It's well organized and the staff is helpful! We went in the get a belt for my hubby, and found a plethora of choices! We ended up purchasing 2 and they were excellent quality and value priced for the designer brand. We walked around just to "window shop" and enjoyed the displays and the gorgeous clothing. Service is helpful. You can find lots of gift items. I got some olives from the olive section. I asked the woman which ones to get and she explained which were especially from Madrid. They were good. A one-stop shop, well laid out, lots of staff to direct you, you can get everything you need and have a great experience. We stopped in to grab a picnic, and ended up taking home three bottles of super well-priced wine...everything was on sale! We got bottles for $3-4 that would be $30-40 here in the states!! We also picked up candy, chocolates, and meats all on sale-this location in particular was the sweet spot for shopping. Stopping in other ones nearby, or in other cities, we didn't have such a great experience, as we dealt with overcrowding, dirty messy aisles, and unclear layouts. The incompetency is staggering! I have a hard time even giving a one star! The incompetency is overwhelming. I bought a high end coffee maker in Tarragona for my wife's birthday. They said they didn't have it in stock but promised they could send it within 5 days. It didn't arrive. I called. They promised again it would be there before the 14th. It didn't come. Two phone calls later... they promised an email verifying the complaint... It never came. I went to El Corte Ingles in Barcelona... Customer service said I should talk to a supervisor in the department but they couldn't do anything unless I went back to Tarragona. The supervisor finally agreed to send an email to Tarragona store to cancel the order and put the 450 Euro coffee machine back on my card. I asked for a copy of the email so I could follow up... they said, "Store policy says we can't give copies of email to customers"... Really! I would imagine with their level of competency they think it's best to frustrate the customer rather than give the customer a legal document. On and on. The level of stupidity and incompetence was astounding. BTW... I still don't have the refund, nor the call back, nor the email, nor the coffee machine... They promised!!! read more

I am not sure if I am just spoiled by American shopping malls but I was entirely underwhelmed by Corte Ingles. It reminded my of a run-down Macy's with Nordstrom prices. There were way too many floors - i think 12? And I couldn't find an elevator so taking the escalators up and down made me feel like a mouse in a maze. The prices seemed steep on brand names and I did not notice too many good sales. Maybe I just didn't know how to navigate the store as well as a local, but found myself frustrated by the layout and exhausted from all the escalators. I ended up buying a ton of Turon for gifts but I could have done so at one of their flagship stores anyways. Kudos to the super friendly girl working at the Turon section - she was awesome. read more

This store has several reincarnations: there are El Cortes that have electronics, washing machines, furniture. Then there are mostly clothing for the family on several floors, grocery store on the bottom floor. The clothes are on the pricey side.I have gone here when my luggage was lost and I had to buy everything from top to bottom. read more

IF I could give this place 0 stars I would. I purchased online (from the US) a Mexican mini-banquet as a Xmas present and had it scheduled to be delivered on the 23rd to a home in Madrid. They delivered one item (a bag of chips that cost about 1 Euro) and left the complete rest of the order out (Coronas, guacamole, lemons, more chips, salsa). Of course they charged me 12euros for the 1euro bag of chips and now I can't even get an answer from them on where the rest of the order is. It has been two weeks. This place is amazing not only for the variety of items but for the wonderful service. The salesgirls go out of their way to be helpful and one even went across the store looking for the right bag to go with the dress I bought. i was a bit surprised to see this department store in spain, esp since the name literally translates to "the english court." upon walking in, i definitely felt like i had stepped into an american department store! this one reminded me of macy's, multiple stories, 9 or 10 levels i believe, with separate levels for clothing, food, furniture, and household goods. my main reason for coming here was to purchase the traditional spanish nougat candy, "turron," since the concierge where i was staying told me that i could find it at this store. heading towards the basement/cellar, where the food was, i had no trouble locating the section with the turron. in fact, there were so many different varieties and sizes that i had a really tough time choosing! fortunately, they also had samples at the register, so i could actually taste some of the varieties before making my selections. i was also pleased that the cashiers spoke some english which was helpful...guessing many tourists come here, so speaking english is a necessity. i ended up purchasing 10 assorted flavours, all in the 80 gram size, perfect for gift giving without taking up too much space in my suitcase. each bar was €2, not bad at all for this unique treat. all of my friends and family loved this candy, as did hubby and i. if i return to madrid, i will definitely be back to "the english court" to pick up some more turron! and next time, i might just buy 20 bars (and bring a bigger suitcase)! read more

This place for the Americans reading this is similar to Macy's in Mid-Town Manhattan. The store is huge!! Groceries on the lower level and department store mainstays on the upper levels. This is a store for those who enjoy shopping, if you don't enjoy shopping for just browsing to see the type of stuff that is sold in other countries you'll want to run out of here screaming. Its a bit on the higher end as far as department stores goes as far as prices of items. I did end up buying a purse here because with the VAT refund it ended up being cheaper than what I would have paid in the US. Also the other plus about stopping in here the restrooms are free and they are clean and plentiful! read more

This is the major department store chain in Spain and this location is one of their flagship stores. We spent an hour shopping here and had a great time. I enjoy seeing the products that are not sold in the USA. This store is huge and it has everything you can image including groceries in the lowest level. Even though our shopping for general merchandise was limited in Spain we felt the prices here were fair. We will return on our next trip to Madrid. read more

