Driven this place so many times, but never tried it out. My friend, who is Mexican, wanted to try this place so we decided to go. I really like the authenticity of the food here. But don't take it from this Chinese guy, but my Mexican friend said it was really good. The table got warm chips and salsa, and we ordered the guacamole as well. I like my guac chunky, and the guacamole here was perfect. The caldo de pollo was really flavorful. The chicken stock was fantastic and the amount of chicken, and veggies were good. I also ordered the chicken carnitas, which I thought would be more carnitas-like, but I guess this is how it's made. Overall, still very good, and the lunch special was plentiful. Service was great, the ambiance was like I was in Mexico (never been there before), with authentic Mexico ranchero music blaring in the dining area. We order a myriad of dishes from the fajitas to spinach quesadillas to the enchiladas to the combination platters. You just can't go wrong with anything you order at Mi Mexico. Since the pandemic, the service has been a trifle slower, but they are down servers, so that's to be expected. However, they work hard and try to get to all tables in a timely fashion. read more

Finally made it here after passing by for so many years. The food and service were decent enough. Our waitress was difficult to understand at times as she was rushing through her explanation of the menu options. This caused more confusion than anything among us. Overall, it was just a lackluster first time visit that did nothing to warrant a repeat visit. Great local restaurant with excellent authentic Mexican food. Warm and inviting ambiance reminiscent of many of the restaurants in Jalisco complete with Mariachi music. I will start off this review by saying I have been going here for years, and I still do enjoy it here. The servers are great and the food is decent enough. There is a sense of sticker shock however. Prices have increased quite a bit over the past few years. I understand their suppliers are charging more food and other supplies and this kind of thing is happening everywhere. If they don't lower prices over time when things ease up, we have a problem. I was slightly annoyed with my steak fajita dinner. It tasted great like always, but now they're charging extra for more tortillas when they only give you 4 to begin with. Waitstaff did inform me of this right away and did not try to hide the charge, so props for being honest (bare minimum, I guess). But wow. Yes, this is a hill I am willing to die on. We went to Mi Mexico for Cinco de Mayo dinner. The restaurant was colorful and had a talented mariachi band. We ordered the Vallarta Margarita and the Grande House Margarita. Both were good. The Vallarta version came with fresh orange slices in the drink giving a nice natural citrus flavor. While we reviewed the menu we were given chips and salsa to enjoy. They were also good all though I found the salsa to be a bit spicy, but not at a level I couldn't enjoy. For dinner I had combo #22 which was a enchilada and an avocado tostada. My husband had the chicken with mole sauce. We enjoyed both! This restaurant provides coleslaw as a side to the dinners in addition to beans and rice, which was a unique touch. Overall if we are looking for a sit-down Mexican restaurant experience we would return to Mi Mexico. read more

We've been to Mi Mexico several times over the years because it's actually one of the better Northshore Mexican restaurants, but it I had a better restaurant to choose I'd probably go there. The food is average and there's a large menu of pricey items to choose from. The beverages are pricey as well and just okay - my husband says their margaritas or watered down and not great. The restaurant is a festive place. Lots of brightly decorated wood furniture. The tables are close together and you will be packed in after waiting awhile for your table, because it's usually crowded. The staff will seem annoyed to serve you - I'm always surprised out how unfriendly the staff seems to be. They do have good cheese dip and a decent beer selection. read more

