The portions are good sized and the prices are affordable (especially comparably speaking for this area). I personally am a fan of their Arroz Con Pollo and my son loves the kids burrito and taco. Had the lunch buffet. Was somewhat disappointing. The food was plentiful but very bland, lacking the strong flavors you would expect of Mexican food. You can add heat, but you can't add flavor. Corners were being cut like the watery cheese sauce and barely filled anything that was filled such as enchiladas. Only a few menu items were marked and it was hard to tell what they were which made it difficult for those with dietary restrictions. On the positive side the service was very attentive and you could get whatever was missing from the buffet. Went to lunch with my daughter. she got the Beef Taco plate, the taco's where so soggy that the just disintegrated. I got an enchilada plate with beans. The enchilada was not much bigger than a cigar and had no flavor the bean's was watery and had way to much salt. The chips and dip they put on table, chips was very stale, and the salsa was watery. we both got water with lime, lime was old and dried out. The place has a funky smell and the fish civiche did not look like any civiche ive ever seen. The fish had been in the liquid so long that it had fallen apart and become hard. I left without eating more than a bite. Maybe they do the basics well, but I didnt stick around to find out. read more

I went to El Charro today for lunch with a few coworkers. It's a mixed bag but overall a pleasant experience. For lunch they have two options, the buffet or ordering from the menu. I took a look at the buffet and decided to go with the menu. The buffet had a lot of items but there were things there that seemed a little out of place. Like the eggrolls for example. The food from the menu was fine. I had some Mexican style tacos and they were pretty good. The tacos were very hearty and I was full afterwards without eating all of my beans and rice. My coworkers both seemed to enjoy their food well enough. They do have a salsa bar and it was decent but I didn't really find a salsa that I loved. The atmosphere was lacking and where we sat seemed rather dark and remote. But the service was where they really shined. There always seemed to be someone stopping by and checking on us. Again, an overall positive experience. I'm open to the idea of going back (and probably will at some point). But probably won't seek it out as a destination. read more

Takeout Central has allowed me to discover so many new and amazing local restaurants. El Charro is one of them! I have ordered from El Charro twice now through the Take Out Central app so this review is exclusively based on my experience with ordering through this avenue and not from eating at the restaurant, however since my experiences have been very positive, I do plan on visiting their location in the near future. I love the authenticity of the food here. I have ordered burritos, tacos, tamales, and nachos and they all have tasted very delicious. We keep ordering from this location as opposed to other local Mexican places because of the great low prices for how much food is offered. When we are on a budget and don't want to cook, we know we can count on this place. They also have a great kid's menu for picky eaters. (And by "picky eaters" I mean weak parents who allow their children make the rules) This includes hamburgers and chicken fingers (yes! At a Mexican restaurant!) My favorite thing there is the tamales. For under $6 you get 3 large sized beef tamales which are completely delicious and filling. I can't get enough. We spent $20 and received a ton of food plus free chips and a big selection of salsa. read more

They still home-cook the food or something, the food just taste great and well worth the drive. Tried this place for the first time via take out. I had the carne asada plate, and my husband had the chile relleno with beef enchiladas. We had tons of food!! Portions were very generous for the price. However, my steak was super thin, very dry and very very tough. Everything else was ok considering it's typical Americanized Mexican food. One of my favorite places in town to get fajitas, but be sure you're hungry since they are huge! Pretty standard menu like most Asheville Mexican restaurants, but they do have a few items that stand out. One is the Alambres tacos, which are beef, bacon, chorizo, jalapenos, onions, mushrooms and cheese, how could you go wrong with a combination like that? And another item is the lunch buffet. Now I normally steer clear of buffets, but this one is outstanding, small enough so that everything's fresh, but still a good variety. El Charro doesn't really have anything much different from what you can find at other Mexican restaurants around town. It's basically just standard fare Mexican food. Delicious, but not terribly inspired. What really sets them apart, though, is their lunch buffet. They have two huge bars set up with basically everything on their menu as well as another decent size salsa bar. You could, in theory, order whatever you wanted off the menu during lunch, but what's the point when you could pay less for the buffet? Go during lunch time, pig out, and be happy and satisfied for the rest of the day. The lunch buffet ends at 2:30, so get there early-ish. read more

I would honestly give this restaurant zero stars. My husband and I were, literally, the only people in the restaurant and we waited for more than an hour for our food to be brought. There were two people on the floor and neither bothered to ask if we wanted our drinks refilled. They were both on the phone sitting in the booths. A family of three later walked in and they kept having to get up and ask for their things. The food we chose was supposed to be really spicy and ended up tasting like tomato sauce. I love this Mexican restaurant, it's actually my favorite in the area, everything I've had has been delicious, and the salsa is great too. Instead of using Monterey Jack cheese that a lot of the other Mexican restaurants use in the area, they use queso cheese, and shredded queso on their dishes which is far superior in flavor to the monterey jack which taste bitter to me. Understaffed, but the waiters are very pleasant once they get a chance to serve you. And after I ordered, the food arrived in a blink. You also get a basket of chips and bean dip for free, which are wonderfully hot when they arrive. Not a lukewarm bowl of queso in sight. If we're being perfectly honest, though, don't come for the decor. It's folksy and festive, but not exactly trendsetting. I ordered the A.C.P., which was essentially pollo con crema. We had a horrible experience here today. The waitstaff seemed irritated when we walked in (we were the only people in the restaurant.) The server went to the back and sat down at a booth. There were no cups at the salsa bar and when I asked the lady, rather than refilling the cups, she brought me two cups. There were three guests at the table, each wanting a different type of salsa. After waiting several minutes, we had to go and find the server and ask that he come and take our orders. Once our food was delivered, the server never returned to our table to refill drinks, nor see if we needed anything. It was clear that he was very "bothered" to have to get up and serve us. Went here to try out something different. We were one of two groups in the whole restaurant, service was quick but not overly so. The waitress asked if we wanted the drink special and when we asked what it was she had to rip a piece of paper out of her book to show me. The special was $2 12 ounce margaritas, which we both got. They were okay for $2 margaritas, a little heavy on the sweet and sour mix. We both just ordered tacos and got some queso for the table, which was good and had a little spicy kick to it.
