April 2020. Ive been here twice now. The first time I had 2 really good chicken street tacos. LOTS of chicken. Plenty food for lunch. This week we picked up tacos and posole soup. O my GOD. The tacos were good but the SOUP! Wonderful! Then we had the HUGE flan. Nice..and open every day but Sunday during Quarantine. Could not finish so leftovers the next night. Extra points for the free chips. I had a long night and woke up feeling fine. Then, the hangover came. I scoured Yelp to find something open at 9 AM on a Saturday near me. Up came my favorite genre of food: Mexican. YAS. I hopped out of the door and drove down to get myself a breakky burrito because that's my jam. The restaurant is quite charming (as they would say on Craigslist). There's some tables outside and several inside. They're mostly two tops stocked with my favorite hot sauces: Cholula and Tapatio. Another win. They serve the standard burritos, along with some special ones with shrimp and other catchy things that veer away from what I would fancy. I had the pleasure of being the only customer at 9:25 in the morning and there was one nice woman working. I opted for the breakfast burrito, hold the sour cream, with refried beans. The beans were heavy but that's something I like so I was cool with that. I wish there was more guac and you actually couldn't even tell there were eggs in my burrito. Again, I'm not complaining because I'm all about that bean life but could be a problem to others. You've been warned. She was also super friendly and gave me a basket of freshly made tortilla chips! Ssccccoorrrreee! I dipped them through my burrito and washed it down with water because hangovers suck. I'd return for a street tacos and to try another regular burrito. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry... But Yelpers, I'm going to be right on this one and you're all going to be wrong. I will never understand how this place has such a high review. Yes- this place has a nice, small, artsy, 'So Cal Mexican' joint aesthetic going on. Yes- this place has nice tables so you can sit and eat outside. Yes- the customer service here is great. Yes- the employees serve you, and will check up on you to make sure you are enjoying your meal. Yes- you get a free sample of chicken soup. Yes- you get to choose from about 100 different tortillas for your burrito. Yes- people love these little things and it always helps make for a better meal... BUT no, the food here is SO not memorable. And no, the food is not superb. The food does not taste fresh... the sauce tastes canned and the chicken tastes dry. The food, unfortunately, is so bland and tasteless that it makes me wonder how anyone can like this place? Maybe I'm not trying what everyone else is trying? Since the first time I ever tried this place(about 7-8 years ago) up until this day, I've never been a fan of El Caballo. Every burrito I've ever had from this place has made me say the same thing..."Why did i come here again?" I hate to hand out 1 star reviews unless the restaurant is utterly terrible, so i won't do that here... but seriously, maybe it is me...? Maybe you're all right and i'm wrong? Can somebody help me? Tell me what dish at El Caballo garners such high 4-5 Star ratings? It certainly isn't the wraps... right? Not the tortas either... right? I don't understand why this place gets so many 5 star reviews. It was just meh from my experience. I had a takeout from this place today and it wasn't very good as I expected. Quesadilla was greasy as hell and guacamole had weird texture and looks like it's made with watered down avocados. Tacos and tamale were salty but tasted ok. Let me start off by stating that this is by no means the best mexican food ever. But this is why it gets 4 stars: -Really delicious wet burrito -Owner gives little soup samples -Around the corner from my house I returned a week later after my 1st experience and had 2 grilled chicken tacos. They were surely not as memorable as the wet burrito, but the interior and the kindness shown here make me want to be a regular customer. I was leaving Pagano's hardware store and despite the "Wraps" name was lured in with the "Street Tacos" listed on the sidewalk sign. And what's that on their specials board? Pupusas? Haven't had one of those for awhile I got 2 al pastor ($1.50/taco) and a pork & cheese pupusa ($3.75). The tacos came out first. Piles of marinated pork on twin discs of corn with a sprinkling of onion on top. A wedge of lime and chilled bottle of salsa provided on the side. The meat was good. Tender and lean. Could have used a bit more spice, but a squeeze from the salsa bottle took care of that. The pupusa was topped with shredded cabbage (plain, not pickled like traditional Curtido) and sat next to a pool of warm sauce on the side. The masa was tasty and the sauce was really good, but I would have liked more of the pork and cheese in it. Decent stuff. Liked the tacos better than the pupusa. If I'm in the neighborhood, it's a contender. 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding down today. read more

I came here today for an early dinner with a few of my friends. I yelped this place the other night and, since we were craving for Mexican food, we decided on El Caballo Wraps! I ordered the wet burrito with spinach wrap and shredded chicken. My total came out to $10 and some change with a bottled coke. The burrito was a little small compared to other wet burritos I have had in the past. It was good. What really made me like this place was the owner (I think he's the owner). He came out and gave my friends and I free samples of soup. The soup was delicious! I think it was corn tortilla soup or something. He also gave us chips and salsa, which I think is regularly done, but nonetheless nice of him. Although this place doesn't compare to my favorite burrito spot,Taqueria Las Comadres II, it is certainly a great spot to go to for food. :) read more