The restaurant is pleasant looking with good parking. The server brought out two tiny bowls of salsa, one mild and one hot, for four people. There was a little spoon in each. There were no plates, so we were expected to all dip our chips into one tiny bowl? I asked the bus person for plates and he brought out some coffee saucers. The food was just OK. No one raved about it or complained. We had Carne Asade, fajitas, seafood, appetizers and drinks. A big concern was the cost of the food. Food was ok but service is horrendous. The waiter didn't want to give my daughter a refill of her soda because he saw that I took a drink out of her cup. He claimed since we were sharing and was reluctant to give us a refill. Also, they would charge us $4.50 for extra chips and salsa. Prices are way too high and not worth the money. Food is very good BUT....I will NEVER go back. Very very expensive for what you get. 9 of us and we called ahead, but when we got there at 4:45 only one other large table was there. They charged us for more chips ( we had 5 kids with us) and they gave us a regular size plate and price and it was supposed to be for a kid ( we didn't complain about that). Service was so slow and it was getting busy. At 6:15 the manager had the nerve to ask us to leave since she had reservations and needed the table. Totally not our fault that it is taking this long and we were still waiting for our desserts and check. Wait, it gets better! When we were about to pay the bill 2 hours after arrival my SIL and I split the bill. I was going to tip since I had 1 extra child with me. We left a tip on one card but my SIL realized they also put the tip on her card even though they marked over the tip section. When they called the restaurant about it they were told we didn't tip enough. WHAT? Isn't that illegal? Aren't Tips based on service? TIP = To Insure Promptness. Let me tell you there was nothing prompted about the over price food and the extremely rude manager. End result my SIL "should" be getting her money back. read more

Mi Mexico has been our local best Mexican restaurant for years but their prices have gone up substantially. We recognize that costs have gone up but meal prices there seemed to have risen higher than other comparable restaurants. So we were there last night for our $28.50 chicken fajitas and $18 chimi. Food was good and they gave us enough. We needed 4 containers to take home leftovers but the waitress only brought 3. When we asked for one more to take home a half basket of chips, she said she had to charge us. We told her to forget it. On the way out we talked to the Manager and told him we thought this was very bad. And we suggested they would reuse the chips which is unsanitary. They assured us that they would just toss them. When I said what a waste, they said the styrofoam containers were expensive. We just walked away. Don't know if we will ever be back. read more

My friend and I wanted Mexican for lunch. We pulled in and were seated immediately. The place was busy--it was a Friday lunch. Warm chips and salsa were served immediately and were very nice. We both ordered the lunch special Carne Asada and it was SPECTACULAR. Very flavorful and well seasoned. The beans and rice were nice and of course tortillas were served. My only down grade was on the Cadillac Margarita; it was very weak and very sweet--but of course that didn't stop me from drinking it :) I think the prices are very good for what you get and I will go back to try more. read more

The meals on the menu were not very well specified, the burritos we ordered were put in a pool of tomato sauce and were wet and soggy. The chicken in all of the meals tasted like I was eating a bag of air. The food took very long to get here the quesadillas that we ordered were so soggy it looked like they had erectile dysfunction. My sprite was out of syrup. The tomato was at least an inch thick on each and every slice. The chips had no salt and there was no salt shakers on the table. The had the heat blasting fully all the time in a small room where there is hot plates being served. My family and I have been coming here for over a decade the food is very good but unfortunately today was the last straw. My elderly mother I and my girlfriend came into the restaurant and we're seated in a very small corner and we asked politely if we could change tables we were at that point brought to a wonderful four person table One of the owners came over to us and told us that we could not sit here as they needed the chairs and table for a seven person reservation yet the room next-door was completely open forcing my elderly mother to have to shift seats and move her walker. I could understand it if they were jampacked wall-to-wall I could also understand it if there were no available tables they had an entire wing of another room available and yet told us we could not sit here and have no room for us for dinner tonight I strongly advise not eating here very poor bedside manners with regards to ownership stay away read more

My wife and I joined another couple for lunch at Mi Mexico in Buffalo Grove, IL. The weather was perfect, so we ate outside in their attractive, well-maintained garden area. The menu is typical Mexican with a large variety of choices; prices were average for this class of restaurant. The Lunch Specials were many, all priced at $13.50 and served with refried beans, Mexican rice, and cole slaw. Items in the Supreme section of the menu include tortillas as well and are priced at $2.00 more. I chose the Chimichanga with chicken filling while my wife opted for the Expresso Veggie Burrito. Our friends chose Arroz Con Pollo and the Chicken Carnitas from the Supreme specials. The food was freshly prepared, tasty, and not overly seasoned or salted; portion sizes are about average. Service by Santos was rendered in a timely fashion. Overall, we were quite pleased and hope to return again, perhaps for dinner. read more

