We decided to get drinks at El Jardin in Twain Harte while we waited on getting Friday the 13th Flash Tattoos at Juniper Moon. As it was Feb. 13th; they had some Valentine's day special drinks. We all ordered drinks; our server/bartender made our drinks so good. She was super attentive, friendly & offered to make us other drinks if we didn't see something on the menu we liked. We ordered the Queso Blanco & Guacamole appetizers. I ordered the Cotton Candy Margarita, my friends got the Valentini, Espresso Martini & a Lemon Drop. They were all good; the Espresso Martini was probably the best of all the drinks we tried. The restaurant was quite when we arrived and picked up as we enjoyed our time together. This was my first time at this location, and they were clean, they had amazing detailed mosaic floor and large windows. They also have a dog friendly patio which is a plus for all you fur mamas out there. We plan on coming back for dinner at another time. Overall great experience made our wait full of fun. read more

So I love Twain Harte! However, while stopping by this Mexican restaurant, I noticed it seemed like an outdated restaurant. Which I was OK with because you never know the food might be good. The server was kind she didn't seem to smile much. However, she definitely checked in and took care of us. It was pretty hot in the restaurant. It was 79° on their thermostat. It was a hot summer day so I'm wondering why they wouldn't turn the AC on anyhow. I also looked up and there were bottles all over the bar, and a lot of them were dusty and old looking. Anyhow, I ordered the flautas, enchiladas plate, and a kids chicken strips and french fries. The chips and dip came out. The chips seemed a little bit stale, and the dip was very bland and not really that tasty. When the food came out, I noticed the food was not what I ordered refried beans, but it was whole pinto beans. I didn't complain. I just thought OK I'm going to eat it. That was on both of our plates. My plate the flautas plate had two big rolled up, flautas with green salsa topped over them with the queso white cheese. And I thought to myself flautas are not supposed to be this big or fat but anyhow, we will try them. The chicken was very dry and the sauce did not give it a good taste. There was a good crunch to it however, it was super big for a flauta. They need to be smaller. Then the rice and the beans were so bland and disgusting. I didn't even want to eat it. I just had some of it because I was starving. The enchiladas were something I can make at home with a can. It was definitely the canned sauce. It was not authentic. Same thing with the rice and the beans. The chicken tenders came out with the french fries and they were cold. They tasted disgusting. My daughter didn't even want to eat the food. Long story short, we got two boxes to take home, my partner he ended up eating the enchilada plate because he was starving as well. But the food was so gross that I felt bad and I just took it with me but ended up throwing it in the trash. $67 later what a waste of money and time horrible. I feel like I was ripped. I would've given this place two stars, but because I feel like it was overpriced for disgusting food, I will not. I would never come back here unless there was a change in owners and the kitchen. The place needs more love. The food needs to be redone. And when somebody orders refried beans, it should come out with refried beans. Another thing is my stomach hurt later on that night and I know it was from the food. I will definitely be steering clear from this place. read more

My husband and I generally do takeout from El Jardin at least once a week (sometimes more if we're feeling lazy). We've tried nearly everything on the menu and it's all delicious. The person at the cash register (the owner?) is very friendly and personable, always checks to ensure our order is correct, and even offers us a place to sit if we come in before the order is ready. We recommend the pollo con crema, the shrimp fajitas, and the fish tacos specifically. With whole beans. We also sometimes eat in, and have no complaints. Great service, food is tasty and arrives quickly, and margaritas are delicious. My ONLY complaint is that recently, there's often some young man standing at the cash counter eating his dinner. I guess he's a friend of whomever is working? In any case, it's uncomfortable when we're trying to pick up food and pay for it, but feeling like we're interrupting someone's dinner. There always seems to be plenty of open seating, so we're not sure why someone would take their meal at the cash counter instead of sitting at a booth or table, but it is pretty gross watching him eat, especially when he shoves his fingers in his mouth and licks/sucks on them. read more

