Worst service I have ever had in any restaurant ever. The waiter came to the table and acted as if we didn't even exist. Didn't listen to our order. I ordered a margarita he brought me a beer. OK that's a mistake. Then 4 other tables came in and they got their food before us. When I asked the waiter what the problem was he said it was a problem in the kitchen and he didn't know. Then I saw him hand the kitchen what I believe was our order. Sure enough 20 minutes later our food arrived. My wife's order was wrong. We are now at 45mins and another table has gotten their food. When she finally got the food it had onions which she specifically gave directions in the original order that she didn't want. The food: It is excellent and that is why we drove 25 miles to get here. My wife and I have been enjoying El Jaripeo over the last couple of months. I did not know I liked Chorizo so much until I had the Chori Pollo. Chicken and Chorizo with cheese sauce. Its great, my go to dish. It is enough for my wife and I to split. I also recommend the Bean dip, very good. Marked down for service. They are nice and helpful but very slow. This is probably one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever ate at. And to believe I found it in a small Virginia town of Culpeper. The pico de gallo and homemade guacamole is to die for and the traditional dinners are excellent with large portions. Being a pessimist by nature, I rarely throw around words 'best' or 'unbelievable'. This was the best, most unbelievably tasty mexican food I've ever had. We came on the recommendation of a friend on facebook, and we were seated promptly. My wife ordered a jumbo strawberry margarita which was delicious and properly portioned. She ordered enchiladas which to show how good it was, she finished before me. That NEVER happens! I ordered the fajitas which came out phenomenally. The steak and shrimp in the fajitas were perfectly cooked. We finished off with fried ice cream, and it was worth the ice cream headache. The prices for the volume of food almost makes me feel guilty for the amount of food we got. I feel like I wronged the restaurant, and then I take the next bite and it tasted sinfully delicious. They not only cater, but also do to go orders! I see a lot of my money going to this place in the future! This is a welcome addition to the Culpeper restaurant scene. This is our go to restaurant 9 times our of 10, when my husband and I go out to eat. He loves their steak and chicken fajitas, I'm a fan of shrimp fajitas or chimichangas. We always order queso dip to go with the free chips and salsa. Some times they have off days, cheese might be extremely runny, portions aren't always the same and a few times the fountain soda is flat. Other than being extremely busy, the staff is friendly and as attentive as possible. The restaurant and bathroom are usually pretty clean. read more

My family did not stay to eat here. We have never been and thought we would try the restaurant out. We are a family of 4 and when the woman first started taking us to a table, she brought us to a section that was filled except 4 tables in the middle which could sit 6 people on each table. She said sorry no room and brought us to a different section of the restaurant where no one was sitting and obviously had no ac. It is a 90 degree+ day. We asked if we could sit in the other section because this area was hot. The woman then told us no, so we said well then we cannot stay. El Jaripeo is a good standard Mexican Restaurant. My family and friends go here every one or two weeks and never have a bad meal. Good Mexican and America beers on tap with a small bar too if you don't want table service. Food generally isn't outstanding, but food and prices are good and service is very friendly. I will say the fajitas for two IS outstanding in my opinion...Great flavor, quality and quantity. My 20 year old son and I ate our fill and still hand plenty left for lunch the next day!! Food isn't that good and the service is worse. The best thing about our experience was the queso and free chips and salsa. Waitresses are non existent, I don't know what they do but it sure isn't taking care of their customers. And then they try to pocket your money after paying. Who does that? My wife and I eat here when the chance presents itself. We usually go for the lunch specials which are super cheap and taste really good. We've eaten here over a dozen times and the only complaint would be that on occasion our waitress doesn't speak English so she doesn't understand our orders. In town for a visit. Was looking for something close with good reviews, I had high hopes for this place. We sat outside, it was pretty dirty and not well kept outside at all. We had the cheese dip as an appetizer, towards the end of it we found a hair in the bottom of the bowl. My sister got the nachos and I got tacos both with ground beef. My sister's nachos were not near appetizing, the "tomato's" was one little half a slice placed on top. The beef was more water than meat. After squeezing the water out onto my plate I ate one of the very bland tacos. When the waiter took my plate he was rushing and spilled Taco Lake all over my legs. I really wanted to like this place because of the good reviews, but our experience here was on the verge of terrible. I came with a group of 6 last weekend. Food