Dined on the outdoor patio this Saturday with friends. Even though it was windy the stone walls helped keep us comfortable. The food is always great at this quality family owned Mexican restaurant. The plates are huge and come filled with bold flavors. I ate something new this time, bacon wrapped shrimp served with mushrooms and onions. Delicious. Came with flavorful rice and refried beans. I went there last night with my sisters, my aunt my cousins it the first time we had gotten together in a while we chose to go to Mi Mexico .... It was supposed to be a really wonderful fun evening. The first mistake was going. To Mi Mexico.... the service was horrible. The waiter barely understood English. We were given six wraps between two people. It was a decent size platter, but you needed at least five or six wraps per person . I don't overload my wraps . I asked the server if I can get a couple more wraps he said they charge for them. I'm like are you kidding me you can't give me one or two cause i wasn't gonna finish them in the restaurant. I wanted to take it home so I can make a wrap when I got home I m like what I did not get any more. Had he just brought over 1 or 2 more I would have been thank you very much. I appreciate it . Then my sister asked for some napkins and the waitress asked how many ? she said seven they brought us three !!!!!!!!! The food can get a bit messy so we needed another napkin each , they brought 3 napkins for 7 people I guess to share ..... I should start. When we first got to the restaurant, my cousins were sitting down and they were eating the chips which was completely fine natural thing to do when we got there. There wasn't that many left. There were very small bowls so we asked if we can have another order of the chips. we charge for them I said I've never ever been to a place where they charge for seconds on the chips and salsa. so my sweet cousin ordered an appetizer because we didn't have the chips which was so unnecessary that she had to do that but we were all hungry. So now the bill comes, and my cousin paid her portion for her family in cash, and the waiter took the bill and she had left. We were still finishing our portion of the bill and the waiter came back and complained about what she left him. That was very private it was not our business to know and , it was really an ugly scene. I did call her after dinner and told her what happened and she was really upset about it and insulted .. As far as the service goes, terrible the food it was OK the ambience it was OK The chairs were hard and uncomfortable Will I ever go back there? NO. Will I ever recommend the restaurant? I was very disappointed to find out MI Mexico now charges $4.50 for extra table chips. It was a small basket of maybe a handful. I realize inflation has hit us all hard, but $27.00 for fajitas with 3 tortillas is ridiculous. Needless to say, my family will not be going back. There are so many better Mexican restaurants in the Wheeling & Buffalo Grove area to go to. Also, we left a very appropriate tip in cash for the service we received, which was mediocre at best (15 %). The waiter actually complained and wanted more. I asked him if he could exchange the arful magarita i received and he was very upset by it. Told me that even if they made a new one it would taste the same. Walked away when i was still talking. The food was just ok. My 5 year old loves tacos but he didnt want to eat these... that made me sad. Chips were delicious though, warm and crunchy. No refills on kids juice was also a little sad. I have been here several times and have enjoyed it each time that I come. I went here during lunch for their lunch specials. I ordered their beef carnitas lunch special, which is $10.75 and comes with rice, re-fried beans, guacamole, and sour cream. You can substitute the re-fried beans for black beans which I did. It also comes with your choice of tortillas. Chips and mild salsa come out immediately once you've been seated. If you would like your salsa with a bit more kick, ask your server and they will happily give you the spicy salsa. The portions are HUGE and you can easily make two meals out of your lunch if you like leftovers. I was hungry today and always seems to be the case when I write these Yelp reviews and I ate the whole lunch platter. Overall, I enjoy this place for lunch and their prices are very good for what you get. Service was good too. I haven't had a bad experience here like other reviewers seemed to have had.
