Food was fine, better half had recommended as he had gone to other locations growing up. However, a credit card company sent a notification a few days later asking if the tip for this restaurant should be 31 percent. It shouldn't have been, I remember the tip which was 20 percent. When we called we were informed that the servers enter their own tips in to the system themselves ... and apparently round up (from 12 dollars to 20) How many people are they doing this to? Check your receipt. It's a shame as we would have been back, but won't now. read more

I've been going here since I was little and the ambiance, art, costumer service, and food has always been a wonderful experience. I'm always noticing new things from the detailed patterns on the table, the terracotta colored walls, the wall painting itself, ect. I feel a little bad about ordering the burger, especially when the other food is so good and brings back memories, but it's one- if not my favorite- out there with delicious guacamole and a good texture throughout, and 100% the fries are the best I've ever had (golden and crispy with soft potato inside, especially good with the ketch, salsa, or guacamole they serve). They always have fresh tortilla chips and salsa for the whole table while waiting , also providing low sodium (they dont salt one of the bowls) upon request. 5/5 stars every time. so under-rated. read more

Pretty middle of the road food, no spices and no heat. I don't expect burn down the house ghost-pepper heat but we're talking zero heat. They do have an extensive menu. I went between lunch and dinner so the service was minimal. There really isn't any ambiance it just a large facility like most family eateries. Overall it's okay but I wouldn't go out of the way, I just happen to be staying at the Holiday Inn a few blocks away. read more

Food has always been just OK, traditional Tex mex. What used to be excellent was their chips, with the many blistered surface and excellent texture/flavor. They've now downgraded their chips. New ones are not good at all! WTF. No real reason to go now, so many better options. Bring back the old chips! Bring back the old chips!! read more

We were craving Mexican food at 9pm after the fair and they were the only place open after 9 or 9:30 at night. They stay open until 10 pm. We had never tried them before so as a diehard Texan I thought what the heck! The queso and chips were amazing! Nothing else we had was so we won't be back! Came for lunch and had the tamale lunch plate. It was delicious- especially the rice with the Pico de Gallo mixed in. The tamales were tasty but were mostly masa and I like having more meat in mine. This is an old McKinney establishment and could use an updo. Be careful when seating in a booth. Some of them have worn springs so are very saggy. We kept moving until we found one that was descent but I still sat like I was a little kid. Come on El Fenix- showing your age isn't cool especially with all of the competition! read more

Good Food! My family and I came here for dinner on Saturday around 4:30pm. After walking in, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated, we waited another 5-7 minutes to get our drink orders in. The server was very friendly and apologized about the wait. I think they are short staffed right now, as we only saw a few servers working the entire restaurant. The restaurant had a nice vibe, but it could really use a minor remodel. The restrooms were clean, which is always a great sign in my book. We all enjoyed chips and salsa while we waited for our food. Our food arrived at the table about 15 minutes after we placed our ordered. Everything looked great, tasted delicious, and was well worth the wait. My finance's burrito was HUGE.. first time I haven't seen him finish his meal in ages. I really liked the fact that they also have some delicious meatless options as well. I really enjoyed the Veggie Enchiladas. We were all very satisfied, and stuffed. The food was reasonably priced, and a great value for the money. I would definitely come back here again. read more

Haven't had Mexican food in awhile and was excited to go to El Fenix although this was my first visit at this location. Service was great. Food was subpar. Chicken enchilada looked like it was packed with canned chicken and granddaughters fried chicken tenders and fries tasted like chicken you get from a food stand - very prominent taste of old grease. Yikes... Found this place on Thrillest. According to their recently published article "The 30 Most Essential Food Experiences in Dallas", their enchiladas are "an iconic platter of chile con carne-laden cheese enchiladas alongside a bounty of rice, beans, chips, and salsa (all included in the price, mind you), these are an oldie, sure, but decidedly a goody"... but I'd disagree. Parking here was easy, they have their own lot. The food here was super watery, from the black beans to the salsa. So if you like watery foods, this place is for you. My husband ordered a burrito, I ordered the enchiladas. Both seemed to have the same exact ingredients, with the exception that mine was covered in what seemed like canned chili (the kind you eat campfire side) and his was covered in the same watery salsa that we got with our chips. The service was... odd. It wasn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't good either. The service was more... less than satisfactory. As we were ordering, I asked the waitress to hold to cheese on the black beans (because when you're pregnant, you can't have cojita), and she gave me this puzzled face when I asked. Then, I pointed at the picture and asked if the beans had cheese like the picture, and she said no, it's extra. (Pretty sure the photo with their brunch specials is a stock photo because their food did not look anything like it. FALSE ADVERTISING.) Then, the waitress gave us someone else's food, then took it away and gave it to the right table, another awkward moment. I have been going to El Fenix restaurants for 60 years. They used to be my favorite restaurant but lately,at least at this one, has really gone down hill. The hot sauce was watered down and had very little flavor. The crispy beef taco tasted old, like old grease. The enchilada and tamales were just OK. The chips and salsa are our favorite among Mexican restaurants in the area. There can sometimes be a wait for a table here but typically you can get seated with a relatively short wait. read more

