Went here with a group of ladies and was surprised at how good it was! Typical Mexican restaurant atmosphere. Service was good. One of the ladies told them she had an allergy and asked for accommodation, another person came out to confirm the allergy and make sure it was well understood. This was impressive. Our server kept checking on us and was prompt when we asked for our checks. Chips were not bad and cheese dip was good. I enjoyed the salsa that comes with the chips. My friend ordered a drink which was very pretty. We also saw a HUGE drink served at another table that came in a glass that looked like a purse!?!? All the food was good. It was presented well, showing pride and care. I really enjoyed the ACP (arroz con pollo)! I wish there had been a bit more guacamole served with it though. The serving size was actually great, not huge and more than I could eat, but enough that I was full (not too full) when I was done. Everyone enjoyed their food. How could they get a 5 star review? They didn't have ginger ale, lol. If you have a large bar you typically have ginger ale. Also, there just wasn't anything that blew me away. Will I go back? Absolutely. read more

This is is the best food (not just Mexican food) in Powhatan. We have been coming for years, and the food and experience continues to exceed expectations. This is not just cookie cutter Mexican food you can get anywhere. The recipes and flavors are authentic and nuanced, everything tastes fresh and homemade, and the cooking is on point, with tender and meat and vegitables cooked just right. Last night, I ordered Tierra y Mar, and was delighted by the flavors of rosemary and grilled lemon interwoven with the other spices and flavors. My husband urged me to try some of his Chorri Pollo. The chorizo is the best I have ever had- not too salty, mellow heat, surprisingly complex with warm spices that subtly remind me of Christmas. Not only is the food amazing, the service is phenominal (and fast!). It is a family restaurant with family atmosphere. Everyone you meet is kind, couteous, and treats you like friends and family. The manager regularly comes around to check on you, and we have had many wonderful conversations with staff about food, travel, and the community we live in. It was through these conversations we learned about the family's other startup, Abuelita's, down Midlothian Turnpike in Richmond, which we have gone to several times for an authentic Mexican home-cooking experience that I haven't had anywhere else in this area. So ... I have eaten Mexican dishes all over the Western Hemisphere and I don't know that I have had anything better than El Cerro Azul in Powhatan, Va. The hostess and chip delivery was very friendly but nothing compared to the demeanor, knowledge and service of our waiter. Skinny margaritas are the way to go! Less sugar and calories, but massive flavor and KICK!! Then the food came .... OMG.... the El Fresco & Cinco De Mayo dishes... off the chart ! Wow this place is amazing. I have been to many Mexican restaurants and this one makes the top 3. Their chips and salsa are very good as is their white sauce. The menu is very diverse and has some options not normally thought of. I keep getting the fajitas del Mar which has shrimp and scallops. It is my favorite thing to get so far as the seafood is always perfectly cooked. My wife got the street tacos which she really really enjoyed, and they were stuffed with food. The service is above and beyond good and we never have any complaints. We find ourselves wanting to keep going back for dinner so we can end up trying the whole menu. I was in Powhatan looking at a potential wedding venue and decided to stop here on the way back home. When I tell y'all this place is BOMB!!! So I ordered a Blue Margarita (medium) and the lunch portion arroz con pollo. The service was very fast, and the food was even faster! The ONLY downfall I will say is that I didn't realize it was $1 tacos today but I overheard my server tell the table beside me that it was $1 tacos. Annoying but it's fine because my food was so so good. Chicken was seasoned to perfection. Beans were made perfectly. I also ordered guacamole and it came it a really good size bowl for only $3! I ordered three entrees for pickup by a friend at 2pm and one was not included in the order. I had to speak to three different people on the phone get the additional entree prepared for later in the day when my husband could pick it up and I did all this so my husband would have a meal when he got home. I called back hours later to see if the entree would be ready for HIM to pick it up on his way home and had to speak to an additional two employees. I had also ordered salsa and white sauce in my original order which was also not included. When my husband went to pick it up the manager refused to give him the salsas bc he said I did not pay for them. Regardless if I paid, I ORDERED it and the entree was not included in the pickup. The manager refused to honor the original order and refused to include the salsa unless my husband paid an additional $13 dollars. Are you kidding me?! For the inconvenience and lack of professionalism the least they could do was try to make this right. NEVER going there again and my many friends and family will be told to go to el Jinete instead! read more

If I could give zero stars I would. 3 dishes cans out in 3 mins. The tortillas were cold, beans and rice stale. The cheese in my chili replenish was watery from being microwaved. My sons shredded chicken was rubber. I apologized to our waitress and told her I could not eat the food I would give her a tip but I was not paying the bill and we all got up and walked out. I've been here twice now, once for lunch and once for dinner. Let me start by saying that my brother in law is a naturalized citizen from Mexico. I've also lived in places where there was a huge Mexican population, and the restaurants to match their needs. With that being said, is this the most authentic Mexican joint I've been to? No. So why the four stars? Because this place does basic Mexican food good, for a good price. I think I've tried their tacos, enchiladas and burritos. All good. All for under $10.00. Their queso dip for their chips is addictive. Their red salsa has a bit too much cilantro but it's still good. They have a full bar. And you can get lunch for two people under $20.00. This is the best Mexican joint I've tried in the Richmond area. read more
