i've been coming to this el famous since the early 90s, and it has never disappointed. i usually stick with steak tacos or a steak burrito, but the quesadillas are good as well as the sopas and tostadas. i've even had fries here - weird, i know - that were pretty good. a horchata (traditional mexican drink) is a must everytime i go, and the churros are amazing - even if they are a few days old and stale. read more

Spent a week in town and had bad meals four days in a row. Decided to go to el famous burrito and it turned my whole week around. I got the steak burrito with double meat. Meat was delicious, with just a touch of char from the grill adding a delicious flavor. Service was great and food came out super fast. Will definitely be back when I'm back in the area. read more

Good prices nachos are pretty good each chip gets covered with cheese and baked no just chips with stuff thrown on top.

My family is obsessed with El Famous. Despite the chain restaurant name and the hole-in-the-wall vibe, it's our go-to spot. Their chorizo has the perfect amount of kick and the chorizo & egg option is always my go to. Id say the best things off the menu are the tacos and junior burrito (which is still huge). Their salsas are good as well and I always get the horchata. Cheap prices, especially on Taco Tuesday and Sunday. Used to be even cheaper ($1/taco) but now I think it's around $1.50. It has been years since I went to this place. My dad used to take us to the vernon hills branch when we were little just for the nachos. I remember liking them back them. I tried this Wheeling location yesterday and the nachos tasted exactly how I remembered them: cheesy, crunchy, oily. Yummy. I enjoy the guac too which comes with. read more

My wife and I were in the mood for some good Mexican food and this place got good ratings. I'm sorry to say that it was nothing short of horrible in our case. My wife ordered a steak taco dinner and the so called steak was nothing but grizzle and fat. She had to spit out almost all of her meat. I ordered a steak burrito and had the same experience. I ended up pulling out all the so called steak and eating a lettuce and tomato burrito. Not exactly what I had in mind for a Mexican dinner. My wife's' meal came with rice and beans but the beans were pretty watery and tasteless. To be fair, the rice was good although not much flavor. Maybe the other choices of meat are better but the steak was horrible and greasy. One more note, when I was paying I thought it to be nervy that the cashier asked me how much tip to add to my order. Seriously? This was a carry out order. Sorry to say the food we had here was one star at best. Albino T., I understand your concerns with my review but the fact remains that our meat was certainly not high quality meat, we were at the Wheeling location along McHenry Road, and thank you for an offer to address our situation but we will not be coming back. I'm very shocked to read previous reviews, and think maybe somebody got up on the wrong side of the bed. Every time I go to this restaurant, the man taking the orders is very nice. Granted, this is not filet mignon in these burritos, but I bet even Grande Jake's can't claim they serve that either. I was doing a job in Buffalo grove, while there was about 8 am, so places like Chipotle were still closed. Searching for any other place that makes burritos around, I found these guys. Now I'm coming back here at least twice a week, because it was THE MOST DELICIOUS burrito I ever had! The ingridients were fresh, mixed well, the structure of burrito is 5/5 it had never fallen apart; tasted 5/5 as well; the place itself is clean and these guys working there are friendly. This is my favorite place to get burritos. The portions are huge for the great price. When I get my burrito, it is burning hot, so it's super fresh. I love that the tortilla is so soft and the meat is very tender. The steak has amazing flavor and their salsas also are very good. Have to go to this place for burritos. Always a good experience here. It's not anything fancy, small hole in the wall with mismatched seating, but that's what I love about it. The staff is fast and friendly, the food always comes out hot and delicious. I love watching them cook because I know my food didn't come from a microwave. Had their two tacos and rice with beans special today. I always get the ground beef tacos with queso, so delicious! My only complaint would be their tamales. I LOVE tamales and they're very dissapointing, very dry and not wrapped correctly. Not very tasty. Besides tamales, try it all! My company goes here (almost) every Tuesday for Taco Tuesday. They have delicious tacos for $1.45 a piece. The tacos are always delicious but sometimes the chips can be rather stale tasting. And even though I call in our order ahead of time, they always seem to forget tomatoes or cilantro on a portion of our order. read more

I've been going to El Famous for years in several locations. This one is the best, IMHO. Is it a dive? Yes. Is it greasy? Yes. Is it delicious? YES!! I swear, everytime I drive near one, my car makes me turn in their parking lot. Love their nachos. And I like watching them be made, as I do all their food. Yes, I linger at the counter waiting. :-) I get the ground beef burrito ( yeah I know) and I use the red sauce on the tables. A bit of a kick, but not too overpowering. And just so you know, I've NEVER had a hot sauce that was too hot. So a bit for me, may be a lot for you. The tables are clean, or not. The seats are clean, or not. I've not used their washrooms, so I cannot comment. There is a funny drinking fountain in the front of the house. Always cold which is good if you ride your bike there. Only cola is RC, but small concession to be made for what you get. Prices are fair (read "cheap"), and I never leave hungry for under $10. If you want sour cream on your burrito, tell them when you order. I don't need it, but if you prefer it, ask for it. My review for the Wheeling place is far different than Mt Prospect. Very delicious Mexican food. Large portions and very flavorful. Their nachos are excellent. The burritos are large, definitely tip the scales at over a pound. The service is super fast. I stopped by here last week to get a burrito. Having seen really good reviews on here, I went in with high expectations. Unfortunately, my expectations weren't met. My burrito was just "meh". Not bad, per se, but not something I would drive out of my way for. It was kind of bland and tasteless. Tacomiendo is much better, and just around the corner. Wheeling has a lot of Mexican restaurants -- to make my list of commonly attended restaurants, one would have to really stick out - El Famous doesn't do that. read more

My family and I have ordered food from here for YEARS. We never have an issue. But the one time I ordered a platter of beans for my sister in laws baby shower, they messed it up. I ordered a small platter the night before and when my dad picked it up the day of the shower, he told me it was $50. I told him there was no way because the guy on the phone the night before told me itd be 30 for a small. Well my dad told me that this was no small tray... It was huge. Frustrated and beyond stressed because I was in charge of this shower, I called the restaurant with my complaint and got a guy on the phone who didn't even know what I was saying! I argued with him for about 10 mins before I told him I was coming in to get the correct size and to get most of my money back. So I went in and got the correct size and everyone gave me dirty looks. I didn't even get an apology. I am so sorry that I ordered a small and received a large because someone didn't understand me. Not my fault. read more

I really miss this location and now it's really hard to find another location to top this location. With this location, I would order my food and wait anywhere from 3-5 minutes. Unlike some other locations where I would wait about an average of 10 minutes. But as far as staff and food goes at this location, they both rock. There are definitely higher classes of Mexican food but at the fast food level this is at the top of the chain. Their tacos, nachos, and burritos are awesome and are cheap. Its 5 bucks even or so for a burrito where at chipotle you're paying for one thats the same size for like 8-9 dollars. Their food isn't quite tex-mex food either and has a good taste to it. You do have to pay for refills which is a bit of a bummer but this place is still great read more

As with their other locations, big thumbs up to the big burritos! This location has a slightly-too-small parking lot, but it's worth the walk. Not the greatest, but good food at a good price.