was excellent, I got the carnitas and the meat was seasoned perfectly. My fiancé got the chicken chimichangas which he thought was only OK. Guacamole and queso were also very good. The reason why I'm giving this place 2 stars is because of our experience. We arrived at the restaurant around 4:30 and the group ordered drinks. My fiancé ordered a beer and everyone else ordered margaritas. We waited for about 30 minutes (not an exaggeration) until the drinks arrived. A group that came in AFTER us had already received their drinks AND meals by this time I had noticed. My fiancé also received a Diet Coke instead of the beer he ordered, and told the waitress. She brought correct drink a couple minutes later. We brushed it off because maybe it just took a while to make the drinks? So another 10 minutes go by, we've been sitting for about 40 minutes and we finally get to order. After we order, food comes out rather quickly and we're satisfied. We finish dinner and wait about 10-15 minutes until the waitress offers the check. We split it three ways (there were three couples). I used to be a waitress and this isn't hard to do. So we wait for our checks for another 30 minutes and they finally arrive. Keep in mind the restaurant does not appear busy so we're all baffled by why it was taking so long. Anyway, we get the checks and ALL of us notice something wrong with our checks. My fiancé and I were charged with the Diet Coke he did not ask for and 2 margaritas we didn't order. A couple minutes pass and the waitress comes back and we tell her about the mistakes. No problem, she'll fix it. ANOTHER 30 minutes or so (still not exaggerating) and we wait for the fixed checks. Everyone in the group is becoming restless and agitates for the wait. She finally returns with the "fixed" checks. We look at our check and nothing had changed! We still had the Diet Coke and 2 margaritas on it that we did NOT order. So we tell her again. I'm pretty mad at this point and we wait to tell her about it again and wait for awhile until she finally shows up. We tell her it's still not fixed and ask to speak to a manager. She ignores this request and proceeds to take the checks back to fix them. Maybe they don't have a manager here? I dunno. Anyway she finally comes back and has taken off only one of the margaritas, but at this point were defeated and have spent over an hour after we've finished our meal trying to fix a problem that never got fixed. We weren't offered any kind of comp off our bill for making us wait for over an hour or any kind of apology. As someone whose worked in the restaurant business this BAFFLES me. So we came in around 4:30 and left closer to 8. Only 20 minutes of that time was actually spent enjoying the food. :( read more

Wow! What can I say?! Best Mexican food I've had on the East Coast! Take my word for it, I'm a Californian! This spot even has Chile Verde! The pricing was fair and about $10-12 for a burrito. We were in town for a hike and decided to try out the local Mexican food. I was incredibly skeptical, but was totally convinced by my first bite. I came here for lunch and am posting this as I'm sitting here. So far our salsa is just ok, great blend but the quality of peppers isn't that hot or tasty. Cheese dip was above average so that's a plus. There does seem to be a lack of understanding or language barrier. Their hot salsa isn't hot either it taste of cumin. Just got our food after 3 baskets of chips ( actually bowls not baskets) while listen to a mix of club music so my wife's fajitas was very bland and has a taste I can't quite pin down. But not eating anymore. To add to it no garden either with the fajitas. I got the mini chimichangas which were ok other than the beef was stew meat cubed and had a weird flavor along with the chicken. I have become such a huge fan as have my kids and friends who I have introduced to El Jaripeo. The restaurant is furnished nicely and is very clean. The staff is wonderful, so friendly. Sometimes, I just go to see them. Everything I have had there has been good to excellent. Prices are very reasonable with lunch specials being quite so. The salsa is excellent, so fresh. I am addicted. I find the food to be authentic, though I do not claim to be an expert. I do understand that there are a few menu items that are Honduranian, like the Catrachos. Happy Hour means great prices on draft beer and cocktails. You can't beat a 22oz Negra Modelo for $2.50! Please give them a try. I really want to continue to like this spot but the last three times that I have done a take out order the wait is so bad. This time I was told it would be ready in 20 mins but based on my last couple of experiences I decided to wait 30 before I left my house and I still I stood and waited for another 20 mins. Just had dinner here tonight with my husband. The food was great. Love the cheese sauce. The service was fast and friendly. The price is super for the quality and service. The only problem was that at about 20 minutes to 9:00 they were sweeping the carpet with brooms. They close at 10:00 so it seems a little early and I don't know why they would not wait till closer to closing time and use a vacuum. There were still people coming in to eat. Looked like a curling game the way they were sweeping the carpet so vigorously. I think it's the best Mexican food in Culpeper. read more
