a display case full of cookies and pastries

Heard about a Mexican Bakery called El Hornita Bakery out on Rutherford Blvd. Took a ride out there and WOW...as you can see from the pictures this is a really cool place. I roamed around the store and a lady came out named Maggie...the owner. We strolled the store and she answered my questions about the different things throughout the store. She showed me how you pick up an orange tray (like a lunch tray in school) and a set of tongs. Go through the store opening cabinets and selecting the pastries, cookies, or cakes you desire and loading up the tray. When you are in a candy shop, by the time you get to the checkout there's sticker shock cause you're like "how much???"...not in this case. The entire tray of goods I selected, barely over $6!!! Forgive me for not remembering all of the names of the baked goods, but...The Tres Leches is raspberry and DELICIOUS. One of the best Tres Leches I have ever tasted and they have a number of different flavors. The pastry shaped like an arrowhead covered in sugar is loaded with pineapple. The thick cookie is a vanilla cookie that literally melts in your mouth. I picked up a roll I believe is similar to a Spanish Bocadillo that will be an incredible sandwich tomorrow. The cake is a mango fruit with cream...yet to be sampled. They have meat filled pastries, cakes for any occasion, and of course just a few pastries to satisfy your sweet tooth. This place is a gem offering you the chance to look around, select, take home, and enjoy.

Can you say pastry heaven? I walked in on a Sunday afternoon, and there were soooooo many selections here. I loved it so much and will definitely be back. You pretty much just walk in, grab a tray, and grab a tong. After that, you walk around and grab whatever you want, and put it on the tray. When I say there is a variety to choose from, there was so much here. I love pastries, so this was pastry heaven to me. Now let's talk about prices. The prices here was amazing. I grabbed a coconut juice, big slice of cake from the fridge, a donut, and about 6 other pastry items, and the the price was only $11. Yesss I will be back! Every single week! If I wasn't busy working, I would be here every day!

This location doesn't have any sitting options but there is some outdoor sitting in this plaza. As far as service, everyone has always been polite and helpful.

This location is in a nice shopping area, though parking is fairly limited. It looks like the shop might be able to be open air/it has large windows that look like they open, but it was chilly and rainy during my visit so they were shut. The inside was clean and an employee greeted me politely and seemed eager to help or answer questions. They have mini and regular sizes of donut; the regular sized ones are quite large. I imagine minis would be good to try a lot of flavors at once. They do have an impressive array of creative flavors. I think they have some flavors that stay the same every month and then additionally monthly special flavors. These are more like cronuts than traditional donuts; they have many layers of flakey pastry. I love donuts like this! They're rolled in sugar and then filled with cream and covered in glaze. They're decadent! Given this is such a popular growing brand, they were out of a few items and the counter looked a little sparse. I was also surprised to find that there really weren't any yummy aromas or baking smells in the shop. It didn't smell unpleasant at all or anything, just not like a bakery. I can't help but imagine perhaps the donuts are brought in after being prepared elsewhere. Even if that's the case, though, the product really didn't suffer for it. I got their take on a Samoa donut and a sea salt chocolate cream donut and brought them home to share with my husband. They were both incredibly rich...but also quite delicious. I liked them both and it's hard to pick a favorite. If pressed, I'd maybe go the salted chocolate cream donut, simply because it was a little different than what I expected but in a good way. It wasn't too sweet or too salty and the cream had a fantastic texture. I'd happily return to try other flavors. Maybe in the future I'll get to visit the original location! That would be fun.
