This family run cantina is operated by a nice family from Jalisco, Mexico The food was authentic and delicious and the service was great. They have a side room for small parties, which was being utilized when we were there for dinner. The carnitas were cooked to perfection and the queso sauce was a nice addition with our chips and salsa. read more

Stopped in here for a quick bite after white water rafting all day. The place was on the way home and would be a great place to take a quick break. Here we got quick service, chips, and drinks. It was just what we needed. We all ordered something different and lots of piping hot food. It took a bit to get our food and we didn't get refills, but it was still a good place. Let me start off with we have eaten here almost on a weekly basis since it opened. It has gone downhill fast. We are the type of people who smother whatever we're eating with salsa. Imagine our disgust when a friend empties the jar of salsa that we had all just used to find a cooked dead fly. We all, even my husband who will eat literally everything, stopped eating. We said we would pay for our drinks, but that was it since our food was doused with tainted salsa. Can you believe they still charged us full price on our meal??? After the way we were treated, and now that we know how nasty the kitchen is, we will never go back. If I could post this with 0 stars I totally would. read more

This is a really great spot for lunch or dinner. When visiting family and friends in Montgomery it seems like we always end up dining in or getting take-out at some point during the trip. I highly recommend the fajitas and white queso. Both items are very good and very fresh. The tacos and burritos are also very good. The staff here are fast and accommodating, and are happy to customize the meal however you like. Definitely worth a stop if you live in the Montgomery/UKV area or are in town visiting. Also, this location has Jarrito's soda which is the perfect compliment to Mexican food (Try the grapefruit variety). read more

What is going on here? I've eaten here regularly since they opened. In the last year, especially, the food has gone down hill. The chips and salsa!! I got a to go order tonight, and the chips tasted like they'd been fried in VERY old oil. Yuck. Definitely not heading in the right direction. read more

Pretty decent for the area! The food was hot and fresh, there were lots of vegetarian options that weren't drowned in cheese, and the chips and salsa were good. My husband had a mushroom spinach quesadilla and I had spicy shrimp- I was happy with it and the prices were great. We got in right away. The building is a little old, but seemed clean. read more

This is my favorite Mexican place of all time, and I've been to MANY Mexican restaurants, from Ripley, Spencer, Summersville, Montgomery, Charleston, Oak Hill, and down to Beckley and even into Virginia. I went to college right across the street from this restaurant a few years ago, and we'd eat here once a week, and before that I'd been eating there with my family for years. This is the only place I've come across who gives you not only great food, but most importantly, enough cheese sauce to make it worth the price, and my favorite part, their salsa. It's a salsa unlike any other. They must clearly make it themselves. It's not like watery liquid with chunks of tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc... no. This is much more. It's like a purée, made from the essence of dreams and good fortune, yet you can clearly taste every ingredient that went into making it. Not spicy, not sweet, not tangy, but perhaps a small mixture of them all? It's the only salsa I could, dare I say it, drink, quite literally. It's simply fabulous. Now, last year they went through a bit of a change, I'm assuming a switch in management and/or ownership, because things started to change a bit. They got new menus, new cooks that made things a little strangely, and the worst part was the new booths. They're so tall that you have to lean down and over your food to eat it. It's terribly awkward. They have one of the old booths left, and us locals know right where it is and always go straight for it. So anyway, the food is still good, not what it used to be but still better than anything else I've tried. The salsa has also changed a little too, it's a little spicier, and has so much cilantro in it I could choke. I definitely miss the good ol' days, but it's still an awesome restaurant, one that we make trips to Montgomery just for. I wish they'd expand to Beckley, and bring back the old salsa. read more

El Jalisco isn't the greatest Mexican food in the world but for being in a small town like Montgomery, they're a lot better than you'd expect. The restaurant selections here are limited to say the least and these guys are pretty much our go-to. The fajitas are always hot, the chips and salsa are endless, the plates are big, and the margaritas are never watered down. The Texas margarita, especially, is pretty killer. What else can you ask for right? So far, I've gotten the fajitas, enchiladas supremas, fajita nachos, the Guadelejara special, and the carnitas. All are very tasty and I usually rotate through those dishes with each visit. The servers are always pleasant and attentive too. So all in all, I wouldn't go in expecting to get your mind blown, but they're a regular spot for us and I would freely recommend it for anyone needing their Mexican food fix. read more

I had the many specials on the menu in the last few months. I like the seafood with scallops and the special white dipping cheese sauce a specialty cheese very mild. Menu goes from mild medium spicy to hot and there are three large full pages of made to order food. Always hot always perfection. Fajitas are over the top. I love this place. It's pretty much the same as every other Mexican joint in the Kanawha Valley, but a few dishes stand out. Their chori pollo and chile verde are killer. Make friends with the owner, and he'll make sure your margaritas get the job done. read more

I don't really care for mexican but my family does and they love it. They usually get one of about 5 or 6 different things and I always get the steak fajita nachos and we love it! This is easily the best restaurant in the small college town of Montgomery, and probably the best Mexican restaurant in the state. I went to college at Tech and was a senior when El Jalisco moved in. I moved out of the area last summer, and this restaurant is one of the only things I miss about the area. When visiting family in the area, we always make it a point to have dinner at El Jalisco. The staff is exceptionally friendly, and the owner/proprietor is always smiling and treats us like family when we are there. Service is speedy, even on busy days. Between my husband and I, we have probably tried close to everything on the menu, and there is not anything we have disliked. Anything with their cheese sauce is a safe bet - it's to die for. Their salsa is made with fresh tomatoes daily, and is among the best I've had at any Mexican restaurant in the eastern US. If you are in the Montgomery area, chances are you have already eaten at El Jalisco and share my sentiments. If you haven't, go check them out! You won't regret it. :) Edit: I forgot to mention the insanely affordable prices here. You can get lunch for around $5, and dinner for around $7. Can't beat that! read more

Only con is, it's too small, so if you are planning to have dinner there on a Friday or Saturday evening, your wait time may be a little longer than expected.