My only knit pick is my Camarones Rancheros plate was a lot of food and big shrimp to boot, a good thing, but only two tortillas were served which was not enough for the food served. I asked for a few more and later discovered they charged an extra $2.50.. recommend you serve 3 at least with this meal. Seeing one of my favorite restaurants in the Tuolumne county area have a 2.5 star rating has me in disbelief. This restaurant never fails to amaze me with their delicious food and amazing drinks! Seems like everyone else just doesn't know what to order, so let me tell you. Their Pollo Con Crema is absolutely to die for. So good that every time I come to town, I'm stopping by to get my fix. Along with my meal, I need a Whiskey Rita and a margarita to wash it down. But, before I eat the main course- I'm going to town on their bean dip and carne asada fries. Not to mention their salsa. This review is over 4 different dining experiences and represents all 4 taken together. Over those 4 "tries" the food was edible at best to barely edible. The worst, and last experience, I order Chicken Taco salad and the flavorless boiled chicken wasn't drained and soaked the bowl to ruination. When dealing with the waiter expect to get two visits, one to take your order and one more when they deliver. You shouldn't expect anything after that. You will have to go the the bar for more service. The atmosphere is always nice and quiet, I am suspicious now. They never seem busy as their food and service is poor. read more

It was hot inside the restaurant and there was a loud group of what seemed like employees drinking and yelling throughout the whole dinner! The chips were stale and salsa was runny and tasted like tomato sauce. Our orders were wrong and had to wait longer for the right orders. We could not get anyone's attention to bring the rest of our meals. Had too many different wait staff under the age of 18 come to the table and get things wrong. The margaritas were too expensive, tasted really bad and were not strong at all! Paid $21 for 6 Prawns in a butter sauce, no rice or beans and they would not give an a la carte price. We love Mexican food and so want to support this business in the Twain Harte area but it is so poorly run. Having visited this place over a dozen times as big Mexican food fans I can tell you we've been double charged, double tips applied, food repeatedly not as ordered (completely wrong dishes), the place closed when they are suppose to be open (no sign or anything) and todays somewhat final straw, walked in at 6:50p and were told they close at 7 and wouldn't serve us. 1 - it's a 3 day weekend how do you close at 7 and 2 - every website with your info on it says you are open until 8. In a town starved for restaurants it's a shame this one stays open because there aren't any other options. They could do so much better with just small adjustments but they likely don't care since it's apparent they get business regardless due to scarcity and have done nothing to improve their reputation or operations. read more

Loved it here very much and I have high standards with eating Mexican cuisine, coming from San Francisco. I wanted a healthier Mexican dish with veggies that still provided a lot of flavor, and I found exactly what I was looking for with the fajita salad with steak. The meat was incredibly tender and juicy with a marinated rich beef broth that pooled on the bottom. The onions and bell peppers were the perfect texture and were seasoned well. Even my three year old loved the verde enchilada with rice and beans, complimenting how good it was the entire time. Very friendly, warm staff too. I would definitely eat here again. read more

We arrived as they were unlocking the door and told that they had to clean the floors so they weren't seating inside yet, did we want to sit on the patio. We grudgingly agreed only to see the next two groups of people ushered right inside. I've been seeing so many negative reviews on El Jardin in Twain Harte that I had to try it again. Been coming here for about 10 years now and I've never had a bad meal or experience. This trip was no different! From our smiling greeter when we entered and were immediately taken to a booth, to their never ending chips and salsa, to their wonderful margaritas and then the enchiladas mole...which are delicious...we were all (there were 4 of us) very happy with our meals and our choice of restaurant! Our server checked on us throughout our meal to be certain we had everything we needed. Our friends who accompanied us (and have been here before) were also very surprised by the bad reviews. They enjoy Mexican cuisine more often than we do and El Jardin is up there with their favorite places! I would definitely recommend this restaurant and of course, we'll be back again! read more
