The food was ok. Just a preference judgment but I prefer the food to be fresh and not sitting on a warming plate for days and it shows. The food was reasonably priced, and my husband said the margarita were very good. Service was good. The dining area could really use an update notably rundown or at least needs a good scrubbing down. The restroom smelled of urine and could definitely use a good too to bottom cleaning. read more

Located in rural Missouri, this restaurant is likely not "on your way" to your next errand. However, it's surprisingly good considering how far it is from the border. I had lunch here today with two co-workers. My meal was really bland. I had the #5 Lunch Special (a burrito, a taco, and refried beans). The beef filling for both the taco and burrito were generous, but lacked any spicing or flavor. I was expecting a lot more heat and spice to my meal. Fortunately there were plenty of chips to eat with the refried beans. I had heard much about El Maguey and how good it was. I expect some spice and a little heat in my Mexican food. Food was less than sub par. The staff was looking at their phones more than waiting on people (us). Margaritas were small and never offered water to drink which made the lousy food even harder to swallow. If you have ever liked Mexican food before, don't go there. The atmosphere itself is perfect for groups with plenty of room and they are very willing to make accommodations. The food itself is delicious and quickly served. After eating waaaaay too many grilled cheese sandwiches on our midwestern trip, the vegetarian in my family was THRILLED to see an actual Vegetarian section on a menu. Thank you El Maguey. Generally speaking, El Maguey is like most restaurants of this type outside of the Southwest--quick service, staffed with native spanish speakers, big menu with all the typical Mexican classics, probably not spicy enough for hardcore fans of authentic Mexican chow. A particularly problematic dish may be the beans--flavorless except for onion. But if you frequent this kind of restaurant, you know what you're getting and except for the beans it fulfilled our expectations completely. De rigeur free chips and salsa to start your meal, beer & mixed drinks available. According to a sign on the wall, there are drink specials every weeknight ($2.50 mexican beers on Thursdays, for example). As I said before, it was especially nice to have over a half-dozen meatless combo dishes available and easy to find on the menu. Also had a kids menu with a combo of Mexican and non-ethnic fare. We were surprised to find a smoking section in the restaurant, but maybe this is a Missouri thing. We are from out of state. A sign on the door said the whole place is smoke free for at least a few hours on Sunday. read more

We stopped here on a trip with girlfriends. When we pulled up it was a little worrisome because it was ran down looking. We got sat, drinks came out and we ordered food. Most of us split meals and the waiter kept everything straight and brought extra plates. We all ordered pollo cheese rice. The portions were HUGE and it was seriously the BEST flavored chicken and cheesy rice any of us have ever had. We were so happy to have stayed and tried it. Prices were fair too. Went in to be seated. They couldn't seem to bother. Finally the next people in line asked about being seated from the girl at the counter. She copped an attitude of why hasn't someone seated you yet like we were all to blame. They when we asked to be seated out of the way she said and I quote "NOPE" and threw the menus on the table busted through our group trying to sit down and walked away...needless to say we walked out leaving the menus lay on the table. read more

Hubby and I love Mexican food. We made a trip to the hardware store and decided to try this restaurant. I ordered a tossed salad and a "A La Carte" order of tacos. There salad was a little challenged with very little besides lettuce and bell pepper. The tacos were kind of bland. Our waiter spoke very little English -- so it was hard to ask about the food. My husband didn't eat much of his lunch either. But it was clean and the service was prompt. read more

We have seen this place for years and was always hesitant to eat here...Last night we decided to take the plunge since the parking lot was full....boy were we in for a rude awakening. The place is dingy and dirty, and I won't even mention the sad state of the men's restroom....bad. I ordered the taco salad since I thought it would be safe. I was wrong, the taco salad had all this wetness in the bottom, I guess from the lettuce the bottom of the shell completely dissolved. My friends meal wasn't much to look at either. The best thing about the place was the ice tea. We couldn't stomach finishing our meals so we left and stopped by Dairy Queen.