If you like Pancho Villa in SF (my go-to there), you will love El Caballo. Their food is just as good - classic California Mexican. Love this place! They have never disappointed me. Their burritos and tacos are all *chefs kiss* but I am an especially big fan of their papusas. The tortilla soup is some of the most amazing cold medicine ever! I'm half Mexican and it reminds me of the passed down family recipe soups my mother would make for me on cold winter days. I'm not sure if they are the owners or just the chefs but the people behind the counter preparing the food are some of the sweetest people ever! If you get the soup to go they keep all the chips and toppings that go into the soup separate so that you can enjoy it the way it was meant to be. Ordered quesadilla, cook spraying containers out, water and whatever was in the containers spraying all over a container of pico de gallo and towards stove. She then proceeds to cook the quesadilla, without washing her hands. Cashier handling money and food. I don't recommend the quesadilla. read more

Went to grab some food to El Caballo on 5/6/22. I asked the owner (I'm assuming the guy in the chefs hat to be the owner) to suggest an item from the menu--he suggested Pollo Asado a La Plancha. He was accommodating, even mentioned that it would take longer for the dish, which I was perfectly fine with. I asked the order to go and drove to my office. Soon after arriving, I cut the chicken in haft and found that it was raw, not undercook, raw. Showed it to a colleague that had referred the place. I drove back to the restaurant and showed to the owner. He dismissed the raw chicken as if nothing; move the plate left and ride as if to say I don't see anything wrong. Didn't apologize; didn't acknowledge the poor execution of the dish. He tried to take the dish back to recook it to which I said no. I asked for something else, in order to avoid salmonella. I overheard he telling a cook to fire a different dish because 'I didn't like the earlier one '. This was unprofessional and truly a bad customer experience . I don't recommend the food from here. Strongly advise individuals that regularly eat here to inspect the food. You don't want to get a nasty bug like Salmonella or E. coli from undercooked food. read more

Conceptually there's nothing particularly new or original about this taqueria (other than the fact that Mexican corn accompanies rice and beans as a standard burrito filler). However, as others have said, they do everything unusually well and with excellent service. My typical order is the "low-cal vegetarian burrito" (though there's nothing particular low-cal about it, or any other burrito I've ever had...), and then add sauteed bay shrimp for a couple of extra dollars. 2nd visit here was not as good as the first. Came after 2 hours spent paddling so I was hungry, tired and cold. They apparently forgot our order ... so we sat there for about 20 minutes before our burritos finally came. I also ate about an inch of burrito that didn't have any meat. Other tables look like they got chips and small tasters of the soup (I remember getting it last time I visited). Nothing this time. My husband and I did a Taco Tour of five Mexican take-out spots on Alameda island. We ordered 2 street tacos at each place: One carne asada taco & one chicken taco. This place came in 1st. The chicken in the taco was moist and had a great flavor. There was a slight crispiness of the chicken that I really enjoyed. The carne asada was tender and it had the perfect amount of cilantro, salt, and lime. The customer service here was also above and beyond. They brought us two free soup samples. I will definitely be back for that tortilla soup on a cold day! We also appreciated that they had tables and chairs, comfortable ones, outside so we could eat comfortably with our pup. The tables are on the street but it's surprisingly quiet and we watched a beautiful sunset. These two Mexican food lovers have found our Alameda spot! read more

$15.45 for a regular burrito. Not a Super Burrito but a regular burrito. Fairly small in size. That's more expensive than most restaurants that are double the size and comes with beans and rice. Yes we do have inflation but come on. That is just far too expensive. read more

Walked in just now with the intention of trying it out. The guy at the register didn't even make eye contact or greet with a friendly smile or said a single word to acknowledge my presence. Not the first impression you hope to get. Meanwhile two other female workers totally see me standing there waiting and they too didn't even offer to greet or ask how they can help. They went on their way and continued with whatever they were working on. Several minutes later, the guy at the register finally acknowledged me. I asked for meat only how much is a small container. Is that price regardless the type of meat? His replied was sure. However when I asked to get a medium container with carnitas and carne asade both he changed his mind and said no and that I would have to buy two separate containers. What a disappointment of service for Alameda. Will likely never return read more

My 1st time at this place, the people were super nice and that's why I give them 3 stars and because it's affordable. The food was ok, I feel like it lacked flavor I wish I had some hot sauce and salt in my purse. That would have helped a lot. Everyone's taste buds are different, but I feel since it's Mexican Food it should be packed with flavor. I had an amazing surprise today when I picked up lunch at El Caballo... the greatest vegetable split pea soup I've ever had. And that includes my mother's, which has been my gold standard for decades. So thick, so nicely blended, so delicious. My wife had the chicken soup, which she said was the right stuff as we are both getting over the flu. And, of course, we had our wraps... the best. It's so nice to have a place to walk to and get great food at a good price. Now if only we could get an iced cold pitcher of margaritas to go with the incredible food. read more
