Food is still pretty good, but I waited a looong time for a meal at 2pm recently. Probably just a Covid catch-up.

Ok, I was a fan of El Famous/El Fast for many years even though the steak has what we like to call "chewies", (fat and gristle), and usually you have to pick through it. Also, the place usually smells like a dirty mop, but whatever, the food was decent. Before tonight I would have given it three stars. Dollar tacos on Sunday and Tuesday is a great deal, which is why we decided to grab dinner there tonight. After eating most of my side of rice and beans, I got to the bottom of the cup and find a curly black hair. Absolutely disgusting! I don't know where the hair came from - I don't want to know. I gotta say I was very surprised by how tasty the chicken burritos are! I think they steam the chicken as it kind of resembles pulled pork. The seasoning they use is on hit. You look at it and you think it looks weird, but it just tastes excellent. With the chicken I get the following (cilantro, onions, cheese, lime, salsa verde). I happened to be out one day on a weekend, decided to try it and so I called my wife to take an order and she refused as she had eaten earlier in the day. Little did I know that when I got home she wanted to taste the burrito and ended up eating close to half of it! We also liked the horchata they sell. We have been frequenting this restaurant for many years. The food is incredibly tasty and the price is definitely right. I like to order two chiken tamales or the fajitas plate. My husband likes the steak burrito with extra cilantro. My kids like to order the steak tacos and then order seconds. We split a huge plate of guacamole and chips which are the best in Chicago! This is a great little restaurant with delicious food and friendly service. If you like Mexican food, you will love this restaurant! read more

Great place for a quick, cheap, and a very good taco, burrito, torta. Been here about 5 times now and not once was I treated rudely. The steak and chicken stuffins appear to be fresh, at least fresher than the competitors near by. The $1 days are a bonus but I've been here on the normal price days and they're still a bargain. What i do not like is that they have now doubled the soda refills from .25/.50 to .50/1.00, and the onions and cilantro are no longer free ... at 20 cents per item. Dining room is large, and because it's in a strip mall parking is abundant. Big fan of their Salsa Verdi, no so much of their other. 4 Stars for the food. 2 Stars for the recent price increases. read more

Ordered what they called "Steamed Beef Soup (Barbacoa)" and got a Barbacoa Sope, called to let them know that I didn't get what I ordered and she said they don't serve the soup, only the Sope. All she said was "sorry" and she didn't have a remedy for my issue... I told her that they need to fix their menu and she said "Ummm...yeah. We're working on it." And that was it... This place is ok for $1 tacos which are small but understandable at that price. The sauce is good in both red and green. I have been here at least 15 times in the last few months and I always notice how the counter people never greet English speakers very well as compared to the Spanish speakers. I have mentioned this to my lunch friends who have confirmed the bias in customer service and smiles. Just sit there and pay attention, you will see warm smiles to Hispanics and bland or no greetings to everyone else. One star for that!!! read more

So I've been continuing to eat at this place... and the food is great. I originally thought that the negative attitude of the people who worked here was kind of funny because I honestly had minimal interaction with them, but after my last visit here, I'm kind of bummed out. I went there, they forgot to include any salsa so I asked for some which was alright, but then I got home and realized they had forgotten my drink. Honestly if these people weren't so miserable toward their customers I would think my above complaints were petty, but you can't screw up your service AND be a dick. There's about as many Mexican restaurants and Taquerias around here as there are Starbucks, so I'm taking my money there from now on. read more

I cannot believe all the good reviews on here. Do you all have taste buds? There is a reason it's called El Fast, it's fast and awful. Chicken was strips like you would get from a pre-cooked bag. Ground beef was barely recognizable as meat and so was the steak. It's pretty sad that even with dollar tacos being offered, I still refuse to eat it for fear I may get sick from the meat. If you want real Mexican, go across the street to Taqueria El Gallo De Oro. read more

I cannot believe the good reviews on this place (perhaps low standard for Mexican restaurants in the area) ! I ordered the 3 taco lunch special ($5) and I was very disappointed. 1) the amount of meat on the 3 tacos was equal to one taco anywhere else. 2) the quality of the meat was low, some of it was hard/crisp but not because it was grilled like that but because it was reheated. 3) service was with a serious expression, not rude but not friendly either. As a latin american I'm not going to bash the place as I can't say the food was "bad" but it is not good. I've tried multiple items with all the meats and I can just say it does not seem to be of the best quality you can get near by. Hard to get a steak taco that's doesn't have tough nerves in it. Also refried beans can be ok a little runny but should not have a consistency that gives water a run for its money. I feel like it used to be better here. My work is equidistant between here and my new favorite mexican lunch joint. My suggestion would be take the extra few minutes and drive to Las Asadas on oakton and 83. If you are loyal to this place that's great but I promise you won't be disappointed in the quality/taste there. I ordered the steak burrito dinner combo which comes with beans, rice and a small drink just like everywhere else. The beans and rice were OK but the meat in the burrito was nasty--not steak God knows what kind of meat that was-- tasted horrible and old-- mystery meat I called it! Tricksters!!! I will not set foot there again. Taqueria El Gallo de Oro's across the street steak burritos are waaaay tastier, their quesadillas and fajitas are pretty good too. I wanted to try a new place. However, their inside is nicer than Taqueria El Gallo de Oro's. That 's why I give this place ONE star. read more

I used to go quite often but the last year or so its been hit or miss. The quality of the food is the most frustrating thing. Sometimes it will be good but more often than not it has been either too greasy or the meat has been sitting on the flattop for such a long time that it drys out. The dining area has also been neglected, the windows are dirty, pieces of tape all over from posters or fliers that were once taped to them the air inlet to the horchata machine is covered in lint balls at eye level for all the customer to see. The tables chairs and garbage containers all have pieces either missing or broken off not to mention a light greasy film on everything. The cooking area is visible from behind the counter and it too looks as if they just don't care anymore. To me consistency is the key, make a good product again and again and I will come back, unfortunately they are no longer consistently good. There are too many good Mexican restaurants competing for my business and at this point I choose to go elsewhere. read more

They used to be El Famous Burrito, but converted a few years back. Same menu, good and reliable tacos and burritos. Burritos are huge and come with choice of meat, beans, lettuce, tomato and cheese. Extra for sour cream and avocado. Guac is fresh, but they look at you strangely and don't get the concept of putting the guac ON the burrito - avocado, yes, but not guac. I like the al pastor tacos but most everything I'd rate at 3 stars except the rice, which consistently sucks. Why do I get it each week? A pretty decent sized place for a Des Plaines strip mall taco joint. There is plenty of seating but few workers and it will take some time to get the meal especially if there is a line.
