after you eat.
