El Famous tends to be in a burrito war with El Farol right across the street: you can only pick one to love. I have tried their burritos and while they are decent, I still love El Farol more. But they are also quite cheap, so that's a plus. read more

I like this place a lot. I have been going here for a long time. One time when I was there, someone had their car stereo stolen and it was parked right outside the place. That did not stop me from going back. The burritos here are HUGE. I usually get the steak burrito. Along with a lot of those jalapenos and carrots. Bam! Those set a burrito off! Solid choice for authentic Mexican food, I ordered two of the steak tostadas which was more than enough food for lunch, the steak was delicious, corn tortilla was excellent and all of the toppings were fresh. I have fond memories of going here as a kid with my dad for a giant beef burrito and an order of fries to split with everyone. The fries always tasted like permanent marker because the bag was greasy and it'd absorb the marker they used to mark the burritos. That aside, this is the real deal. maybe i am feeling nostalgic for home, meaning this place is probably more a 4star joint,, but i can never remember a bad experience here. i started eating steak burritos here in 1989 before i even had a drivers license. my friends brother would take us over there. i have eaten here at so many random times i cannot help but think they are open 24 x 7 x 365 and NEVER shut their doors. Horchata is a bit too sweet. The chicken torta is very good. Nice small place. People are very nice and prices are not bad. They have paletas of different flavors, I guess if you want desert. I do think they should have tamarind water. read more

Been going here almost monthly since the late 80's. Still the best burrito in Chicago. No one can duplicate the chicken burrito. I've eaten almost ever item on the menu, and everything is good. The price for these gigantic burritos can't be beaten and it's a tradition to stop in after leaving the Chicago area. I go here on dollar taco days which is Sunday and Tuesdays. Only the steak, fish, and el pastor are for a dollar on Sundays and Tuesdays. I came here about seven times, and only had one time when the tacos were not up to par. I love the steak, and the fish tacos. What else can you get for a buck nowadays? I always wash it down with a large horchata. They also have $1 burgers on Wednesdays. This review is for the one on 7200 N. Clark.The one on Madison does NOT have $1 tacos. I was on my way home to the suburbs from Chicago when suddenly had the cravings for Mexican food. 1st ave was my next exit and decided to get off, as I noticed archer rd was flooded with Mexican stores and restaurants. I did drive by El Faro, but that's all I did. Was drive by. That place looked shady and frightened me a bit. have catered from them for years and we just catered for my husbands 30th birthday and all i can say is i am so disappointed. We did the math for about 22 adults so we rounded it to 25 people. When we have catered before we would get generous portions of food. We would get everything like sour cream and cheese and tomatoes and even the plates n napkins and forks. We recieved half a tray of chicken not even full ans half a tray of steak. No sour cream. The tray of guacamole weighed more than the tray of fajitas. Horrible. We had to order 4 pizzas to feed our crowd which ended up being only about 15 adults. There was no food left and we barey made it to feed the adults. Luckily the kids had pizza which there was only like 5 yound kids under 10. I called when i recieved the food and Benny the owner claimed that he measured. I asked him did they half the portions because we have ordered before and always have lots of food left over. Plus ontop of it our food was not ready by the time we agreed. Ridiculous. 'No type of refund or anything was offered. I left another message for the owner because i was completely ripped off!! Have not had a call back.
