This was a surprising gem! Tucker away in a strip mall, unassuming appearance, but really good food. I read other reviews where one said the salsa was watery and one said it was spicy, I'm here to say yes to both. And it did t matter, it was pretty good with fresh made chips. I had the chicken chimichanga and it was great. The chicken was so flavorful. My wife had the taco & enchilada plate. The beef taco is really quite good. It was a lot more flavorful than you'd think, it isn't just barely flavored ground beef, it's got a punch of flavor. I didn't like the margarita but my wife did. On the whole it was a great lunch, very well priced, worth every bit of it. read more

Of the three Mexican Restaurants in LaPlace, El Mexicano is the most affordable and most authentic. Unlike the other two, the lighting inside is bright enough to read the menu and the temperature inside is comfortable. Restaurant to the east of this place is so cold all year round that I had to wear a jacket. El Mexicano has good food. The service is fast and friendly. read more

Like most mexican places, El Mexicano has its special dishes. Their beans and enchiladas are really good. They use a mixture of white and dark chicken, so if you don't like dark meat, keep this in mind. The service is stellar, the building is just run down, but clean. read more

The El Mexicano is a restaurant in LaPlace. As you enter the place you are welcomed by beautiful Mexican art displayed on the wall. The menu offers a wide variety of delicious courses. We had lunch and the ingredients were fresh and of very high quality. Our waiter was a charming middle-aged woman. This was my husbands pick we had not been here in years. Now that there are a couple of Hispanic places around town you would think they would of stepped up. Service is fast but it taste just like eating at Taco Bell. Food taste all canned or bought. We ordered number one and nineteen on the lunch menu. It was pretty tasteless. My husbands Chile Rellenos was like a mushy dip. My dinner had a taco that was mystery ground meat lettuce tomato I guess I am used to taqueria tacos with fresh corn shells cilantro and onions. The avocado was tasteless. The tostada had retried beans but again no flavor. The enchiladas were the best part. The staff was very polite. I can remember years ago this place was always filled for lunch. I hope they work out their problems. read more

Great little Mexican joint. Food is consistently good, feels authentic, and is inexpensive. Service is quick and quiet. They do take out but don't have any printed up menus - I almost always get a chicken quesadilla and beans - the cheese they use is really tasty. I only ever come here for lunch - they do dinner, but I can't imagine eating that here. Atmosphere is lacking a bit... Miles ahead of El Paso or La Carretera!!! read more

I see I am the second person to review El Mexicano and the first in year. Kate seemed to think El Mexicano deserved 5 stars. I guess compared to prison food..... El Mexicano is located in the back of the plaza with "Bulls Corner" Restaurant. Its hard to see from Airline. Lots of parking. I have had lunch here several times over the past couple of years with no ill effects and decided to try it for dinner last night. Pretty basic interior, usual booths and tables, some what dated and drab. it's bigger than it looks from the outside. There were maybe a dozen diners at 6:00 on Saturday evening. Immediate and friendly service. Chips and salsa were on the table seconds after sitting down. Glasses, empty bottles were attended to quickly. Nothing too exciting on the menu, the usual Mexican restaurant offerings. Prices are very reasonable. We had the chicken enchiladas, rice, beans and cheese quesadillas. Servings are large, more than I could finish. Having said all that, the food is, in a word, boring. If you need a second word, bland is also accurate. The enchiladas had a lot of shredded chicken (thankfully, no chicken cubes), but not a lot of taste. Rice was a little dry but fine with the beans. The quesadillas were cheese whiz unremarkable. I might be back for a quick lunch, but only if I am driving by. Dinner, drinks and tip for two was $30. read more

Very good food. You always get your food fast all of the food is cooked fresh no frozen meat or frozen food items.

If you like authentic mexican this is the place for you. The outside view and the inside decor is simple. The food is of great value. Kids meals are less than $5 and include rice and beans. Kids can choose from a soft or crunchy taco, enchilada, or burrito. Adult meals are mostly between $6 and $8. A family of four can eat for less than $30. The salsa is good and, for dessert, their fried ice cream is great and is only $2.50. The wait staff help each other out are very efficient and attentive. Overall, a great value. read more