I must have visited this shop(s) once a year or more for about 25 years. I don't precisely know why, as there are plently of things I don't like about it. However, here' s some good stuff to know. Great little supermarket in the preciados basement, which doesn't get too busy. mummmm, the chorizo, manchego, olive oils etc=tasty. you can even buy cadbury's chocolate here (better than nestle in my opinion). Little known fact: a bomb once went off here and brought down a tile in my kitchen wall 100m away(?!). best kitsch treat - check out the christmas hoarding/display over the entrance on calle postigo de san martin in the month of December. your kids will love it! read more

There appear to be two just a few blocks apart. We visited the smaller 6-floor version which has lots of athletic shoes and athletic wear with a restaurant-bar on the top floor. We missed the huge 12- floor version reviewed by other Yelpers. We were happy to find a shop where we could get some basics due to luggage lost at the airport. El Corte Ingles is THE main department store in Madrid. From the hype in our guide book, I was expecting something akin to Selfridges or perhaps even John Lewis. Alas, this was more like a Marks & Spencer's meets BHS kind of place - no designer brands or impressive displays. Strangely, the clothing all seemed to be styled on the late 80s/early 90s and it all just seemed a bit, well, dull. I didn't buy anything, but neither did I feel the desire to not my idea of a successful or enjoyable shopping experience. This is definitely a place for the everyday, rather than a place to treat yourself to a fabulous shopping experience. read more

Madrid doesnt seem to have HUGE shopping malls. the biggest one..(which is not really that big!!!) is el corte ingles. The English Court (Mall). It is like one shop which lots of departments. The stuff is pretty cheap and they do have a huge range of make up... But sadly the "shopping experience" isnt really like Uk or US or anywhere else actually! The thing i do like about spain is the colours and huge range of different styles of clothing. Lots of the clothes are brightly coloured and the trends vary. However no-one ever seems to wear sneakers! And i search the whole of el corte ingles for a pair only to be very unsuccessful. This place is absurd in a good way! They have about 6-7 floors of all types of shopping for any occasion or situation! They also have a cafe which serves great food, awesome drinks, coffee and churros. It's insane what a one stop shop this place is but it's also packed at all times. Have your tried to order online? I did... it took 4 weeks to realize that my "24 hours order" could not be delivered. another 2 weeks to acknowledge that they own me money, another two week so they could "give priority" to my refund which after 49 days I have still not received. In the meanwhile if you try to contact the customer service, it takes at least four days before you get an answer to an email which is usually useless. Great department store that is very popular throughout Spain. I would compare it to Macy's or Neiman Marcus in the US, yet at 6-7 stories tall its much bigger than most stores. Great selection of clothes, electronics, beauty supplies and shoes. The consultants in shoe and beauty department were all knowledgeable and helpful. Yes, sadly the best Spanish department store/supermarket is called the English Shop. Presumably modelled on Marks and Spencer, the central Madrid version, just up from Sol, is insanely huge. 9 floors? Including a basement supermarket and sub basement carpark. The supermarket is great, all the stuff you could want, including stuff you shouldn't, ever buy, like tinto mixed with lemonade (yes the spanish will insist on mixing coca cola with their red wine why why why???) I drank this, and yes, it made me drunk, watching Sex and the City with my two female American roommates at Los Amigos Sol, but frankly, if it tastes of cold Mulled Wine why bother? It is not so cheap as Dia supermarket, where I got a very effective roll on (they have to be in the spanish weather) so if you're on a budget avoid El Corte Ingles for food purchases. However, the seventh floor tourist centre is where to get your cheap postcards, ten for EUR1.50, plus lots of spanish tat, all much cheaper than the typical little tourist shops. The restaurant is on the same floor if you're feeling peckish, reasonably priced but not as cheap as the best tapas bars. Since you are in Spain, it's always nice to check out the hunting department, where you can buy big knives and rifles, for when the bulls turn nasty. I lingered round the department with a misty eye but there was one genuine customer at the time, an older Spanish businessman (I think from my experiences in Vaughantown that older spanish businessmen are the only people left on earth who know how to have a good time). I took the escalator up through what appeared to be an insanely large lingerie section, and the menswear section was likewise enormous. It is all air conditioned and a welcome respite from the Madrid sun. read more

I buy from Zara, spagnolo most of the time but this time I bought a good pair of green color boots Neosens from Corte ingles, they sent me a dark blue, I wrote them 1 million times without any answer until one day they decided to answer to my email. Every day they asked me a different question as if the person in charge is not familiar with the job. I felt very disappointed, now they just send me an email after exchanging 15 mails with them they redirect my request to the cor. department (Te comunicamos que hemos remitido tu e-mail al departamento correspondiente), since then nobody contacts me. I was in Madrid on May 9th, 2012. After a day of sightseeing, my adult son and I decided to stop in and check out El Corte Ingles. We were staying at the hotel Emperador. We are from NYC and are use to shopping in all types of establishments. The store was pretty empty. I went up to the handbag department, and I don't know why but the saleslady (a short middle age lady with reddish dyed short hair) decided she was going to follow me around as I checked out the bags. At first I just smiled and acknowledged her, but when she proceeded to follow me down aisle after aisle without offering any assistance, it became obvious to me she was "keeping an eye" on me. As I said, being from NYC I shop often and at stores much nicer than this. I could not understand what about me made her think I was someone to be watched. My son in the meantime was looking at wallets. When I told him about it, he said they had done the same to him. We are hispanic but not Spanish. I can only think, and shame on her, that her actions were based strictly on the way we looked. We left because I refuse to accept that treatment from anyone and as a matter of principle did not step foot in that store for the duration of our trip. read more