I'm sitting here with two young boys and it's taken almost a full hour for our food to arrive and this is what the $7.99 nachos look like. I had to ask for a manager to get refills and the toppings we requested after getting lame nachos. Not to mention the booth backs aren't secure, so I spent the whole hour talking kids off the ledge while getting knocked forward by the guy sitting behind me over and over again. We've been coming to this location for about 20 years. My mother likes it even better than the downtown location. The chips and salsa are the best in town. The service is attentive and delightful. It could be a bit cooler, but all in all it's a win. The music is the right level, the skylights let in natural light. Carlos, the manager, greets customers with fresh chips and a smile. Maybe the worst service I've ever had in my long life. We had to get our own silverware. We had to get our own seconds on chips and hot sauce. We would have gotten our own drink refills, but we didn't know where they were, so we got ZERO drink refills. The worst waitress I've ever had in my life basically took our order when she brought our first chips and hot sauce, brought our food maybe 10 minutes later, and brought our ticket much much later, long after we were through. Never asked us if we needed anything. Never asked us if everything was alright. She couldn't have possible cared less. Lots of good Mexican food places in McKinney now. I won't be back. If my memory is correct I remember not having a serious problem with El Fenix. Their tacos were good as was their Chile Relleno. Let me be clear, this was a delivery. Problems with delivery usually entail forgotten food, order not hot, wrong item. I had none of those problems with my order. My problem was with the whole meal. I ordered the Botana Sampler. I thought I would broaden my palate & try different things. This sampler turned me off. It let you sample seasoned chicken with sour cream (4), wow I forgot it was topped with sour cream. 1 beef flauta 1 chicken & 4 steak fajita quesadilla. It was served with a side of fresh guacamole & their fire roasted queso, sour cream & jalapeños. A good sampling right? Would have been but had it been delivered any other way then being "placed" (not) in a styrofoam container. I do wish they had placed it but it looked like it was thrown. The food was stuffed in the container meaning each item was placed tightly making everything overlapping. Trying to separate them was a mistake. Never attempt to pick up a soggy-greasy nacho. It falls apart & the grease almost makes it inedible. All of the fried food was a mess except for the flautas. Those were over fried making the tortilla crisp but it made it flake to the point where it was so dry I couldn't taste anything. The only reason why I gave this 2 stars but the container holding the sides was so good barring the sour cream. The guacamole was indeed fresh with chunks of avocado. I did have a problem though. Looks can be deceiving. I know lettuce is the base for things like the guac & sour cream but because the lettuce is not flat it makes it look like there is more than it actually is. If this occurs you put a little more to compensate. Not the case here. The queso was addicting. Even the jalapeños were good, nice & spicy. A for the charro beans. It was like a soup but the flavor was spot on. Needless to say I took a bite of everything. In my case the chicken was was dry enough to make it tasteless. So I pushed it aside with a bad taste in my mouth. Being that I was still hungry I went for my fruit loops with ice cold milk. ***PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS REVIEW IS JUST MY OPINION*** read more

You can't spit in McKinney without hitting a Mexican restaurant, but El Fenix does Mexican well. Mexican food for the gringos, mind you. It's homogenized Tex-mex, but consistent. Chips and salsa are one of my weaknesses and their chips are really exceptional. Today I had tortilla soup and it was quite nice.
