Came here for an afternoon drink and appetizers. The server was friendly, but the food was not great. The mojitos are made with a mojito mix, and the sangria was tart- like drinking tart cherry juice. The queso tasted watered down as it was thin and the guacamole did not have much flavor. Visited with a colleague for lunch and the staff were accommodating and welcoming. They suggested great picks to order. We were seated quickly and the food arrived fast and hMy server (I forgot his name) is from El Salvador and he was both excellent and funny. The food was great! Food is always consistently good. Not the most amazing Mexican food but always hits the spot. And reasonably priced.

Eventhough it's a longer drive than we'd like. This place never disappoints. The staff is great! Never a long wait and very clean and accommodating to your needs. Luis was great and made sure we had our drink glasses full along with our bellies. Great food and not expensive either. Best Chimichanga dinner that always hits the spot! That's why we keep coming back. And the best part is there are massage chairs right outside the restaurant in the mall just in case you overdue it. read more

The service was good, our waiter was friendly and attentive, my kids liked the multi colored lights they had hanging up and the restaurant felt clean enough, but the food is so terrible. This is the worst Mexican food we have tried in Oklahoma so far. I ordered the carnitas burrito bowl. I barely ate any of it. The sauce was so unappetizing, I knew the food was going to be bad when they brought complimentary queso to the table, it seems like every restaurant that does this doesn't have good food, plus the food came out super fast on super hot plates which tells me it isn't that fresh. My husband's tamales tasted like school cafeteria food but he didn't seem to mind them. I do like the kids meal came with jello but my kids didn't care for the chicken tenders. They charge over $11 for guac, that's as much as an entree so I didn't order any. The salsa was good but pretty spicy, the chips were too thin and the warm tortillas they brought out smelled like they were starting to go sour so I didn't eat any of those. Had not been here in a few years so thought I'd give it another try. Unfortunately, it's worse than it was before. Overall the food had no taste to it at all. The rice, beans, taco, queso -- all had zero taste. The cheese enchiladas had a hint of flavor to them. The only thing that was good was the sopapia and it had more than enough sugar and cinnamon. Haven't been here in 20 years but it wasn't the same. Food was okay at best and the service was fine. Biggest complaint was I ordered a house margarita and it was filled with ice. 2 sips later the glass was empty. I ordered another one no ice and the bartender just filled my original glass out of the tin container he poured the per mixed into. After reading both good and bad reviews, I decided to find out for myself--and I'm glad I did! It was really good! My daughter and I shared the Tex Mex for Two (delivery), and the Chicken Jalapeño Poppers were bomb; the chicken enchilada with white sauce and beef tamale were delicious; the Cascabel chicken taco was the best--so flavorful! I loved their house salsa served with the thin, crispy tortilla chips (that one reviewer complained about; if thin & crispy isn't your thing, it doesn't mean it's wrong or bad! It's just not your particular style--but it is mine!). And I found the queso to be tasty, too (as another reviewer said it wasn't good). We're from LA and have had A LOT of Mexican food at countless Mexican restaurants, plus grew up with my mom making authentic Mexican food, so I'm pretty picky and wasn't expecting to like El Chico as much as I did (after reading the negative reviews). I've tried a few other Mexican restaurants in Norman and so far, I've enjoyed El Chico the most and would return here for sure. Great prices, too. Just your average Tex mex place that's dependable and fulfills your carb load cravings. The great thing about El Chico is that they have complimentary queso along with their salsa. The bad thing is their salsa is not good. Pro tip: ask for the spicy salsa it's hot but packed with lots more flavor than the tomato sauce salsa. The menu has changed a lot since the last time I've been to a El Chico which would have been 6 years ago in Tulsa. I was disappointed to see that the shrimp quesadillas were off the menu because they came with this great verde cream sauce. This time I settled for the top shelf fajita chicken quesadillas. They were completely different than expected. The quesadillas were fried and jammed pack with veggies and flavor. I was very pleased. My boyfriend had some combo which contained two small burritos (one chicken, one beef) and a chili relleno. He absolutely loved his and ate the entire thing. Seriously it was a ton of food! The prices are great here and they have daily specials during the week. There's also a 2 for $20 kind of deal where you get an appetizer, two entre items from a small selection and a dessert. There is a simple way to put this and that it's not very good. I just had to be there one time and that was it. The burrito was just made with absolutely no flavor and didn't even want to finish. I had the Monterrey Chicken. Usually this meal means they use monterrey cheese, but this cheese didn't really look like it. Either way it was good. This "Mexican" is trash. The chips are thin and so Cleary store bought. They come out room temperature and have no grease or salt on them at all. Queso, in my opinion, is absolutely Offensive to the community of Mexican food lovers. Beans were also awful, and so was the rice. I got a plastic bag taste. Yuck. Once again.... the hostess is the most rude little millennial I've met! These little worthless "everyone owes me" people are increasing in numbers! Apparently I can't sit my party of three at a high bar table anywhere in the restaurant... because the waitress can't walk 3 feet from her assigned tables... the lack of staff and attention to guests is disturbing.. on a positive note, the margaritas are good and the bartender was on point after I sat at a table for 10 minutes and finally just sat at the bar.. food is typical for microwave Mexican.. which is how they all do it now. A throw back to the age of mall shopping. This gem is located inside Sooner Fashion Mall here in Norman. I noticed the current two star standing, this is strictly for the Tecate's I will be enjoying. Growing up, malls were the place to be, and restaurants like this were where one went to get a more upscale feel versus the food court. i cant really think of anything i really liked. both the queso and the salsa (which is mild at best) tasted like they came out of a box that had been sitting in a hot semi for 6 months. my boyfriend got his enchiladas with sour cream sauce, and they were the wimpiest things i'd ever seen. he didnt like the sauce. i got the chicken chimi, which was also small. the rice tasted overcooked, but the beans were almost enjoyable. service isnt bad, but when i went half of them were wearing normal people clothes and i saw a bunch of oeople in the back i was sure didnt work there. overall, if you're ever stuck in a mall for more than six hours, el chico is a fine bet. but if you have time--literally anywhere else is better. read more
