Pretty solid meal. Not expensive. Service is slow and not really friendly. Chips and salsa were good.

Can't believe 2016 was my last visit. On second thought,I can. A few years ago under new ownership after one hundred years, they were headed for the trash heap. Fortunately, they got smart and turned the ship around. Once again you can go to most El Fenix and get a good plate of Tex Mex.... Go!

    Tamale lunch

Came for lunch and had the tamale lunch plate. It was delicious- especially the rice with the Pico de Gallo mixed in. The tamales were tasty but were mostly masa and I like having more meat in mine. This is an old McKinney establishment and could use an updo. Be careful when seating in a booth. Some of them have worn springs so are very saggy. We kept moving until we found one that was descent but I still sat like I was a little kid. Come on El Fenix- showing your age isn't cool especially with all of the competition!

    Dinner with the family

Good Food! My family and I came here for dinner on Saturday around 4:30pm. After walking in, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated, we waited another 5-7 minutes to get our drink orders in. The server was very friendly and apologized about the wait. I think they are short staffed right now, as we only saw a few servers working the entire restaurant. The restaurant had a nice vibe, but it could really use a minor remodel. The restrooms were clean, which is always a great sign in my book. We all enjoyed chips and salsa while we waited for our food. Our food arrived at the table about 15 minutes after we placed our ordered. Everything looked great, tasted delicious, and was well worth the wait. My finance's burrito was HUGE.. first time I haven't seen him finish his meal in ages. I really liked the fact that they also have some delicious meatless options as well. I really enjoyed the Veggie Enchiladas. We were all very satisfied, and stuffed. The food was reasonably priced, and a great value for the money. I would definitely come back here again.

Yikes... Found this place on Thrillest. According to their recently published article "The 30 Most Essential Food Experiences in Dallas", their enchiladas are "an iconic platter of chile con carne-laden cheese enchiladas alongside a bounty of rice, beans, chips, and salsa (all included in the price, mind you), these are an oldie, sure, but decidedly a goody"... but I'd disagree. Parking here was easy, they have their own lot. The food here was super watery, from the black beans to the salsa. So if you like watery foods, this place is for you. My husband ordered a burrito, I ordered the enchiladas. Both seemed to have the same exact ingredients, with the exception that mine was covered in what seemed like canned chili (the kind you eat campfire side) and his was covered in the same watery salsa that we got with our chips. The service was... odd. It wasn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't good either. The service was more... less than satisfactory. As we were ordering, I asked the waitress to hold to cheese on the black beans (because when you're pregnant, you can't have cojita), and she gave me this puzzled face when I asked. Then, I pointed at the picture and asked if the beans had cheese like the picture, and she said no, it's extra. (Pretty sure the photo with their brunch specials is a stock photo because their food did not look anything like it. FALSE ADVERTISING.) Then, the waitress gave us someone else's food, then took it away and gave it to the right table, another awkward moment. When we were starting to debate about getting dessert, the waitress slapped down the bill.. so I guess they really wanted to get out of there.

Love the traditional Tex Mex dishes. Tacos and enchiladas as I remember from years ago. Great salsa. The lemon pie dessert is excellent.

I knew from the second we walked in, based on the list of made-in-house horchatas and agua frescas, that we were going to be in for a good meal. The menu was refreshingly unique compared to your basic street taco style setup or the usual Tex-Mex mashup of inauthentic tacos topped with shredded cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. Our group of 3 adults, plus my 7 year old niece, shared a bowl of guacamole, which was phenomenal and came mixed with sunflower seeds and topped with crumbled cotija, alongside house-made corn tortilla chips. We also split an elote cup, which was great. My wife got a classic horchata, which was deliciously sweet (but not overly so) with a nice slight punch of cinnamon. I went with water but will definitely try an agua fresca next time. I ordered two tacos, both on house-made flour tortillas (I like corn tortillas but prefer flour when made fresh). The Pollo Azteca, with marinated grilled chicken tenderloin, mango pico, and a drizzle of crema, was phenomenal, and had more flavor than most chicken tacos I've had before. The star of my meal, however, was the Al Pastor, with adobo marinated pork tenderloin, diced pineapple, onions, and cilantro, with a slice of lime to squeeze on top. This was hands down one of the best tacos I've ever had in my life. I was floored. I also tried my wife's Carne Asada tacos, which came topped with cilantro and onions, and a slice of lime, on their house made corn tortillas. The steak was incredibly flavorful, and the corn tortillas were tender without being chewy. We shared a side of rice and beans, which was good, but not the star of the show. The rice was your typical Mexican yellow rice, and the beans were more of a soupy whole-beans style, which reminded me of my Colombian mother-in-law's recipe. The staff makes four homemade salsas, ranging from mild to pretty spicy, and I loved all of them with the exception of the mild. My niece got the kids' cheese quesadilla, which was a simple melted Oaxaca cheese between a flour tortilla, served with rice, beans, and a little side of crema. The last thing I will rave about is the service. The staff was incredibly nice from the minute we walked in, pleasant to talk to when delivering our order and asking how everything was tasting, to the moment we bussed our tables and headed for the door. I cannot wait to come back again, and I hope they stay very busy until I'm able to do so, because I want this place to be around for a very long time!

The atmosphere and service have a homey feel, which is perfectly fine by me. It feels comfortable, welcoming, and genuine. We are regulars here, and I'm not sure why I haven't written a review until now. We've been several times, and the food has been consistently delicious. The service is usually very good, and while the kitchen can sometimes be a little slow, the food is always presented well, especially for this price point. A couple of our favorite dishes are the Gabriel, with two chicken enchiladas, spinach, and sour cream sauce, and the Mario, which comes with three brisket tacos, Monterey Jack, and poblano peppers. For dessert, it is hard to beat the churros. The restaurant can be a little hard to find since it is tucked in the back corner of the lot behind Firestone, west of Kroger, but it is definitely worth looking for. If you enjoy good Tex-Mex from a local family-run spot, this place is absolutely worth trying.
